NC Legislative College Opportunity Program (L-COP)

In 1992, the NC General Assembly appropriated funding to establish the Legislative College Opportunity Program (L-COP) at each of the University of North Carolina's sixteen constituent institutions. L-COP is designed to improve academic performance and increase college-going and college graduation rates for participants of Universities' pre-college programs, such as the NCSU Saturday Program for Academic and Cultural Education (SPACE). Students, particularly those under-represented in critical professions and those from diverse ethnic and cultural experiences, are identified for and enrolled in pre-college programs in middle school and continue through high school graduation. L-COP awards provide first-year grants of tuition, fees, and books for students who complete pre-college programs, who meet established criteria, and who enroll in a UNC system institution. The legislative charge includes not only grants, but also assistance to ensure smooth transition into an NC institution and adequate advancement toward graduation. To date, NCSU has awarded three L-COP grants, offered twelve, and facilitated three. In preparation for ending this program, no new participants are being identified.

L-COP awardees have included students who participated in one or more of the following NC State pre-college programs:

  • The Colonel ‘Guy’ Bluford Saturday Program for Academic and Cultural Education (SPACE)
  • Imhotep, a program of the Science House & the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences
  • Mathematics and Science Education Network (MSEN)
