Dr. Mark L. Sosower, professor of foreign languages and literatures, has earned the University Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award. Sosower is one of the world’s experts in Greek codicology—specifically, paper forensics. Sosower has carried out much of the foundational work in this field and has altered the way it is done. He developed a methodology for analyzing watermarks by integrating hand tracing with computerized imaging, significantly advancing dating paper of Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. The Vatican recently published the centerpiece of his cumulative research on its collection, Index seu Inventarium Bibliothecae Vaticanae Divi Leonis Pontificis Optimi anno 1518. He currently is using the technique to prepare a new album of watermarks of Greek manuscripts at the Bayerische Staatsbliothek in Munich.
