> Spurred by the tripling of overweight children in the past 20 years, Professor Robin Moore and Dr. Nilda Cosco in the College of Design have been studying the impact of physical environments on child health and development.

> Dr. Jere Confrey, the Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Education, has received a $1.65 million grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a diagnostic system for teachers to use in assessing their third to eighth grade students’ understanding of rational number reasoning.

> Distinguished University Professor of Electrical Engineering Jayant Baliga can claim one of the world’s smallest carbon footprints—over a negative trillion pounds per year.

College of Natural Resources

> Through a U.S. Forest Service grant, researchers at NC State are testing a machine that harvests small-diameter woody biomass for use as feedstock for electrical power generation.

College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences

> Paleontologist Dr. Julia Clarke, along with her postdoctoral researcher Daniel Ksepka and Peruvian collaborators, has discovered two extinct penguin species that once reached the Earth’s equatorial regions.

> College of Textiles professor Dr. Tushar Ghosh and College of Engineering professors Richard Spontak and John Muth have devised new materials that aim to put some serious muscle behind robots and biomedical devices.

> With a $1 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to find cancer-associated genes in man’s best friend, Dr. Matthew Breen, a College of Veterinary Medicine professor of genomics, hopes findings will lead to a cause and cure for non-Hodgkins lymphoma in both dogs and humans.
