- it would be nice if there could be linux boxes in the sullivan lab. the
kiosks would be more helpful if i could use ssh to access my linux boxes.
As a perosn that uses linux and not windows (except sometimes when behind
firewalls) the virus software would not help me very much, but as a systems
administrator who has read over all the problems that everyone is having it
would be a good idea to make all of the people that use the evil that is windows
use up to date virus protection software. The only problem with this is that
there is no good way to inforce it. My suggestion would be if virus activity
was detected on a port you should block that port until that user has the
problem fixxed. As for the over 6 machine that i listed, they are all behind
a firewall and i am only using one ip (good luck trying to ping me). I'm not
that happy with how our bandwidth is being throtled but I can also understand
why. I don't think there would be that much of a problem with bandwidth if
you just block the ports that p2p file shreing programs use. If someone can
come up with a good reason as to why it should be unblocked then it can be
unblocked after that. I would enjoy a 100mb connection even if it was just
to the rest of campus. I would like to be able to move files between my room
and my office faster. I can't really complain to much, but these are mostly
just suggestions. Thanks (user name removed) Student in Computer Science

- ResNet is a great service. This year I have noticed that network performance
has been inconsistant and frequently slow. I'd like to see improved bandwidth
and more user friendly LAN type network features (i.e. local file sharing,
better performing LAN gaming, etc...).
- great service
- I never had problems with it and I am very satisfied.
- Downtimes are never announced and I encountered a number of them while
I was trying to do online research in my room
- ResNet is good. Give Aaron a raise.
- ResNet is good. Give Aaron a raise.
- My computer has had so many diff probs and i don't download much of anything
and i have no clue what is wrong with it. It was fine b4 i came to state.
I'm not saying it was ResNet.
- its great
- recently i have been recieving many virus emails. i don't know if this
is something that ResNet can prevent, but it is becoming a big inconvenience.
norton stops the viruses, but it's just a hassle.
- sometimes ResNet gets really slow and crappy at night, and this inhibits
my game playing ability.
- The free Norton AntiVirus program is great. My computer would be in trouble
without.
- ResNet rules!!
- I like ResNet's speed. I'm not quite sure what those Kiosks are for, just
to check email? I'd rather check it in my room.
- resNet was slow at the begining of the year, however, it got running smoothly
in a few weeks. no other complaints. thanks
- I got a virus :(
- I like the sevice, it's a fast conection.
- System is very good. Although sometimes can perform slowly.
- More virus awareness is needed. When the recent virus came around through
email, many of my friends go it b/c they didn't know to install an attachement
that tries to open itself or an attachment that they have no idea what it
is.
- ResNet was most of the time a reliable and fast internet access. There
were times however that the system was slow and I did receive a bug and had
to download a patch from ResNet. Other than that it was good.
- Not a lot of students know that Norton is available for free. I know a
lot of people with viruses. Also, the computers in the labs need to be checked
regularly for malfunctions. North's computers rarely work properly. There
should be a link on every computer desktop to report problems to Computer
Facilities. This makes it easier. General knowledge about floppy disks and
common problems needs to be addressed to students. I've had several disk problems
here.
- Pretty fast, reliable, and worth the $80
- Keep up the good work =)
- I am pleased to learn that NSCU offers Norton as I just migrated my system
to Win2k and my previous version was incompatible.
- Overall, ResNet was extremely beneficial to me this year. I don't believe
that it would have been as easy to access information if it wasn't available.
- ResNet is great. And from the email I recieved I'm glad to know that you
are finally cracking down on the proliferation of viruses over the network.
One time I started up my computer (before I got a firewall) and when it started
the Norton Realtime scanner feature picked up 87 infected files. Needless
to say this worried me and I immediately downloaded ZoneAlarm as my firewall.
Also I prefer the linux boxes in computer labs for most applications mainly
because they login quicker than the NT machines. Plus what is up with the
Macs on the fourth floor of Poe those things act like they are on a dialup
connection.
- Thanks for the free Norton AntiVirus software.
- I love You.
- I didn't have any problems with ResNet this year...and when my roommate
was having problems, you guys came to her rescue. Keep up the good work. :
)
- ok
- thank you
- Well since I've been here ResNet has acted up a little. Sometimes it wouldn't
even work...sometimes the connections were soo slow but overall ResNet has
been very helpful.
