File-sharing programs are responsible for much of the
bandwidth usage on campus and a significant reason overall Internet
performance has decreased this year. Below are ways to reduce the
amount of bandwidth used by Direct Connect. Reducing the amount
of traffic file sharing programs generate not only speeds up your
ability to transfer files, but increases the speeds for those around
you.
These instructions are for an old version of Direct Connect. Newer versions may look different and have different menus and options.
We are providing these instructions to encourage ResNet
customers to be considerate of other members of the NC State and
off-campus network community. Please note that NC State ResNet does
not officially support the use of Direct Connect or other file
sharing applications.

Direct Connect, does not include many ways to limit the amount
of bandwidth it uses other than limiting the number of
simultaneous uploads. It is recommended that you set this
value to 2 or 3.
Click on Settings from among the icons.
|
|
Choose the File Transfers tab.
Change the Maximum simultaneous uploads
value to no more than two or three.
Setting the number higher can utilize very large
amounts of bandwidth and can slow your and your neighbor's
ability to perform other networking tasks.
You should only share files that you hold the copyright to or that you have explicit permission from the copyright holder to share. The safest thing to do is not share files.

When you are not actively using Direct Connect, make
sure to Exit the application. Either click on the X
in the upper right corner, or right click on the Direct Connect
icon in the System Tray and select Exit.
