Built-in Ethernet
ResNet supports all built-in Ethernet adapters. "Built-in"
means that the adapter is actually attached to the system board.
It does not include PCI adapters that are installed by the manufacturer
or vendor. Usually, built-in adapters will be in the same area on
the back of your computer as the keyboard, mouse, and USB ports.
PCI cards go in "slots" that are in a different area and
often run perpendicular to the keyboard, mouse and USB ports. Some
laptop computers have built in Ethernet as well. A built-in Ethernet
port on a laptop can be in the back or on the side.
PCI bus Ethernet adapters
PCI cards are the current standard for desktop computers.

PC Card Ethernet adapters
PC card slots are mostly used in portable computers and are an
easy way to attach devices.
USB Ethernet adapters
USB adapters have been very unstable on ResNet and we do not recommend
or support them.
Recommended Ethernet adapters
ResNet reserves the right not to work on systems with Ethernet
adapters not on our recommended list. We discourage using RealTek,
D-Link, LinkSys, and Allied Telesyn cards. Certain models of these
brands have consistently not worked on our network. If your computer
has Ethernet built in, you should attempt to get connected to ResNet
before purchasing an additional Ethernet adapter. The following
are the currently recommended brands:
Regardless of what adapter you purchase, it should come with a
CD or disk containing appropriate drivers and a setup application.
Be sure to keep this disk handy for setting up your computer
for use on ResNet. You may also need your operating system CD or
CAB files to be able to load the necessary networking software. Most computers running Windows XP will not need the driver or OS discs.
Ethernet Cable
You will also need to purchase a 10BaseT cable to connect the
adapter to the wall jack. The NCSU Bookstores carry 10BaseT cables
in several lengths. The brand of cable they carry is known to work
on ResNet - we have occasionally had problems with other brands,
but any brand should work. Use only cables rated for Category 5
network use -- do not attempt to use a telephone cord or
other non-10BaseT cable with your Ethernet adapter.
