Property theft is one of the most numerous crimes committed on NC State University campus. Fortunately, it is primarily a crime of opportunity, and we can reduce an offender’s opportunity to steal our property by using a little common sense. We can also employ these common sense tips to helping recover stolen property. Remember these simple safety tips for keeping your property safe:
- Lock your office, lab or residence door when unoccupied.
- Secure your belongings with a lock or in a locked container, such as in a desk drawer or cabinet.
- Do not leave valuables unattended or in plain view, particularly valuable items that are easily carried away, such as laptops, book bags, textbooks, purses, iPods, cellphones, etc.
- Engrave valuables with identifying marks or numbers, such as your driver’s license number and state.
- Record serial number information for valuables such as electronic equipment, to aid in identification and tracking.
- Take pictures of valuable property for insurances purposes, in case such items are stolen or damaged and must be reported to your insurance company.
- Write your name or initials on a secret page or pages in your textbook that only you know.
- Call police as soon as possible to report stolen property. Waiting to report can seriously reduce the chances of a successful investigation.
- Don’t attach keys to any identifying materials or labels. Report lost or stolen University keys immediately.