- i love speed
- hihi
- Good connection most of the time.
- More Linux, penguins Rule!
- N/A
- I love ResNet, great job guys!
- I downloaded the first AntiVirus from the Computing Essentials CD and also
just recently got the new edition from the NCSU ResNet website when I heard
about it's availability from my friend! You guys are absolutely awesome for
having that available for students! THANKS SO MUCH!!!
- none
- It is a very good program. Keep up the good work!!!
- Network has alot of viruses on it.
- it would be nice if you could access other websites from the kiosk computers
than just the ncsu site
- Works great
- i love having a fast connection!
- WOW, you guys offered Norton for free!!! Man, wish I would have know that
before paying like 40 dollars for some third party vendor... :(Let me know
if you guys are offering it next semester and where to go to get it because
I need it bad... My computer is disease stricken with viruses :_(
- it was really easy to use and i am glad it is avaliable
- Fast as hell.
- very fast and reliable, a little expensive though
- Nice and fast. :-)
- I have been satisfied with my ResNet service.
- I, and other students I know of have had trouble with Windows ME and its
Plug and Play feature, I have had to turn off Plug and Play in order to run
ResNet here on campus.
- send out emails 24-48hrs before shutting down ResNet!!!!
- ResNet is fabulous...it is one of the reasons why I have decided to live
on campus one more year. Eventhough I spend alot of my time on the computer
doing no school related things, it is no one's fault but my own...
- ResNet is fast and a great service. But I wish I had known about Norton
Anti-Virus. I could have used that.
- I really did not have a major problems with it. Overall, it was very helpful
and useful.
- NA
- I like the network connection that is advailable, but there are a lot of
times that the network is really slow. Plus, of the advailable bandwidth,
at times i utilize a maximum of 9% when it should be much higher. But I am
satisfied with the overall ResNet service.
- I think ResNet should work on the problem of webmail being extremely slow
at times and maybe find a way to work on the pop-up issues if possible.
- its a good service, and the anti-virus is a good idea
- No comments
- I am on a macintosh I have not installed any virus software and I have
never had any virus infection. I do not use outlook. I think its ridiculus
to require me to use anti-virus software given the fact that I dont use outlook.
- Instead of saying ResNet is mandatory and is $80 dollars extra, just add
it to the cost of the room and say the rooms come with ResNet standard (at
least the ethernet).
- I really like the ResNet but sometimes my computer gets really slow and
then it shuts down, I don't know if it is because of the ResNet or not.
- I enjoyed my semester of ResNet, and I look forward to using it again next
year.
- Excellent service, very satisfied!
- I tried to install the NAV but it didn't work.
- I absolutely love the ResNet service. It is so much faster and more convenient
than a dial-up or other service and it is a great student resource.
- ResNet has proved to be a great service here at NCSU. I have been real
happy with it.
- I like the 100 Mb/s connection in Bragaw, it is noticable when accessing
large files such as powerpoint presentations or large adobe acrobat reader
files.
- wireless ResNet would be great
- blah
- Good, fast service. Keep it up
- very nice. only went down once to my recollection. keep it up.
- ResNet rules!! Fast connection...
- I think ResNet is a great way for students to acess information at a higher
rate than most internet connections. However, ResNet should not be forced
on any student especially if they do not have or own a computer.
- ResNet is great!! No negative points seen.
- It is great to have access to the internet 24 hrs a day, also the speed
at which you are connected makes you want to be connected 24 hrs a day.
- i love it. it is very fast and reliable. i would be lost without. NCSU
email is essential because that is how your professors contact you.
- It was fast and reliable.
- Recantly, the residents at Wood Hall have been getting kicked off and prevented
from reconnection to internet services for periods of about 5-10 min. Maybe
someone should look into that.
- ResNet is cool
- it is a good thing
- fast and reliable
- thanks for your help and for providing such great service.
- Thank goodness for ResNet
- I like the speed of the internet connection on campus. It is so much quicker
than at home.
- I like the fast internet connection.
