Written Comments to other Survey Questions
Below are many of the comments written in response to
the invitation at the end of the survey to, "Feel free to add comments
about ResNet or any of the above questions."
These are not edited.
- Great service, but I would like to see a uniform operating system
appear in the computer labs; I find it irritating that I can't open
some files made with WordPerfect on UNIX machines when I am logged in
to a Windows NT station, and vice versa. Personally I don't like UNIX
at all, it's too foreign and intimidating. GUI systems are much more
intuitive and user-friendly.
- Great service. Just wish that it was a little faster and that we have
no more server outages.
- I do not see why ResNet is such a wonderful feature. All I feel that
it has to offer is a connection to the internet. Perhaps students should
be made more aware of the purpose of ResNet.
- I find that having ResNet in my dorm room has been invaluable...I
would not consider living in a residence hall that is not connected
to ResNet.
- ResNet is great, and allows students to work from the convience on
various web assignments. It's also very fast which makes life easier
when you have to download a 4meg program.
- I study in other places in my room due to having such things as ResNet
in my room.
- ResNet is awesome, but it must be used with care, unfortunately i
over used it too much this semester and it has affected my grades, yet,
thru its use I feel that i learned more about computers and such than
I would otherwise by going to class, I ama computer engineering major
and ResNet gave me a very fast connection and link to the information
I needed.
- Seem to have had lots of problems with our hub here in turlington
or along our route. Net seemed faster last year before the changes made
over the summer. Too, it is really a pain not to be able to see all
the computers over the network neighborhood. Hard to transfer files
if you dont have ftp server or icq. Another thing is that supposedly
every dorm has a ResNet representative, how in the world are we supposed
to know who it is. this is a lot to ask but what about upgrading the
wiring in the dorms to 100baseT.thx a bunch
- Great service, fast speed...no complaints from this former modem user!!
- ResNet is great! The part I like best is the extremely fast Internet
connection.
- It's great, however when it goes down I temporarily lose the use of
many of my programs
- ResNet is great... I have really enjoyed it.
- I think that all rooms should come with ResNet. Like Virginia Tech
does. That way we don't have to worry about when they are going to come
hook it up, it is there to plug into. Also that would encourage more
people to get computers and that would be in the Ed and Tech fee I guess.
That would be one less bill to pay (80). I never use the labs but yet
I pay thisfee to use them and I still have to pay 80 dollars more to
hook it up in my room. I wish I could run a cord from the lab to my
room. I just feel like I am paying all this money in the ED and TECH
feeBut don't get the use and what I do use I have to pay more for.
- More information concerning the use of a computer hook up to ResNet
as a server (i.e. mapping a domain name to your computer).
- I love ResNet. It's one of the main reasons that I'm staying on campus
next year!!
- I have been fairly pleased with ResNet overall, but I have noticed
a deterioration in the quality of the connection in recent months. Packet
loss has increased, as well as periods of connection loss for 5 minutes
or so. I don't know if this is due to the network upgrades during the
previous summer, or damage to the wiring during recent maintenance (I
live on the second floor of Sullivan Hall).A remedy to this problem
would certainly please myself and others who have experienced the same
difficulties.
- I think that it would be very helpful for students (especially those
in computer science classes) to be able to access their eos accounts
through ResNet in their rooms. I live a long way from the engineering
computer labs, yet I have had to spend a great deal of time in there
writing programs for CSC114, and it would have been much less time-consuming
if I could have done it in my room.
- I've really enjoyed having this network in the dorms! It has made
studying and using the web much easier! The service is fast and reliable.
Keep up the great work!
- I think ResNet is a very good thing. I use it an enormous amount and
look forward to using it next year. My only complaint is to cost of
using ResNet per semester, it is a little pricey for college students
to afford. Other than that i am very pleased with all ResNet services.
- ResNet needs some kind of T1 or other high speed connection for off
campus students. i am moving next sem, and the cahnge to bellsouth.net
will be a painfully slow one. off-campus next semester. How much would
it cost to run an ethernet cable from SMDF to my apartment in Cary?
- It would be nice to be able to access the other side of the network
via network neighborhood. Also from what I understand a lot of the people
on my floor had a hard time getting the eithernet cards that the book
store was selling to work.
- I would definitely recommend letting students use Sun Stations or
Windows NT in their rooms exactly like the ones used in the Unity/Eos
labs.
- There seemed to be more traffic on the network this year than in previous
years, which in some cases made the ResNet unusable. The high amount
of traffic sometimes caused timeouts contacting the campus DNS servers,
thus making web browsing...etc not possible. Also, I noticed on several
occasions that I had quite a bit of difficulty especially contacting
the pop servers to check email using the ResNet, where off-campus and
outside of the ncsu.edu domain this was never as much of a problem.
I've been connecting through the B building of Avent Ferry Complex if
this helps to diagnose a possible problem...Thanks!
- Great service!
