Upgrades to Crustal Deformation Monitoring Systems

Purpose:  To support the replacement of outdated GPS and strainmeter equipment and facilities used to monitor and report on crustal deformation due to earthquake activity in the United States. These upgrades will further the integration of geodetic and seismic networks and the development of real-time and near-real-time geodetic earthquake products. Systems to be upgraded will include existing urban and regional geodetic networks.

Budget:  Estimated total funding is $3 million.  Number of awards and sizes of each award are at the discretion of the USGS.

Create a Cooperative Marketing Network in WNC (Western North Carolina) Purpose:  To create a cooperative marketing network in Western North Carolina that will put unemployed people back to work and stimulate the local economy; enable some forest operators and landowners to find employment through the creation of cooperative marketing networks that will help connect producers with consumers; to build organizational networks that will position forest operators to be more prosperous as their markets recover. The project will employ persons working with timber and non-timber forest products as well as marketing specialists, community organizers and forest products advisors.

Budget:  $1.974 million in ARRA funding to the Southern Research Station.