- My other antivirus software is called "Linux". Thanks for a great year
- i hate that the computing "kiosk" screens will shut off after a certain
amount of time. at least a particular one that i use in talley does. i will
try to reply to an email, and it will automatically shut off my session, because
i took too long typing my response. this is ridiculous. only ONCE did i encounter
a "line" waiting to use the computer, and that is because the other one was
"out of order." i should hope if a person sees others behind them, they'll
move on. there should not be an automatic shut-off on the session time.furthermore,
i think there should be a lab in the library that hosts windows on IBM compatible
computers, where you can do work. for example, the workstation computers by
the 1st floor help desk only run internet. and the unity lab has all macintosh
computers, which are difficult for some people to use, and have limited programs.
perhaps i am just not aware of the resources available, but i think there
are not windows-running IBM compatible computers in the library, that allow
use of processing programs. i think this is necessary.
- Why isn't email prescanned, or looked at for viruses. You follow anyone
who sends out pornography, but I have received more viruses via the webmail
account than anywhere. Can't something tbe done to find out who is putting
them up, and taking away their ResNet priveleges?
- I would really like to see Wireless Access Points installed in the study
lounges in the residence halls. This would be a great addition to the campus
network.
- connection at becton was slower than other places on campus
- Trojans seem to be the most prolific virii that I have been attacked with.
i've put 6 seperate IP's on permenate ban/ port block. i recommend Norton
Personal Firewall for computers on the network.
- service is great...More online documentation of the service and how it
is set up would be useful.
- I was happy with the speed etc. of my ResNet.
- ResNet is wonderful.. it is the biggest thing I will miss when I move off
campus.
- I have always had problems with the macintosh systems. I really avoid them
at all cost. Also I like the new computers as opposed to the old one that
do not carry enought programs and take a while, like the Sun and Macintosh.
Thank you
- I wish the switch I'm on in North didn't suck. :pThe network processor
on it is choked (I can't even send from one PC to the other through it but
at about 150k/s). A real switch should let me do that at 10mbit/s ideally.
Also, normal downloads are limited at about 60k/s per tcp connection, which
would not be acceptable from dsl or cable, much less ResNet.
- I love ResNet! It is very convient and is well worth the money. I wouldn't
be able to survive without it.
- My ResNet connection has run great all year long. Keep up the great work!
- i love ResNet! :+)
- ResNet is fast. yay
- Now that I know Antivirus is available, I will use it. Thanks! I think
that is very usefull and kind of the university to provide this to students
and faculity.
- keep up the good work
- ResNet is - for me - a vital, necessary service and one of the main reasons
that I live on campus. If I could make a suggestion, I feel that it would
be good if information regarding network usage and outages were easier to
obtain.
- AOL Instant messenger is provided on all of the windows 2000 machines,
and I think it would be very helpful if it was something that could be added
and loaded from the unix machines. Though this is obviously not the primary
use of computer lab computers, so many people would use and apreciate this
service that it would be worth the effort to make it possible. Thanks!
- I think the help website should be updated and more understandable. It
is hard to find what you need using the search.
- I was very pleased to be able to have constant access to the internet.
- n/a
- make the anti virus availability know at the beginng of the school year.
- n/a
- I really like ResNet because it is extremely fast. Suck speed cuts down
on the time that I have to wait, thus allowing me to study a lot more!
- Overall I would say that the ResNet connection was very good. It was rarely
slow and I wasable to do everything that I needed to do.
- I don't know if this already exists, but I'd like to see wireless access
in at least certain strategic locations, like the brickyard or right around
dorms so I would be able to take a laptop outside and do work/study
- I really like this internet conection that you have because is very fast!!!
- install cisco aironet all over campus
- The computing kiosk never work!!! Not a single time!
- no additional comments
- I love the hassle free aspect of ResNet and wish i could get it everywhere!
- great service
- Great service except for occasional lapses. Also, it's slowed down considerably
in the 3 years I've used it. :(
- I love the network here on campus its the best thing here almost. Very
convienent and efficent.
- What the hell are those kiosks for anyway?
- Service occasionally flickers out for us on fraternity court, but overall
it is good. Only, during the summer, when your service would normally cut
off after exams are over with, you should email or alert people to the date
when it will be cut off so that we will be able (for those of us living on
fraternity court) to sign up for summer ResNet service.
- Pretty good service
- Very fast and reliable. Thanks!
- ResNet is a great tool. It is so fast it alows you to get any information
you need very quick.
- none
- great service!switch Lee over to 100Mbs!! :-)
- alan and mark are cool
- i like how fast it is.
- I love ResNet
- the service is very fast ,and I like it a lot
- The switch to Norton Antivirus was definitely a good switch, I like Norton's
system and interface 10 times better than I did McAfees
- The frequent black-outs piss me off.