- I'm sure going to miss high-speed access over the summer...
- At no time did I receive information this year about how to configure
my system for ResNet... I relied on information from suitemates and
information from the first year I lived in the dorms.
- I think it's a great system. It really helps not to have the phone
line blocked and use the internet at the same time.
- RESNET IS REALLY USEFULL, SOMETIMES THE NETWORK IS DOWN, TRY TO MAKE
SURE IT DOES NOT HAPPEN ResNet has been a very useful in my daily routine.
- i regret moving off campus because it means losing my great connection.
there were many problems with the network neighborhood
- having ResNet in my room is convenient for being able to access email
all the time, but when i have to write papers, or do homework, I have
to go to a lab to be able to think so I don't see a point in my continuing
to pay for ResNet just to be able to check my email. also, my roommate
for next year will have a computer so if anything is really urgent,
I can always use her computer. if it was possible to access a screen
that looks like the UNITY screen from my room, I would probably continue
to get RESNET, but I don't like having to remember where each file is
if I type parts of a paper in different places (my computer, lab account..
etc.)
- need faster lines, better information access, and better antivirus
software .e.g. Norton Antivirus (best) or McAfee (Average)
- Give access to the whole campus back in Netwok Neighborhood
- i love having the ResNet service. i wish there was more services available.
- ResNet is the BOMB!!! :)
- I am moving to the E S King Village after this semester and am very
sad about the fact that ResNet is not available to me there!!!
- I recommend that you offer ResNet to ncsu students that stay really
close to the campus. I don't know if that is already possible or if
it is impossible but you are lossing business when students have really
made up their mind to not stay on campus.
- Sometimes, ResNet becomes very slow, for some reason.. however, I
have not experienced that problem for a while now. I love the speed
of ResNet, and will continue to use it while i am in the dorms.
- like i said earlier it would make things extremely easier for almost
every design student living on campus to be able to see print jobs from
the room to the design printers in brooks computer labs - this would
help tremendously!!!!!!
- i believe that ResNet is a great service. I moved out of metcalf last
year into turlingtonso that i could have ResNet. I love the speed, the
reliability, and the price of such a great service.ResNet is my only
regret about moving off campus. I hope that the cable modem is avaliable
soon!
- RESNET IS AWESOME!!!
- When my roommate and I found that our connection was inexplicably
down, we immediately called ResNet Help (515-Help). After being kept
on hold and being told that our call would be returned, nothing happened.
We called EVERY DAY for the time span of a week and a half and were
not helped until the very end. At this time, we had been without our
internet connections (due to a mistake in disconnecting by your technicians)
for a week and a half. This was not the first time our connections failed
to work. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. I WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED AND ANGRY, AND
ALL IT TOOK WAS 5 MINUTES TO GET OUR CONNECTIONS WORKING AGAIN- BUT
WE HAD TO WAIT SO LONG BEFORE ANYONE PAID ANY ATTENTION. if you have
a response please email me at xxxxxxx@unity.ncsu.edu .
- A friend receintly asked me to move into an apartment. My number one
reson for declining the offer was the ResNet access on campus.
- It is awesome to have high speed internet capabability at my desk.
I can surf, research, email, connect with others and have fun without
having to wait in line for a computer at a lab.
- Everyone should be required to have ResNet if they have a computer
and use the internet. Even though I paid for half of the phone service
to my room, I was never able to use the phone because my stupid roommate
was always using the phone line for chatting through her computer. So
other people don't have to put up with this either, I think everyone
who uses the internet should be required to use ResNet. It's really
fast and the same price range or better than other ISP's.
- Thanks for making things so easy!
- ResNet is a GREAT service that is offered
- last year the routers allowed easier access to friends computers across
campus and file transfers were much easier, but this year some changes
were made and now many parts of campus are harder to get to without
an ftp. I havent had any trouble really it was just easier to get to
everybody before the changes.
- I am Happy with ResNet
- From what I witnessed with my roommate, ResNet installation time is
awful. It took a month for someone to even show up to make sure it worked.
I'm pretty sure all you do is "flip a switch" to turn access to someone
on. This plain sucks.
- runs slower than it should, but with a network this large, it's ok.
- If any problems arise in the ResNet network (i.e. servers down, or
other problems) it would be useful to have an email from ResNet telling
what the problem is and when it will be fixed. Unity/EOS file access
would be VERY helpful!!!
- we definitely need faster computers, not necessarily NT's or Microsoft
based machines though. Also, more computers would be nicer, living in
Sullivan, every time i walk by the lab, there's at least 3+ people waiting
for computers even at 2 in the morning.
- It was a great service and i was very pleased with it.
- I love it. I can do almost anything from my room meaning I can get
so much more done. I wish that more things in DH Hill were digitized,
but other than that, I have had few complaints about ResNet service!
Keep up the good work!
