
The AlphaSmart 3000 is a lightweight durable, portable word processor, and is often used as a note taking device for persons with mobility impairments or other disabilities that affect handwriting. Disability Services for Students has several AlphaSmart 3000's available for loan to registered students with disabilities.
AlphaSmart 3000 Tips
- Turn the AlphaSmart 3000 on or off using the On/Off key in the upper left corner of the keyboard.
- You can type into eight files simultaneously. To switch between files, press any of the keys marked "file 1" through "file 8" (top row of the keyboard).
- Maximum file size is 12.5 pages (about 25KB). If you run out of space in a file, you can continue writing in another file, and merge the documents later on your personal computer.
- All files are automatically saved.
- When you turn on the AlphaSmart 3000, it automatically opens the last file you had open.
- "Find" key can search for text in all eight files.
- To clear the contents of a file, press the "Clear File" key.
- Accessibility Options can be turned on/off by pressing option-command-K (then following the on-screen instructions). Your settings are preserved even after you shut off the unit.
Accessibility Options
- AutoRepeat - prevents multiple characters from appearing when user holds down on a key
- Sticky Keys - allows sequential execution of key combinations that would otherwise require simultaneously pressing multiple keys (e.g., Option-command-K)
Sending Data to a PC or Mac
- Turn on your PC or Mac
- Connect the appropriate cable from your AlphaSmart 3000 to your PC or Mac.
- Open any word processing application on your PC or Mac.
- Press the "Send" key on the AlphaSmart 3000.
- Save the file on your PC or Mac, and disconnect the cable.
