XP Pro
- There aren't any.
- dvd player
- Windows XP Professional
- instant messenger

| Are there any services that Information Technology Division
should provide that are not currently provided? |
Computer Owners: - no, they are doing a good job
- I think the Norton Anitvirus should have a feature that can check e-mail
atachments by right clicking.
- I think that everything is readily provided.
- UNCAP OUR UPLOADS!!!!! Seriously. Thats just stupid. I don't use it
for piracy, and resent having snail like transfer times to my home
and non university freinds.
- free print labs.. they are essential for many students, though i don't
know if ResNET is responsible for that
- More info on the wireless internet access available.
- Firewall
- More wireless network coverage in the library, Nelson, Talley, student
lounges in residence halls....
- I THINK YOU SHOULD MAKE SURE THAT IF YOU'RE GOING TO UPGRADE SOME OF
THE SUN STATIONS, YOU NEED TO UPGRADE ALL OF THEM!!! THE ONE IN MY
OFFICE IN DAINELS SUCKS!!! (MY OFFICE IS 131-H)
- Decent upload speeds.
- A firewall program, or free updates for one.
- Set up a software similiar to WolfCall except in reverse - allowing
users to access the files on their hard drives of their computer
in their residence hall, etc. So it would be possible to access work
that is not
on your K drive from a computer lab on campus.
- It would be nice if IT could at least refer you to a person that could
help with software problems, I understand that IT is there for ResNet
problems and there is a liability issue when assisting w/ software
but for those who have software problems they often dont know where they
can get help. It would be nice if someone could at least tell you
how
to fix the problem but allow you to fix it yourself, at your own
risk.
- do free laptops like other schools
- Help over instant messenger.
- fire wall software from Norton...
- comprehensive service...it's nice to have workers who can come to your
room and fix the problem.
- other norton products would be cool to get. If not free, maybe at a
reduced price and upgrades from ITD for free or reduced priced for
students.
- would like to see custom hostnames available for off-campus dynamic
IP students/faculty
- I do not know if they handle this, but maybe a better email interface
program to allow blocking. Getting spammed on the unity account is
frustrating because there doesn't seem to be a way to block unwanted
emails.
- Firewalls
- you should give a condensed version of what websites freshmen need
to know, where computer labs are and other things that are not obvious
but
don't intersperse it with a bunch of crap that we don't need to know.
- along with norton, offer office XP (power point, excel, etc) as a program
that we can use on our own computers.
- Quality Firewalls for students.
- Not sure who is responsible for this area, but my request is to have
PHP supporting webspace on www4.
- Nortan Internet Security or Black Ice
- I have a few suggestions for the addition of 802.11b connectivity.
I think I read that Talley Student Center has been considered for wireless
and I feel that would be a very worthwhile initiative. Also wireless
connectivity in the Atrium is is very sporatic because I think it
may
bleed over from the library, but I would suggest an AP to be placed
in the Atrium for better connectivity. And one last suggestion, maybe
a
few wired connections in the Unity labs at a small table or two for
the convienience of being able to sit down and use your laptop instead
of
a Unity machine since you may have data/programs on your laptop not
available through Unity.
- A discount program for Resnet. Resnet is becoming very expensive, and
me being the college student that I am, can't afford all of these
expenses.
- discounted student rates on common/popular programs/OS's
- Wireless access for large common areas such as the brickyard, Bragaw
Ampitheatre, Tucker Beach, Quad Courtyard, Courtyard of the Carolinas.
- prevent pop-ups
- no it's efficient for now. but security can be increased. and also
the webspace given to each student may be increased in size. it's not
enough
for many folders. there can be a whole campus trnasfer trash to transfer
the files of lerger sizes.
- Not that I can think of at this time
- Add a recent copy of Adobe Acrobat on the Computing Essentials CD.
Computer labs should be expanded and print quota should be available
for purchase
in all labs. Printers need to be serviced more often.
- CD burning capabilities on the Unix-based machines.
- firewall services
- I would like there to be more wireless access around campus.
- More information on webspace development
- Microsoft Office for students would be great, for those students that
computer did not come with Word
- logging onto the campus computers in labs take forever. Isn't there
a way to speed up the time it takes to log in
- Plug and Play USB ability (for compact flash readers , etc)
- Access to windows prgrams on the network in the dorm rooms.. for example
solidworks etc
- more prizes
- Get faster computers in the library to replace the old ones that take
so long to load pages.