- all unity lab should eventually get rid of those slow, unstable window
machines and switch to the macintosh system. plus a student should be able
to access their M and K drive in any one of these computer labs on campus
- There were many times when my internet connection would cut out anywhere
from 5minutes to several hours. I do not know why this occurs, if it is my
computer or the connection, but my roommate did not have the problems that
I did.
- I really enjoy my ResNet service and I believe it is available at a reasonable
price. I have had a few problems this year but nothing serious. Overall I
am very happy with ResNet.
- ResNet employees have been very helpul and came within a very short amount
of time of requesting there service. I have been extremely pleased with ResNet!
- ResNet is too expensive for NCSU students, should be cheaper.
- It would be nice if the system could be upgraded to accomodate file sharing
like kaaza. not essential but it would definitely be nice
- ResNet, keep it smmmmmmmooookin!!
- Excellent service
- Kiosk never really work nor is it really helpful b/c of its set up.wireless
network in the library IS A VERY GOOD ADDITION. I can't get wireless network
in other buildings to work w/ my labtop. help@ncsu.edu has help me a lot...
THANKz to everyone works there. Printquota is hard to buy b/c of hours of
operation and location. Is it possible to buy printquota by transferring money
from Allcampus card? or bill to cashier's office? The new Windows 2000 OS in
unity labs won't allow me to configure my AFS settings like the old Window
OS does.
- ResNet is cool, and convinent
- I like using ResNet because most of the time it provides fast access to
the Internet.
- Very helpful especially since I do not have internet access at home.
- n/a
- I like ResNet but it's unreasonable to require it, not everyone even has
a computer.
- I changed my password and the NT machines will only let me log in with
my original password. I don't use those uneless I have to anyway because they
take forever to log in and I sometimes I can't get anything to work. Need
more UNIX and less NT.
- keep the network from shutting down
- Its fast, cheap, and reliable, but its unfair to those without a computer
or not wanting internet to require that they buy ResNet service if they live
in a dorm. There is no excuse for such behavior of the ResNet staff.
- I used the computer lab in Sullivan Hall much more fequently last semester
becasue I did not have a computer. And I still used it becasue I foudn i much
easier to complete E115 outlabs there rather in my room.
- I didn't dl the virus program from ncsu because its barebone. Get them
to provide a professional version.
- ResNet is fast, usefull and generally very good
- I think it's wrong of ResNet to charge students,who don't have a computer!
- ResNet was a good service to use because one could use the internet while
talking on the phone
- RESNET connection rules!
- ResNet is one of the best services I have experienced. It helps tremendously
in achieving academic success.
- They never returned my phone call when I needed help.
- The wireless networks are a good start and are highly efficient. I very
often go to the library to check out a laptop with a wireless card and sit
in a corner somewhere and get my work done. They are very fast, and can handle
a bunch of users, though I know the cards are a little expensive. Invest more
in this..
- I consulted ResNet three times over this year. All three times they sent
someone over to fix my computer. The first time to just install ResNet and
to get it to work. The second time to install it on another computer because
my other computer had crashed and I bought another one. The person came over
and he spent about 3 hours there messing with my computer only to mess my
computer up and not get anything fixed about it. Later that week another guy
came over to try to get the Internet working also. This time this person stayed
about 2 hours. He then continued to tell me that the person that came before
had done many things wrong trying to install ResNet and he knew it but just
left it messed up. This person continued to try and fix my computer, only
to crash my NEW computer that I had just purchased. Then he left only saying
there was nothing they could do because they only deal with the Internet.
I found this very RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL. I only wanted the Internet, which
these guys were supposed to know how to do, but I only ended up with ANOTHER
crashed computer. That person left me in my room with nothing to do or how
to fix my computer and just with a sorry. My friend came later and was able
to restore my computer by setting it to its last known good memory, which
for some reason the computer guy that came to fix my computer did not know
how to do. I will NEVER ask for assistance from ResNet again and I strongly
encourage no one to also. Many people have complained about the people that
came to fix their Internet only to mess up their computers. I could not believe
that guy crashed my computer and just left and said sorry. This is a terrible
service I feel as of now and I hope that this will be fixed or train these
people a little better and if they do crash someone's computer at least be
held responsible!
- need more anti-virus help
- thanks for the super fast connection
- I loved having the speed of ResNet!
