Interested in playing? We’re always glad to talk with new musicians.
Auditions
New players generally begin in August or January, though it is possible in some cases to start at other times. All players need to audition for Dr. Foy, conductor. Auditions consist of:
-
Solo or orchestral excerpts of your choice – generally 2-4 minutes of music.
-
Scales – several of your choice, three octaves if possible.
-
Sight-reading may be requested.
Auditions for string players are first to determine if players can handle the orchestra repertoire well and as a factor in seating. Wind and brass positions are competitive.
Auditions are by appointment. Contact Dr. Foy at rfoy@ncsu.edu or 515-8279. Email is preferred, and make sure to state what instrument you play.
Auditions in August are during the first week of classes (watch for an announcement). Other times during the year are by individual appointment.
Course Credit
For undergraduate students, the orchestras are both 1-hour credit courses and registration is required. Students must audition first, and registration is handled by Dr. Foy. Course credit is also available for students from other area schools.