- wireless internet in dorms
- Linux, Windows, and Unix computers in all labs
- There should be a tech service on call that can solve hardware and
os problems
- Not quite sure.. seems pretty good to me at the moment. If I end up
needing something later I'll let you know.
- pretty good lot of help
- faster upload
- use chapel hill's system of registering cards, and only allowing one
computer per room to help on the usage of bandwith in non-educational
related activities (games and downloads)
- Alot of labs and other classes use things like labview, excel and powerpoint.
I know a lot of students have difficulty with, or have simply never
used these programs before coming to school. There may be some kind of
assistance
available for such students, and if there is then I think it should
be advertised more. If there is not any such assistance then maybe it
would
be beneficial for there to be.
- Desktop Weather fom WRAL or The Weather Channel
- instant messanger computer help would be great
- Site licenses for software for student personal computers
- The current services are sufficient.
- It would be nice if ResNet offered a means by which students could
voluntarily be held accountable for what they look at on the web. For
example, they
could offer an optional service that emails a summary of all websites
visited by a specific student to someone (parent, friend, etc.) While
ResNet is very useful, I have seen it hurt a lot of people by exposing
them to things they should never see. And some means by which to
deal with this temptation would be nice.
- This might be something farther in the future, but maybe they could
start selling the surplus computers, fixed already so they can make
more money than the computers just sitting at the warehouse.
- I think your service is already worth more than what we pay for it...Great
job!
- print quota was always a problem... every time i really needed it and
didn't have any, i didn't have the time to walk to talley and get
it (all my classes are in weaver labs.. i'm biomed engin.) it would be
a
huge help if print quota could be added to my account by way of phone/email/instant
messenger and deducted from all campus monies or just added to my
campus account (the one that gets sent to my parents... i don't think
they would
mind a $5 every 2 months, espeically since it was projects and papers
that are getting printed)
- Realm Kit Linux support
- I can't think of anything that you guys don't already provide.
- No, great service.
- Let us use money in our All Campus accounts for printing and especially
copying.
- they should provide help for problems other than internet help
- no not that I can think of
- No ideas
- I think that everything is okay.
- A computer repair center, for those who do not have transportation
to take it to an electronic store.
- they should inform you about wolfcopy before you have to print something
on campus and can not. Information about where to get computer hardware
if your personal computer should need to have parts replaced. (besides
the go on the internet or look it up in the yellow pages answer)
- Perhaps free night classes on webdesign
- better wireless service, even though I don't currently own a laptop,
especially the library bookstakes and the brick yard
- I think they do a good job and supply everything that is needed
- I think computing assistance at each of tha labs for at least certain
hours would be very helpful.
- none that I can think of`
- email help
- they should have a program like Black Ice or some other program that
will allow you to monitor people who are trying to hack into your
computer. I had one person hack into my computer and put a virus that
caused me
to have to reinstall windows, and corrupted alot of my files.
- Better virus help. Almost everyone I know has some sort of virus on
their computer.
- A secure webmail interface with a GUI that loads all at once instead
of dynamically generated html pages. I hate to use webmail because
I dont like to reload the pages to see changes. When I click a message
and push delete, I want it deleted NOW, not after I go to a second
page
and confirm and then go back to the first page. I also want the ability
to change the name of my ncsu email address. spam is a big problem.
I want anti-spam software added to ncsu mail. Your servers should not
accept
1000 messages from the same (external to ncsu) IP in a short time.
- to tell people that they can contact people if they need help on their
computer
- Norton Antivirus doesn't work and crashes many systems.
- The ability to purchase print quota online!!!!! PLEASE!!!
- no, you guys provide quite a lot of services
- No, you do a good job :)
- individual firewalls (zone alarm, blackICE, etc)
- Nope...I think they're good as they are.
- McAfee Antivirus because I still get virus infections from Nimda, after
installing Norton. Also, a firewall software would be nice, since
I don't want people to hack my computer, and the IP's are static.
- Yes
- Norton anitvirus sucks! there are better out there. only problem with
resnet i had was when the connecter in the wall died
- Wireless Net Access
- Far greater (ideally campus-wide) wireless access. At least provide
it in Talley!
