Problems with Internet-Related Programs? Setup Questions?

Below you will find links to applications and other things you need to know to ensure you get the full use of your ResNet connection. And remember, if you ever need assistance with your ResNet connection, simply call Computing Services at 515-HELP or email resnet@ncsu.edu.

SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) and SCP (Secure Copy)

  • For SCP/SFTP transfers the officially supported application (in the Unity applications) is WinSCP. To learn how to use WinSCP, Click Here.
  • The server you should connect to is login.ncsu.edu.
  • A very nice client for both FTP and SFTP/SCP is FileZilla.
  • EOS has more information on this subject here.

Remote Desktop

  • For Windows XP Professional users, Remote Desktop provides an excellent way to log in to your computer remotely. To find out some information about Remote Desktop, click here.

SSH (Secure Shell) and Telnet

  • Because Telnet is so insecure we have stopped using it completely and will never use it again.
  • If you need a command prompt remotely we recommend that you use PuTTY or F-Secure to access a campus machine via SSH. EOS has excellent guides for this here.
  • Click here to obtain X-Win32 in order to run *NIX applications that require a graphical user interface remotely.

Miscellaneous

  • For answers to questions such as 'How do I log in?' 'How do I send and receive email? and other basic computing issues at NC State, try  the Unity/Eos Help page.
  • Passwords: You are required to change your password as least once a year in order to be able to use the MyPack portal, which you will need for class registration and other important functions. You may change your password here.
Still have Problems or Questions?
  • Use the ResNet Help page to discover the many ways to get help with your connection.
  • ResNet Staff are available for all on-campus housing areas. The ResNet staff is happy to answer questions either by telephone or email. If further assistance is needed, they will set up an appointment to meet you in your room.