- Great Service! I will truely miss it when I move off campus. :(
- ResNet is definatly useful in getting course work done, communicating
with friends, family, and insructors, as well as just browsing for fun.
As long as I live on campus and am financially able I will subscribe
to ResNet. I have emailed HELP several times with personal computer
questions and I have always recieved promt and helpful advice.
- ResNet is wonderful :)
- I wish training coursed in TCP/IP and other network subjects were
offered and readily advertised Also, emails regaurding the status of
the network would be beneficial (when are peak usage times, what are
the most common sources of network down time, etc.)
- 100 Mbit to the workstation for a price(at least after the whole campus
is hooked up)
- I really think ResNet is great!
- Any subscriber to ResNet should be able to use all programs that one
can use at a normal computer lab. All engineering, graphics, word processing,
and computer science(compilers) programs should be able to run properly
on all ResNet connected computers. If one is on Netscape running through
ResNet they should be able to print on their own computer. Or another
example, printing maple assignments on local printer while working with
the Maple program that is on the NCSU server. thanks for your time.
- This semester i send my computer home for my sister, but i will definately
going to register ResNet next semester.
- ResNet is a wonderful service provided to students living on campus.
I love the way everything is so much faster than without it. I wish
there was a way i could get it off campus too, like when i move off
campus into an apartment.
- ResNet is extremely helpful. The fact that it is in Sullivan is the
main reason why I am living here again next year. I would like to be
able to access the programs that are in the labs from my room (ex: xTracs,
AutoCad).
- It is an excellent service that everyone should take advantage of.
- It is very helpful to have instant internet access in my room! Have
a great day!
- Doing a great job!
- ResNet would be better if they offered to have a connection to other
computers outside the dorms this would allow better file transfer and
communitcation amoung the students of NC State's campus
- It would be nice to have the network neighborhood work for the entire
campus again. I also like the idea of having public printers that students
could use through use of print quota. It would be nice for every dorm
who offers ResNet to have one of these printers
- ResNet is pretty great.
- It takes TOO LONG for people to come around and hook up connections
at the beginning of the semester!! It is like pulling teeth!! That is
the ONLY major problem I have with ResNet.
- I found ResNet to be a very satisfactory ISP. I appreciate the very
fast Ethernet connection
- ResNet is a definant perk to living on campus.
- I feel that the price of service that is charged to users and the
number of times that service has been lost randomly and without warning
(i.e. not listed on system news web page or the newsgroups) should lead
to lowering the price, or the guarantee of better, more consistant service.
- I would really like to see lab supervisor in the lab who actuallly
know about computer It is frustrating try to get help through phone
line when you can't describe the problem or get the solution. A knowledgeable
person in the lab would be extremely helpful. When someone calls to
ask for help, please use someone who can talk on a level with someone
who is not as skilled as some on computers. It is hard to understand
someone when they are spouting off things that are totally foreign to
you.
- I think that ResNet should be made available in all dorms!! It's much
help b/c you don't have to wait in lines or wait to get on to register.
It makes life much easier without using the phone line!!
- I think it should cost less. Other schools have similar connections
and it is either free, or just cheaper. As primarily an engineering
school, I would think that it would be possible to offer either faster
or cheaper connections. Other than that, I was highly satisfied with
the service.
- My first ResNet card from circut city did not work
- ResNet is great service to have, but it "breaks down" almost 4-5 times
a week. When that happens I can't check my email or open the internet.
Please, try to fix this problem.
- One of the features I like most is access to other computers also
connected to ResNet, however, I could not access several of the workgroups,
including one that I have a friend in. We intended to share stuff that
way, since it would be so simple, but since we couldn't see each other's
computers, it didn't work. I could, however, see the workgroup that
she was eventually in at the beginning of the year, before she switched
from a Macintosh to a PC. I would like to see this corrected.
- have ResNet repair people when called to respond more promptly, or
at least at all. i had a problem when installing a new computer and
called the help number and no one ever got back to me after a week,
so i managed to fix the problem on my own.
- The service needs to be cheaper.
- the speed is very convenient, although it seems that this semester
the reliability of the network has decreased slightly
- The ResNet price should be lowered. It is too much to pay per semester
and that is why many people just order an internet sevice outoutside
of school.
- i was entused about a fat ass connection when i came to state......now,
when i go home, i visibly weep at the pathetic speeds of a dialup connect.
thank god for ResNet
- In refrence to the unity/eos lab questions, PLEASE chill with the
NT'st hey're not only WAY too slow for maple and other class programs,
but they don't even WORK half the time... In tucker labs, I have to
wait in line twice as long now because few people want to deal with
the NT's once they've been on them once or twice... The Sparc4's are
faster... As far as Res-Net, It would be nice if you could check out
the packet loss that occurs between routers (and I don't mean network
neiborhood). I frequently experience this even within my own dorm (normally
when I try to telnet or ftp to another machine).
- PLEASE link the East/Central/West Campus's ResNets together!!