- Security prgms and firewalls
- Reserving custom host names for the next semester.
- help for computer hardware problems, not only network. to my knowledge
this type of service is not available
- Virus Updates offered through Norton.
- Firewall software. There have been countless times when my computer
has been tried to be hacked into from an on-campus IP address. If
i didnt have my own firewall running, who knows what kind of damage might
have
been done.
- more wireless access and network availability in 2nd floor Leazar (design
studios). wireless extending across Hillsborough and in commonly
used areas like Court of Carolinas, grassy areas outside dorms
- Anything that is cheap and could help students use the network better.
For an example, a firewall.
- EOS/redhat linux in ever lab, much more user friendly and easier to
use!
- don't know what they do to begin with
- MORE WIRELESS COVERAGE : ) in the dorms and in the pretty areas around
dorms and buildings. anywhere people study, there should be wireless
access. make it a priority next year i'm so glad that Syme now has
Nomad access!!!
- I think ITD should allow students more options for webhosting than
they currently get.
- more assistance, let people know that you are there more because many
students are apathetic
- maybe coming to the room to help set up
- an update for norton
- Faster Connections
- Frontpage in the labs would have been very very useful this semester.
Frontpage extensions to student webpages would be cool but not needed.
- Pop-Up Stopper
- None that I can think of. Seems adequate at present.
- wireless acces in the dorms
- No, not that i know of
- I can't think of any in particular.
- no not that i can think of at this time
- nope...seems to be working pretty good
- I am satisfied with the services provided by the ITD
- Firewall software Better web hosting (PHP, SQL, email) More storage
space on K: More cool free software on the Computing Essentials CD
=)
- I have not been there so I cannot answer this.
- I wish I knew if I could use a program that the school has on my personal
computer. Like maple or power point. That would be very useful.
- Network Mapping? physical map, connection speed checks, small stuff
like that
- A campus-only peer-to-peer sharing program available to students.
- More memory space for each Unity account with no additional cost to
the user.
- personal firewall
- I think that including more areas with wireless connections would be
a great bennifit to the students. Often times I would like to use
my laptop outside or in buildings that don't currently have this avaible.
- More help with viruses.
- The ability to plug in more than 2 ethernet cables/computers per room.
- DVD playing software on computers with dvd drives the ability to use
compact flash adapters on windows 2000 systems
- NO everything is fine.
- 24 Hour Computer Service
- MORE WIRELESS ACCESS! WIRELESS TALLEY CENTER! WIRELESS DORMS! WIRELESS
EVERYWHERE! Wireless currently installed is great--we need more.
- I find the current services to be more than enough.
- vireless internet, like at Chapel Hill would be a great addition. Also
free printing like at Chapel Hill.
- BRING APPLETALK BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- My roommate is not very computer savy and she was not aware that she
had to have anti-virus softwear on her computer (and that it wasn't
automatically there.) Since she has gotten a worm, you all have spent
hours trying
to fix her computer and get anti-virus softwear installed. You could
try making students more aware that it is a requirement and that most
likely it isn't alredy "there" on your computer like a lot
of things are.
- file sharing among students within legal standards
- Better software for KIOSK computers!
- updates on new virus
- not really, i can't think of any.
- Room assistance, talking to someone on the telephone doesn't always
work. And if you're having computer problems...how is Instant Messaging
gonna help?!
- none I can think of
- Free Anti-Virus for a Linux OS would be nice though its not nearly
needed as much as Anti-Virus for other OSes.
- a pop-up stopper and an ftp program
- 24 hour hotline assistance for computer problems.
Non Computer Owners
- Ability to add programs.
- How to get affordable computers for those who can't afford them.
- check out lap tops out of the library
- I guess the services are fine
since I haven't had to use them.
- I am very satisfied
|
| Feel free to add comments below about ResNet or any of
the above questions |
Computer Owners: - Keep up the good work
- I think the slow upload speed blew ass. I wanted a faster upload.
- ResNet has been very helpful since i have been on campus. I haven't
found any problems with ResNet since I have been here.
- It would be nice if the computer kiosks around campus were able to
run Internet Explorer or Netscape.
- UNCAP OUR UPLOADS!!!!! Seriously. Thats just stupid. I don't use it
for piracy, and resent having snail like transfer times to my home
and non university freinds.
