Authenticated SMTP
You may use NC State's outgoing mail servers from off-campus, as long as you have a valid Unity ID and password. Your email client must support authenticated SMTP via TLS.
Instructions for using Authenticated SMTP for popular mail clients can be found at the Computing Essentials website.
Third-party SMTP servers
If you are sending email from off campus using a client such as Outlook or Thunderbird, you can also configure your client to use your ISPs outgoing mail server.
The following is a list of smtp servers for some of the local ISPs. If you are not using one of those listed below, you should contact your ISP to determine what address you should use to send email. Some ISPs require you to use authenticated SMTP if you want to use their server to send mail with the from or return address of another ISP. For example, if you live off campus and want to send mail with your NC State email as the from address but use Road Runner's SMTP server, you will need to use authenticated SMTP.
If you have problems using one of the servers listed below, you should contact your ISP directly. ResNet, ITD, and NC State do not guarantee the accuracy of this information.