- ResNet ROCKS!! How else are you going to get < 100 ping on a Quake
server in Minnesota on a regular basis?? I WOULD like access to the
UNITY applications. AUTOCAD is a *biggie*. Standing in line for the
lab is a nightmare around Dead Week if you have to do AutoCAD. Samba/AFS
client for Windows 95/98would have been nice for the direct access to
my account, but that's OK.... However, I think that it would be really
nice if a graphical FTP client were available to students through the
chaos server. THANKS FOR THE T1!
- ResNet has made my life so much easier. Having internet access is
a plus in addition, it's so much faster than the unity computers in
the lab. I think all dorms should have ResNet connections.
- I am very satisfied with the ResNet service and am thankful that it
will be provided for me in all the residence halls by next year.
- The speed on the internet is great, but network neighborhood never
has all the workgroups and computers available making it difficult to
communicate with people in other dorms.
- love the speed...untill it goes down or overuse
- I feel that ResNet is a great resource here. However, I believe that
the system malfunctions and shuts down too much.
- ResNet is great! When compared to a modem connection, ResNet is quite
superior!
- I would like the hubs to be 100 MBit switching so we can get faster
speeds in the rooms. Also, could you enable NETBUI over the routers.
Last, and this is not your fault, but telecommunications lost my application
at the beginning of the school year and every time I called you about
this, you said that it should be turned on in a couple of days. I finally
had to ask you if you'd even gotten my application yet. No one checked
on this the other times I called. I guess my suggestion is before you
make a statement saying it will be turned on in a couple of days, look
to see if you've even gotten the person's information processed. I was
very impressed with the promptness of your team in turning on my ResNet
once you got my application from telecommunications, but I wish I had
known that you hadn't even gotten my application so I could have been
calling the right people to find out what's going on. Thanks.
- * Should be in all dorms... in fact, it is the reason i moved to syme
from bowen (i know it is in the process of being done, but very slow!!!!)*
You should be allowed to use a hub in your room!(i have three computers
that i regularly use)* It should be free like ECU! actually, most of
the people i know at ecu don't even know what a high speed connection
and are frightened at the thought that they have check email from professors.*
overall, it's good stuff; with reliable and very helpful staff!!!* you
should have more free software on the ResNet web site.* also, you should
mention the procedure for hosting a web site, ftp site, and using an
x-win emulator.
- To get hooked up to ResNet, I had to access the instructions online.
There is a slight problem with this since I was trying to hook up to
ResNet, meaning that I did not have internet access at the moment. Running
back and forth between my room and someone else's room that had a hooked
up computer in it was not what you might call convenient.
- My connection to the network neighborhood was incomplete. I only had
access to a the east campus dorm sites and only around 4 computers per
dorm at that. I have recently found a way to get into "Wood" with around
50 computers but that is it.
- I like ResNet.
- I can honestly say that this year has been my WORST experience with
RESNET during my four year subscription This "fully routed" (RESNET
help desk words not mine) network is horrid and we've been limited to
browsing only computers in our building on the network neighborhood
(or any IPX based application). To further compound the problem, there
is a HUGE percentage of time that TCPIP based applications will not
connect to other dorms on this campus. To have students intentionally
blocked off from one another defeats the entire purpose of having RESNET.
I've called to complain about this several times and not one thing has
been done to fix this problem An additional problem that has arisen
this year are the random DNS timeouts that have been occuring. One minute
I can be right in the middle of a download, bringing in a webpage or
chatting on ICQ and suddenly the connection will just time out and go
dead. This has happened not only with me, but with many of my friends
in Sullivan Hall. Sadly, this too happens far more than it should. Please
don't get me wrong. I LOVE RESNET, and it has been the ONLY reason that
I've stayed in the dorms for the past two years, but there are some
definite improvements that need to be made immediately. Thank you.
- Get rid of the bad routers & hubs. Loosing your connection while ssh'd
to cc05du is very frustrating.
- A lot of the things you can do with Unity accounts are geared toward
engineering/ computer science majors. It would be nice if your help
topics and/or literature on what is available was geared toward all
majors. Basically, instructions and information available in layman's
terms would be nice.
- ResNet is a must have for all on-campus residents. Great service.
- I really think it's great the services you offer us already. I love
having so many things available to me quickly. I am sure that I would
find additional services useful, but I just don't know enough about
themto ask for them! Also, I will be off campus my senior year. But
keep up the good work!
- ResNet prices were quite high......my father owns a business in computer
networking and consulting and wasn't too pleased with the cost either
- My roomate and I have greatly enjoyed having ResNet in our room because
it has helped us communuitcate as well as do research
- I love having it in my room. It is very convienent and easy to use
once you figure out what you are doing.