- When I move off-campus, I want to have access to wireless internet
while I am on campus during and between classes. I would like to have
more
information about this, or if there is information available, I would
like to know where to find it.
- Faster...Faster...Faster!!!
- The cap on in/outgoing bandwidth needs to be removed. We pay way too
much for ResNet for half of the bandwidth to be cut off from us!!!!!!!!!!
- The internet connection is awesome. If it was faster that would be
even more awesome.
- LIKE I SAID BEFORE, PLEASE BRING BACK OFFICE FOR THE LINUX MACHINES!!!
- great!
- The kiosk computers hardly ever work or are very slow. The ones at
the gym never work! Either fix them or do something else.
- Sometiems there is loss of bandwith.
- The limiting of the outgoing traffic was annoying but I understand
why it was done and agree with the decision.
- #22 the link was not working.
- I like the ResNet service, althought when using instant messenger the
service will lose connection a lot, so that's the only problem I
can think of.
- very helpful when things broke on my computer
- Great deal for the speed and uptime.
- I would just as that you please upgrade Lee to 100Mbit or better for
the comming year.
- fast internet is great. service has always been helpful. people at
Hillsborough have always been knowledgable.
- Resnet is great!!!
- I love the internet service, I also use it for XBOX live. Outside of
a few instances this year, it is very reliable. I know people off
campus who have Broadband, and their service is going down ALL the time.
One
reason I stay on campus is for the fast, reliable service, and that's
no joke.
- more personal space in the K drive would be very nice!
- Keep up the good work.
- ResNet is a good thing to have and it's very helpful. The only problem
I've ran into is when ResNet is broken, it takes a long time for
it get back started.
- you should highlight the question that I missed, I missed it two times,
and almost gave up on submiting the survey.
- Overall i think resNet and the computer labs have beneifitted me grately.
Sometimes i feel like I wouldnt get any work done with out the labs.
The only complaint I have is that when working on very large projects
that require extend stay in the lab you reach a point were the computer
monitors are cleanecd by IT staff. The IT staff spray very strong
chemicals on the monitor even when your are using it. This is very uncomfortable
and it would be nice if the IT staff wouldnt clean the monitors with
people working on them. I also think the tucker lab should have more
computers even if they were not top of the line.
- ResNet at NC State is definately a very nice thing to have in the dorms.
The speed exceptional service of the people that maintain it are
greatly appreciated.
- I am satisfied with the quality of service provided by renet
- :)
- The only time I used a kiosk (imacs in the library) it would not log
out of my email no matter what I did and was very unsettling. No
matter how many times I pressed the Log Out buttons, no matter what someone
typed into the email login page it would always take them directly
to
MY email. After that I never used a kiosk again.
- I think it's a very good system...I am a junior and have never had
any complaints. Having the two internet connections in the room is critical
for living on campus and getting work done from the room.
- great
- Great job. Keep up the system and you wont have any complaints from
me.
- Hey guys :p
- Keep up the good work. Resnet is great!
- Resnet is great really had no problems with it at all this year it
was never down, never had to wait to get anything done. Thanks it made
my
year a great success
- The kiosk stations suck. Whenever I have tried to login to my e-mail
this year, it takes me to someone elses e-mail account.
- It's great... sometimes a little slow... but majority of the time it's
fine.
- thanks :)
- I was very impressed by ResNet and by the help that I recieved when
going to the help desk. The people there were quick and very friendly
and I never hesitated to return when needed.
- this is a great opportunity to share my ideas
- more computers in high traffic areas (like the library) and advertise
to more engineering people about telnet, cause it is really helpful,
specially transfering files and accessing software (like maple).
- i'm good
- I love it.
- I did have a problem earlier this year, and the Resnet guys came by
twice to fix it, very nice experience
- ResNet connection in rooms are too expensive.
- I've never had any complaints :)
- Other students who do not have a computer to use ResNet feel that it
is not fair for them to pay for these services when they can not
use them. I know that it may be hard to keep track on who uses ResNet
and
who doesn't, but it may be a good suggestion to let the students
use their login information to gain access to ResNet in their rooms.
- ResNet has worked well to fullfill my needs, I do not believe it needs
to be greatly changed or modified.