- I like ResNet, it is very fast, but i had problems with my K drive and
need to get that fixed. I like how there are computers with internet all over
campus to use, it makes it easy to get things from email or personal drives
with out loosing disks and CDs. its also nice to beable to go work on homework
between classes without having to go all the way home. I also used the lab
in HA 108 for class, which was very helpful. keep up the good work!
- ResNet is a very nice feature to have on campus.
- ResNet is probably the best connection to the internet I will ever have.
- When I got the Plug-in Play virus in December, I was VERY thankful that
ResNet had a virus patch on the web page to fix the problem, because my computer
was completely messed up.
- The kiosks are very helpful when I'm at other universities. I have no need
to use one at NCSU because I can use the lab or just go up to my dorm room
to access the internet.
- i do not feel students who do not have ResNet should be charged for ResNet
- I could never ffigure out the kiosk because it did not hook to hotmail
my email preference
- The laundry building is an excellent place to study and use computers.
The updated windows dell computers work great and the sun microsystems are
always what I use for email. Printers are down quite frequently. Copy machines
are unreliable. Kinko's is a sure shot when copying.
- It gets too cold throughout the school year in a majority of the computer
labs I was wondering if there is a way to change that somewhat next year
- I have a problem with accessing the computers at Avent ferry And Stroud
center. When I log in, it always say that there is an error in the Kerberos
Library and my icons and toolbar go awa. I left an email but nothing was done
about it. I would appreciate someone looking into this while I am gone. Thanks
- I have not asked any students in the dorms about ResNet, but I hope to
be a user ofthe ResNet service myself starting this coming fall semester.
- i understand that it is cheaper to charge everyone $80 a semester for ResNet,
but i do not use it. i use my computer in my studio and don't need the connection
in the dorms. i don't think i should have to pay for something that i am not
using.
- I didn't feel it was fair to charge me $80 last year for ResNet when I
didn't have a computer.
- First, you people are HIGHWAY ROBBERS for charging everybody for ResNet,
whether they have a computer or not. our actions show extreme immorality and
greed, and a desire to take advantage of students everywhich way possible.
I came to the US 6 years ago because it is the land of the free and all that
bullshit, but now I see that that was just a smokescreen. As far as I am concerned,
you can all go to Hell. Well, you ARE going to Hell, whether you like it or
not. Some of you people call yourselves Christians. Jesus must be suffering.
I am not sorry for my harsh words, because you are obviously not sorry for
screwing students over. Another thing: Those iMac kiosks at Talley, they log
you out after 5 minutes, and because of that I have lost a few emails that
I was composing at the time. There is no sign on the machines to that effect.
So, go to Hell again. I have been at NCSU for 2 years as a graduate student,
and I have been robbed by Housing, Dining, Wolfline, ITECS, Comtech, ResNet,
Athletics, and every other student services office you can think of. I am
glad to be leaving this HORRIBLE and HATEFUL place. (User info removed).
P.S. Why am I writing all this here? Because I have tried to talk to administrators
through proper channels, but I have never been taken seriously, for 2 years
now, so might as well voice my anger where I can. You can laugh at me and
think of me as childish after reading my rant, but frankly, I don't care anymore.
- I think that you people should not charge for ResNet to all, who don't
even use one. Like me. ResNet should be charged to them whom use it. Keep
a lock system like Cable, in which the people who pay for it, should get it
and not everybody should be charged who don't even use or own a computer.
- I wish I did not have to pay the 80 dollar ResNet fee because I never used
the connection.
- I do not understand why all students are being charged for ResNet even
if they do not have or use their own computers here on campus. My tuition
understandably goes towards Unity labs, which all students have access to.
Why am I being fined for something I have no access to?
- I should not have to pay for ResNet if I don't own a computer
- the labs have been very helpful through out the year especially not having
a computer around
- I think ResNet is o.k. but don't jack up the price anymore and try not
to make things part of a required fee for all students. Some of us poorer
folks can't afford it.
- I still don't think that they should make everyone pay for ResNet, even
if they don't have a computer. It seems more like the people who don't have
computers are paying $80 each semester to access the computer labs which are
supposed to be free. But on the other hand, making everyone pay for ResNet
ensures that every dormroom will have internet access and that relieves alot
of the confusion from deciphering which rooms have access like they used to
do.
- Love ResNet!!!!