- A good service, just wish it was a tad cheaper
- I have thoughroughly enjoyed ResNet, and will be so sad not to have
it next year when i move off campus. If every campus facility was as
wonderful as ResNet, then i would not need to move off campus. Bravo
:-)
- things mentioned in #20 are already available to those of ususing
linux with afs mounted, but I think my friends who mainly use windows
would really like it
- ResNet is an integral part of my life as a science major and as an
executive board member for IRC. Without the ease of use and high-speed
connection, my personal performance level would decrease markedly. ResNet
is wonderful, and I would like to see the netowrk upgrade to an even
faster connection on-campus. Additionally, I feel that the university
could make money if it ever decided to incorporate ResNet into some
of the nearby apartment complexes. If the company was not opposed to
network connections in some rooms and if I were living in an apartment,
I would pay to have ResNet in my apartment.
- I think the biggest problem with ResNet is that the people who work
there know computers inside and out. they use terms the average schmuck
that just wants to do his homework doesn't understand. for instance
i had trouble answering one of the questions because it used terminology
i'm not familiar with. other than that ResNet has been great (especially
since i have an extremely slow modem)
- Only thing I can think of is to continue the use of static IP addresses.
That is extremely convenient:-)
- I think it would be really helpful to allow those using ResNet in
their rooms to be able to run similar programs and applications like
that in the labs.
- It's great, but I would like to see more direct access to my filespace....instead
of FTP. Also, upgrading the Building hubs to 100BaseTX would be nice
since most people transfer files between people they know in their building.
I'm not sure how cost effective that would be though. Also, as suggested
above, the availability of Eos applications would be nice. Instead of
having to use eXeed....is there another way??
- ResNet is great, and it will definately influence my decision to stay
on campus as long as I can. I hate going home and using our 33.6k modem,
it is soooo slow.
- ResNet has been a great assest to my success this year. It is ten
times better than a normal modem connection and you can use it at all
times of the day. There is no need to worry about tying up the phone.
Next year I am moving into Lee Hall, and I am greatly hoping that it
will be wired with ResNet before I move in. I would really like to be
able to use it again if I can.
- ResNet is really fast and puts modems to shame!
- I am taking CSC 200 this semester and it would have been very valuable
for me to be able to save work on my unity account space from my computer
in my room. It would help if this service was avaliable in the future.
- FIX interconnectivity between dorms Wood/Brawgaw/Sullivan can't do
shit with each other.ICQ performs poorly on NCSU RESNET FTP is equally
as poor
- As stated above, I WANT THE NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD BACK!!! It was extremely
useful to browse the network and see what files my friends had open
on their PCs, and what other people had put up for all to see and download.
Now I must know the IPbefore I can access my friend's files. What's
more, the network is extremely unstable now. File transfers from PC
to PC across ResNet (ie, from Alexander to Syme) fail at least 1 out
of 10times with a Network Error, FTP file transfers to sites off campus
routinely stop for no reason, even if I'm the only user logged into
that FTP site and am getting 30+ Mbps transfer rates. The Network as
a whole is much more unstable now than it ever was in the previous 2
years I've been here. Half the time, Windows can't even find the drives
I've mapped from friend's computers, while last year I never had *any*
problems. All in all, what ever you changed this year, it sucks. Change
it back. Quickly. As stated above, I won't be here next year, (I'm studying
abroad), but I will be back the year after... I hope things will be
fixed by then... otherwise, I'll probably just get an apartment off
campus. The *only* reason I'm living on campus now is because of ResNet...
and with the problems I'm getting and the price I'm paying, I could
get ADSL or a cable modem and be much happier.
- I was very disappointed when I learned that I was restricted to certain
areas of the network. I have friends on other campuses that I share
class files with and so on.
- The only major problem that I have had with ResNet is that Windows
shares are notavailable across campus like they were last year. For
example: to access a file that my friend in Syme had shared out for
me, I had to find out her IP address and connect that way. While this
is not an impossible task, it would make things much easier if everyone
could see everone else.
- make it free and available in all the dorms
- ResNet is great!!!
- There were days that the Network in my dorm, Alexander, wasn't working.
I would get a long delay and the internet or my email would work. I'm
just hoping it gets fixed next semester. I will be living in Bragaw
and hopefully it won't happen there, I just want you guys to know that
sometimes it was an inconvience. Thanks
- See above for brief but vitally important comments.
- I really like the fast connection speeds available through the network.
I would like to be able to access both the applications available in
labs and my network drive space from the room in some fashion. I wouldn't
mind purchasing software that would make that possible, as long as the
software was reasonably priced. But I woul;d like the ability to run
and edit certain files I have on the network from my room.
- #26 is a poorly worded questioni was proficient when i came to NCSUso
NCSU could not train me
- Excellent Service, althought I am most likely an atypical user to
whom some questions don't apply.
- Stan Martin did an excellent job helping me with many things this
year. He is extremely nice, understanding, and definately patient.-thank
you
- ResNet is to expensive, and it should be provided by NC State University.