- ok
- cool stuff, allow apple airport base stations in rooms for wireless
printing etc
- very fast connections which is great!!
- Again, one of the reasons I have chosen to live on campus is because
of the dependable internet access. Keep it up!
- my computer was hacked several times. there must be more security protections
for the resnet.
- I think ResNet is great. It's one of those things that makes colleges
fun and enojable. Not to mention much more productive.
- Very quick and prompt service by Resnet when I need it! Technicians
are very nice, easy to work with, quick, and knowledgeable!
- I like Resnet. You guys seem to have your stuff in order.
- there are basics on how to publish our own webpages, but not on design,
or links to sites to show us how
- ResNet is a great service, it is fast and reliable
- You guys run an excellent network service, and it is one of the main
reasons I choose to live on campus!
- I love the speed of my internet. It has spoiled me!
- The upload capability of my ResNet connection was absolutely below
par. My cable modem at home can achieve a better upload rate (around
40 kB/s),
versus the shoddy 15 kB/s I experienced in my dorm room this year.
I do not overuse my upload capabilities, yet it seems my upstream was
being
throttled. This is not fair, and not what I expect from the University
network. A typical upload would stall periodically, yielding a horrible
average speed and lag spikes when hosting a temporary game server.
This should be fixed.
- more prizes
- I do not see how you would tie in a cell phone service for websurfing.
Keep them off our lines to save bandwidth.
- I think that our ResNet is very well organized and I appreciate the
hard work that goes into it. I think that wireless internet capabilities
should be largely pursued by the university. I wasn't aware that
this was available and I think it would be very convenient to have.
- I find problems with the computer lab computers. They often do not
run well and will not open some programs. I find this a major problem
sometimes,
especially during hte evenings when there are many people in teh
labs.
- keep up the good work i hope i win a prize!
- Kosik machines network connections need to be sped up. Also the finish
session should destroy all cookies used for webmail. I have tried
to log on to my account several times from Kosik Machines and ended up
inside
someone elses mailbox. Webmail servers/connections also need to be
sped up or upgraded to adequately serve the current demand.
- I love the connection speed and it is very very helpful with my classwork
as well as helpful with keeping in contact with people. The ability
to search places like the library webpage have been very helpful in working
on homework assignments. Not only can I be in contact with people
to
help me from a distance, but I do not have to spend as many hours
in the library searching for information. The kiosks are very helpful
for
checking a menu or important email or quickly finding some needed
class information between classes or when I just don't have time to go
to my
room. The wireless could be expanded more, because many of us who
have the capability to use it would like to be able to use it outside
in grassy
areas like around the dorms and the court of the carolinas to do
homework, rather than the brickyard and classrooms. Thanks for all you
guys put
into it though!
- The services provided are excellent, and the reduction in uploads was
a great idea for illegal file sharing.
- One thing.. i dont know if it was my computer or not, but when i installed
the norton from your dist, the copmuting essentials disc, it didnt
work. It wouldnt update at all. I tried to update it from the website,
but
I dont believe that worked either.
- the default window manager and menus on the sun workstations really
suck.
- great survey
- Everything was good.
- nothing thanks
- Very unhappy that it was a required charge. I dont even own a computer.
- good quality i don't think that any other universities have as nice
of a computing program as NC States
- i really liked it.
- It'
- I did have the free Norton Anti virus protection last semester. I got
a virus that wiped out alomost my entire computer. I uninstalled
it and got McAfee.
- i am happy with resnet at state, everything i wanted to say i said
above
- none to make
- Add an option to number 28: "No, I knew it was available but don't
use Windows or a Macintosh" It would be nice if the survey told
you what questions your skipped intead of just telling you that you
skipped one.
- Let's admit it kids, this upload speeds cap is ridiculous. If Hitler
were alive today he would be out somewhere capping upload speeds.
- I lived on campus 2 years ago and I had an Ethernet card then for when
i lived in Bragaw. When I moved in to Avent Ferry this year, I needed
to buy a different adapter because my old one wasn't compatible anymore.
- Before I came to college, I never heard of ResNet. It is one of the
biggest, if not the biggest reasons why I continue to stay on campus.
The lightning fast computer connections (depending on computer speed)
is a must in this get-it-done-as-quickly-as-possible society. When
you want to get information, you don't want to wait for dial-up to connect.
