Some important things about registration:
- If you need to register a device that is not capable of browsing the web, such as a game console, you can use the manual registration form from a standard computer. Routers do not need to be registered manually.
- Each Unity ID may have a maximum of five devices registered to it at any given time. You can unregister devices via the online session manager. If you have a legitimate need for more devices, please send your request and explanation to resnet@ncsu.edu.
- You should only need to register your device one time per semester. If you are being asked to authenticate more frequently, please let us know by sending email to resnet@ncsu.edu.
- You are responsible for the network activity of each device you register. If you have a wireless access point that you allow others to use, all their activity will be linked to you. If you register a computer for your friend, its activity will be linked to you. Keep this in mind when you register devices.
In Fall 2005, ResNet and ComTech implemented a registration system via Cisco Clean Access (CCA).
CCA will require every computer (or other device) that connects to ResNet to be registered to its owner. Once the device is connected to the network, you will need to open a web browser. You will be automatically redirected to the authentication page, where you must log in with your Unity ID and password. This will automatically register your device.. Please note that you must authenticate using a web browser; no other network-dependent applications, such as email clients or AIM, will be able to access the network
until you have successfully authenticated.
Residents of Greek Court must still sign up for ResNet service. Once you have authenticated, you will be redirected to the signup page. It may take a few minutes for your signup to process. Once it has, you may be asked to reauthenticate, after which you will be able to access the network normally.
CCA was implemented primarily to help secure the network. Previously, we could track down devices through a cumbersome process, and even then we could only track them to a room if our records were accurate. Now we can quickly link a device with a person. This means that we can immediately contact the owner of a computer that has become infected with a virus. In fact, we can partially restrict the network access of infected computers. This keeps other users of the network safe, while still allowing the infected computer to access the necessary resources to clean it up.