How is the university going to charge for programs that add to the education
process. ResNet is a must with accessing the web, and email and students
need these things to survive in college.
- The connection time is amazing and my access has been quick unhindered
and never down and for that i am thankful. I have only had one problem
and that was when i switched roomsand it took two weeks for someone
to rehook me back up, obviously i fell through the cracks.Otherwise,
the ResNet service was outstanding.
- Overall, a good service; however I feel that our wall connection is
somehow faultyOften when either viewing web material or downloading
files, the transfer will stall, whilethe other rooms in our suite have
no trouble.
- ResNet is great....I think that in many ways it has helped me manage
my time better in the sense that information is always right there when
you need it via the internet or newsgroups. And to top it all off its
fast and very reliable. I think it is the best investment, combined
with a good computer,a NC State student, that is serious about academics, could
possibly make. While Stan Martin is a gem and wonderful to go to for
assistance, the staff in Computing is less that adequit. Perhaps I had
a bad experiance- my ResNet connection turned off when those that had
not payed were being turned off, and I was first told it would be a
day, then I was told it would be anywhere from 3-10 days before i was
reconnected- even though a switch just had to be flipped. When I finally
was connected to Mr. Martin's office, things went well. Even though
he had left earlier in the day, Mr. Martin got my message and gave me
a call at 9pm to tell me that my connection should be back up. He went
beyond my expectations and duty to ensure that my service was working
properly, as I know he has done for many others.
- the network being split up from campus to campus really hinders file
transfer and things of that nature! maybe ResNet should cost a bit less
as well!! My only complaint with ResNet is that it keeps going down.
Throughout this semester ResNet has gone down multiple times. The last
time I completely lost my IP, and was without internet access for 3
days. On other instances it would be out for a whole day, or hours at
a time. I honestly feel that for an increased 80 dollars a semester
I should not lose access to the internet. Another problem is that I
cannot see avent ferry, and other dorms on the network. There seems
to be a break connecting to far sides of campus. Basically, I have been
annoyed by down times throughout the semester, and on many occassions
felt like I should be getting money back for the time I was without
service. Other than that, the network has worked fine.
- I wish I had some way to get it in my apartment next semester...
- This is an absolutely wonderful service. It's fast and efficient for
students to get their work completed in their room. Don't quit doing
a good job!!!
- when do we go 100 megabits? i think it should be $80 per ip, and you
shouldn't care about ip masqing. you need an 'other' option on your
'where you got your ethernet card thingy .i think you need to advertise
the cbt courses more.
- you can already access unity apps with linux! (and it is very very
useful)
- Great service, but the technicians I have come in contact with haven't
always been able to help and seemed to not really know what they were
talking about.
- keep it up y'all i cannot live without ResNet anymore, seriously -
screw modems
- More bandwidth! I dont feel I can run a serious FTP because if I start
taking up too much bandwidth I have ResNet on me Im sure.
- I have been to the computer labs a few times this semester. Each time
I have found it very difficult to work because other students were making
extremely loud noise (yelling across the lab, laughing loudly, even
singing). Any faculty in the labs did nothing. Please find a way to
make these students show a little courtesy. There should be a system
to keep unecessary rudeness from hindering other students' work in the
computer labs.
- I would like to see ResNet in every dorm....for free!
- ResNet is awesome! My college experience wouldn't be the same without
it!
- Change to switches!
- ResNet going down at random times sucks
- ResNet is VERY convenient!
- I love ResNet, it is great!
- The network is so much faster than my computer at home.
- ResNet is a wonderfully useful service. Again, I cannot over-emphasize
how much I would like to see the ability added for mapping one's Unity/EoS
filespace as a local network drive.
- I have been extremely impressed with the service you guys provide.
I have been on campus for three years and except for the occasional
5 minute lapse due to routine checking and maintenance, my connection
has been up virtually all the time. And since i've got servers up and
running 24/7, this is important. Thank you.
- Excellent access, just don't raise the cost unless absolutely necessary.
Extra options wouldn't be worth too much of a price change. Please have
my ResNet hooked up in my room for me when I get here. I will hate not
having it for a week because I use it for AOL, AOL Instant Messenger,
and ICQ And being without it is almost crippling!
- I really enjoy the ResNet connection, I only wish that I could get
it off campus.
- Several times the service went down without warning or notice and
that made it hard to work on homework that needed to be done on the
computer system and internet
- I think it would be very helpful to put in the ResNet hand-book, instructions
on how to use the Network Neighborhood, i.e. connecting to other ResNet
computers and the correct way to sharefiles and folders so that users
wont be able to corrupt other peoples shared files. Also, I think it
would also be helpful to put in the ResNet handbook instructions on
how to sync unity/eos passwords so that when a user logs on in his/her
room, they will have their home directory already mounted.
