Study Skills Q & A
Q: What is taught in the Study
Skills course?
A: The Study Skills course focuses on three areas: organization,
learning strategies, and test-taking skills. Topics covered within the Organizational
component include organization of notebooks and school materials (notes,
hand-outs, tests, parent-teacher correspondence, etc.), and time management
(breaking long-term assignments into smaller parts, scheduling time properly
to study for tests, etc.). Topics covered within the Learning Strategies
component include how to use memory to best advantage, mnemonics, reading
comprehension techniques, and classroom etiquette. Topics covered within
the Test-Taking component include how to prepare for tests, how to takes
tests, and a relaxation technique. The strategies taught are considered
"best practice" in the field. Many, if not most, have extensive
research suggesting efficacy.
Q: For whom is the Study Skills course intended?
A: The Study Skills course was originally developed with
rising 6th graders in mind. Since that time, the course has expanded to
serve rising 7th and 8th graders as well. Students are grouped by age. The
content is appropriate for all levels.
Q: When is the Study Skills course offered?
A: The Study Skills course is typically offered the first
or second week in August. Morning sessions are offered for rising 6th graders
(typically scheduled from 9:00 to 11:00), and afternoon classes are offered
for rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Students in the two afternoon classes
are grouped by grade (6th and 7th; 7th and 8th). Afternoon classes are typically
offered from 1:00 to 3:00. Depending on demand, the course is sometimes
also offered in the mornings one week before the regularly-scheduled course
or at a time to accommodate students attending schools with non-traditional
calendars.
Summer 2008 Dates: August 11 - 15
Q: How large are the classes, and who teaches
the classes?
A: Classes are typically 14 students, grouped by age. Teachers
include faculty members from the School Psychology training program at NCSU
and four School Psychology doctoral students. Typically, two to three teachers
are responsible for each class of 14.
Q: What materials are required?
A: No materials are required. Notebooks, dividers, pencil
pouches, etc. are provided.
Q: Where is the Study Skills course held?
A: The Study Skills course is held in Poe Hall on the NCSU
campus. Directions are provided upon enrollment.
Q: How are the classes taught?
A: The classes are taught using hands-on and experiential
techniques. Every effort is made to actively involve each student.
Q: How do I know my child will use the information
from the course?
A: You don't. However, we use three strategies to enhance the likelihood.
First, all techniques taught in the class are reinforced throughout the
week during class. For example, a method of notating homework assignments
is taught, and this method is used throughout the week to write down Study
Skills homework assignments. Secondly, brief assignments are made each day
to reinforce the day's learning. For example, on the first day, students
are asked to prepare their study area at home. Often times, students will
be asked to teach parents strategies learned that day in class. Finally,
a parent meeting is scheduled on Monday night, the first day of the course.
During this time, parents are briefly exposed to each of the strategies
being taught to the students. Armed with this knowledge, we hope that parents
will reinforce use of the strategies during the year.
Q: What is the cost of the course?
A: Currently, tuition for the course is $185, which includes
supplies and the parent meeting.
Q: How do I register for the course?
A: You can register in two ways:
1) Download the registration form (preferred)
