Configuring XoLoX

File-sharing programs are responsible for much of the bandwidth usage on campus and a significant reason overall Internet performance has decreased this year. Below are ways to reduce the amount of bandwidth used by XoloX, a popular file sharing application that uses the Gnutella protocol. Reducing the amount of traffic file sharing programs generate not only speeds up your ability to transfer files, but increases the speeds for those around you.

These instructions assume that you are using XoloX version 1.21 for Windows. Other versions of XoloX may look different and have different menus and options.

We are providing these instructions to encourage ResNet customers to be considerate of other members of the NC State and off-campus network community. Please note that NC State ResNet does not officially support the use of XoloX or other file sharing applications.

STOP: Downloading or distributing material without permission of the copyright holder is a violation of federal and state law, even if it is not for profit. The penalties can be significant, including imprisonment and fines.

Making the following changes in the XoloX settings and completely shutting it down when you are not actively using it will help prevent wasting bandwidth.

1   Go to the Tools menu and click Preferences.

Select Preference from the Tools menu.

2   Under the Network preferences tab, set the Upload Speed  to the default value of 3, or lower. Using a higher value will slow down your computer and use additional network bandwidth.

Uncheck the Box next to "Use the maximum download and upload setting..." This will prevent XoloX from using a lot of bandwidth when you are not using your computer.

3   Under the Sharing tab, you can determine which directories and types of files XoloX shares. You should only share files that you hold the copyright to or that you have explicit permission from the copyright holder to share. The safest thing to do is not share files.

To stop sharing files, remove all folders in the list by selecting them and clicking the remove button.

4   Exiting Xolox

When you close XoloX, it does not actually close the program, but hides it in the System Tray.

When you are not actively using the program or any time you're away from your computer, make sure you close Xolox by right clicking the small X icon on the bottom right hand side of the screen and then select "Exit".

Right click and select Exit from the Xolox System Tray menu.