- I already have access to all programs in Unity labs through X forwarding
off of login.ncsu.edu and such I knew most of my computer knowledge
before attending NCSU, but the only training of any kind I saw, E115,
I found to be of very poor quality
- Installation was a nightmare, and the staff proved incompetent with
helping me.
- I think ResNet should be cheaper, maybe only like 50 or 60 dollars
a semester, this would make it more comparible to dial-ups, I'm an Engineer
and I already have to pay a $50 computer fee, I just think that I am
paying way to much for computer time when you add in this fee too.
- The speed of connection is great. Some of the staff needs a little
more training, because they could not answer some questions that I had.
- My roommate and I share my ResNet subscription, and we could not survive
without it. My computer was down for a couple of weeks this semester,
and I didn't think that we were going to make it through. We love you
ResNet.
- Please make RESNET compatible with Netwrok Neighborhood in windows.
- I really regret not having access to ResNet because I decided to move
off campus to an apt complex off of avent ferry. Im positive that the
apt owners would love the extra business if ncsu could provide ResNet
to them...
- I'm going to be sad to have to leave ResNet behind when I move off
campus.
- Thanks
- ResNet's service is incomparable to any other from what I have seen.
At my last college (ECU) their Ethernet service was constantly going
down and fluctuating wildly in reliability. ResNet has never let me
down!
- I absolutely love ResNet. I don't know how i ever got along with out
it. Now, at home I have a cable modem connection, so that helps quell
the withdrawal symptoms, but i don't know what i would do if i ever
moved off campus or away from ResNet!
- Very helpful in getting research and doing WebAssigns. My only complaint
is that sometimes service got really slow in the late afternoons when
so many people were online. I thinkit would be helpful if we could access
more applications fromthe Unity system in our room - such as XTracs,
Maple, SlickEdit, etc. Overall, I was very pleased with my ResNet service
and the helpfulness of the Computing Services peopleon the phone when
I called with questions. Oh - one other comment about the computer system
- NT Workstations SUCK! Sun Stations are much more user friendly.
- I think it's great, but a problem that is widely known is the fact
that when a bunch of people are accessing the servers, connections are
slow. It gets aggrivating but is expected at peak traffic hours of the
day.
- ResNet is a really great service that sure beats having to dial-up
and use slow modem connections! The ResNet staff is really courteous,
polite, efficient and extremely helpful! ResNet is the best thing for
school work. Having internet and network access in my room has made
my school work that much easier. The few times that my computer broke
this year was very hard. It was awful waiting in line at the computer
lab and not being able to do work at my own pace was bad. I really like
ResNet and I reccomend it to everyone.
-
- The only prob i have is you don't officially support linux i was told
by one of your people that i wouldnt' even be able to get on the network
with Redhat 5.2but i did, now i'm running redhat 6.0 and wouldn't ever
have a use for windows again thats it
- I used ResNet from Jan->March, then I moved to ES King Village. Where
(unfortunately) ResNet is not currently available. I would like to see
either ResNet available in ES King Village, or perhaps cut a deal with
Time Warner cable when they get the cable modem service installed in
Raleigh. After living with ResNet for 2 1/2 semesters, it is difficult
to go back to a (comparably) slow connection, especially when I would
like to use XTracs or something similar without having to hike all the
way to a computer lab, or wait 5 minutes for the initial screen to come
up, and then fight with it the whole time it is being used. The "Yes
Probably" as to resubscribing to ResNet is only if the service is available
to me in ESKV next semester.
- I think that the ResNet is a great addition to ncsu, especially considering
how the web is becoming more and more influencial in today's world.
The only thing that I think would be beneficial would be to have the
ability to have common files types (MS Office) across the labs and the
personal computers and possibly the ability to access your personal
computer's printer (while on the network neighbor hood) from workstation
computers. That way a large assignment or something else could be printing
as you are on your way to you room. It wouldn't cost the $.06 per page...
it would be whatever your personal printer costs to utilize.
- I enjoy your services but it can see things you hide from us. Such
as how screwed up the routers on campus are. Why dont you take that
extra $70 you got from every student and hire a company to fix the problem.
Its just that easy Im not calling anyone incompetent its just that they
dont know hwo to fix it. So hire someone who does and be done with it.
- Need to work on keeping it from messing up so often. I was without
my internet access for over 3 days during this semester.
- the best thing about ResNet is that it's FAST!
- great job!
- ResNet's speed and reliability made it quick and easy to use internet
resources and download large files and updates. I'd like to be able
to access my eos filespace and software via ResNet.
- I would like to see that all the computers on campus are the same
so I don't have to learn three different computer enviroments. I have
also learned that Autocad version14 is not available in most computer
labs. Why not upgrade all of the coputers.
- ResNet is good
- the price hurts... bad
- I believe that having ResNet computer access in students rooms has
helped tremendously with school work !!!! I do not understand all of
the terms in some of the questions, so I left them blank.I like ResNet
and I use it for what I need, but I do not have a good understanding
of computers. I have emailed questions to computer services twice and
their responces were in huge computer terms that I could not understand.
