North Carolina State University is dedicated to returning innovations and discoveries to the public with the commercial transfer of research and technologies for the economic benefit of North Carolina and the nation. At NC State, the Office of Technology Transfer  promotes collaboration with for-profit industry partners to move university discoveries from the lab to the marketplace. The OTT prepares, negotiates, monitors, and enforces licenses, options, and other intellectual property agreements in support of university innovations.

In the lab today, in our lives tomorrow

NC State has more than 550 active patents and spun off more than 60 companies that employ nearly 13,000 people. Some of these success stories include:

  • SAS, the world’s largest privately held software company
  • Sicel Technologies, which is developing a device to monitor radiation treatment in cancer patients to avoid unnecessary side effects
  • LipoScience, which has developed a diagnostic test to evaluate cholesterol, lipid and triglyceride levels in patients
  • Biolex Therapeutics, which develops and commercializes therapeutic proteins to fight Hepatitis C and other maladies