I would just like to bring this to your attention because not everyone
at NCSU is here to study technology, enginerring, math, etc. I enjoy
usig computers and would like to have a greater understanding of them
but find it hard to do so when my questions are either answered in a
language I don't understand (computerterms) or when my computing classes,
such as the one for forestry majors is too rudimentary. Thanks
- I am really going to miss have ResNet when I move off of campus
- network neighborhood NEVER works.
- ResNet is invaluable. I would suggest it to all my friends.
- Please, please, please let ResNet be available to students in UT.I
am not sure if it is, but if not, it would be a tremendous help.
- I love the speed that it offers.
- if there were some way to get ResNet access while off campus (via
a modem, adsl, or any connection, really), even if it meant me dialing
in, i would subscribe. Especially so if you included utilities for accessing
programs on the unity/eos file space. (although dialing in and using
telnet works fine for right now, but it doesn't allow me to use something
like objectcenter)
- I think that Telnet should be improved so that we may print from it
and read attachments.
- please get the network neighborhood to work correctly. it doesn't
work properly between different residence halls
- Upgrade to 100base-T and I might consider living on campus next semester.
- I think ResNet is a very useful service offered by this college. But,
like cable, I think the price is just a little too high. I know a lot
of people who would apply for the service it was slightly cheaper.
- ResNet is a great thing to have in dorm rooms. It has been totally
awsome getting to talk to friends at other schools and family though
AOL instant messenger. The speed of the internet is great. It is also
great how files can be transfered so quickly. It is bad though how the
network is limited to just your area. There was also not enough info
on how to set up your computer for the network. I had to request the
info from ResNet before I got any. Besides that it was good.
- I think it is a good service but I would like to see programs such
as maple and text editors that can be used for C++ and other things
available in labs available over ResNet
- ResNet is good. I recommend it to everyone.
- Access to Unity/EOS programs with a GUI interface would be a GREAT
help and would cut down the crowding in the computer labs (though bandwidth
would be consumed).
- Its great!!
- ResNet is the greatest thing about being on campus. I love it!!
- I will miss my ResNet connection when I move off campus. Wish there
was a better way to connect away from campus
- I frequently had difficulty connecting to ResNet... If it was the
service. It needs to be fixed.
- In number twenty, first two options already available to me as I run
linux, so I had no real opinion
- THANKS GUYS!!!!
- I have found that there are many times when thge ResNet server is
down. I would like it to always be running and not have these down times
- Wish you could run me some fiber out to Rock Quarry Road, Stan!!!
HEHEHEHEHE Aww, CMON! :-)
- ResNet is great and everyone that i have come into contact with concerning
any aspect of ResNet, and all other computing services for that matter
has been very polite and helpful
- ResNet is the coolest thing that goes on around here. computer labs
are way too crowded.
- Rumored Quake ping filters over OC48? Paid services should be able
to use the services for any purpose, including relaxing and playing
games.
- ResNet helped me to successfully set up a hotline server make quite
a bit of money then get in a hell of a lot of trouble.
- I think it would be very benificial if you somehow made it possible
to hook up to the system if you are a student living off campus.
- The service was very organized this year in comparison to last year.
keep up the good work since I will be moving off campus, I would like
to see more compatability from outside computers with the unix base.
I will have access to an t1 so I will basically have the same connection
at my apt as I do here. So if at all possible, I would like to be able
to work on csc projects, maple assignments, spreadsheets, graphics work,
etc etc without havng to email the work to my account and then cut and
paste everything, because too much data is lost or becomes compromised
in the process. So direct access to our campus account is a definite
needed improvement. Also, most of my friends work outside of school,
and with work, homework, classes, and sleep they don't have the time
to wait in line at a computer lab to do their work. Direct unity account
access would help this because they could easily access their accounts
from their room(apt, condo, house, whatever) or from work whenever they
have some free time. Thanks for giving me an oppurtunity to offer suggestion.
Says a lot for how concerned you are about providing quality service
for us students. Have a great summer. Later, Xxxxx Xxxxxxx (present
NCSU student/teaching assistant/employee)
- i love it but sometimes the connection is VERY shakey as far as speed.
- I had difficulty getting it installed.
- ResNet is a good system. However, the cost is very expensive no more
than I use it. Maybe is you had a hourly expense like online companies.
- In regards to statement 5, (If I am indeed correct in my thinking)
I did not receive the documentation, in that it was inconvenient to
go to Hillsborough Building to pick it up.
- It would be nice to have access to departmental programs.. CHASS labs
SPSS , etc...
- ResNet is a wonderful privilege to students living on campus. The
only complaint I have is that it is rather expensive to have in your
room. Other servers would be cheaper, but the reason I chose ResNet
is because it was easier. Simplicity comes before price to me, but price
may influence others.