Continue to do that good work.
- Sometimes in Lee, but not often, we will have problems with accessing
the internet. It seems like either our whole suite is out or just
our floor. Any reason why for that?
- i really like the speed of ResNet, it has at times been slow, but on
the whole it is a good system.
- I had to use the computer labs a lot this year for SolidWorks. I however,
found it to be a lot of trouble because some machines weren't able
to use the program. An error would come up when the computer started
to
open SolidWorks saying that Microsoft Office couldn't open. There
were quite a few computers in Sullivan that had that problem as well
as a
few in other labs on campus (Mann, Tucker.) You might want to check
out those problems.
- I am very pleased with the service. Help is speedy and informative
and the connection is beneficial to my school and personal life.
- Last year, I really appreciated the speed of my Resnet connection,
it was great. But this year, I have had so many problems with my internet
connection, webmail namely, that I almost feel it was pointless to
have
Resnet. When I called a technician about this, especially since my
roommate was having the same problem, they guy told us a few basic things
like
making sure too many programs aren't running, but even once that
was fixed, I still found myself restarting my computer in hopes that
my internet
would be faster, but this was not always the case.
- The speed is incredible. It is one of the biggest factors for me living
on campus.
- I installed the ethernet card and ResNet my freshman year and now I'm
a junior so some of the questions about who installed it and where
I bought the stuff are starting to fade from my memory. When I come to
school I just plug all of the cords in and it works. I also don't
look
at the CD because it's just not helpful since I've used this system
for so long. I think the keiosk things are funny and I feel ackward using
them. The one time I used them was to check the NCSU homepage during
a snow day to see if classes were cancled or not.
- Resnet is good, but I called them once with a computer question and
they said that they onl deal with internet questions so I never called
again.
- I own a Mac, and when I had questions about connecting it, most of
the help I asked from the school didn't know what to do with it. It was
great
that you guys were available, and one guy even came to my room, but
maybe if you could get to know about the Macs a little, it would help
other
students like me. Thanks!
- I was impressed with the ResNet Service overall, I didn't really like
the cap on outgoing bandwidth because it makes using remote desktop
more difficult. I think even if you limited it to 60-80 kbps or so that
would
be sufficient enough to cut down on the illegal file sharing/serving
while still allowing people to telnet/remote desktop/etc into their
computers on campus.
- ResNet has played a very important role in my success at NCSU. Doing
computer based homework such as webassign wouold not be possible
without ResNet. Thank you so much!!
- I have not had to use it,but ResNet has been very helpful for several
of my friends.
- IMAP Mail was a lot slower and problem persistent this year than last
year. I can report more than five times this year where IMAP mail
was down.
- pick me
- ResNets speed is a huge asset and I feel blessed to have our internet
connection.
- Overall a good job, only problem is webmail at certain times is very
slow.
- I think that you should be able to get a new email adress through NC
State server if your current email address is over run with junk
mail. Also I think that NC state should build in a filter into their
own system
so that the crap emails never even reach a students inbox.
- The computer lab assistants are not always helpful or the friendliest
people from which to get help. In particular I was in the CHASS labs
at the beginning of spring semester to print out an article for class.
The smaller labs computers were having so sort of problem printing,
so after spending 65 minutes there trying to print. I was sent down to
the
main lab, where it took me another 40 minutes to print, because the
lab attendant was in the hall talking to one of his friends. When I finally
got to print, I had selected the option to print more than one page
per
sheet. For some reason this option did not work, and the lab attendant
yelled at me for printing more than I should. He assumed that I had
made a mistake in selecting the option, when I am absolutely sure that
the
option was selected. As a student, it should not take me two hours
of my valuable time to print in a lab, and I do not deserve to be yelled
at by a lab assistant who was not doing his job in the first place.
- Best internet source I've ever used.
- I really feel more comfortable about my computer being attacked with
viruses because of the free anti virus software. I use the "Live
Update" at least once a week to ensure that my computer is protected.
That is a great service.
- Bandwidth is now severely limited. Uploading is way too slow. Takes
forever to send even a document to my brother at unc. Impossible
to host games now, and even play online games due to lag.
- I think the cost of ResNet could be a little cheaper every year.
- My service just stops sometimes, prety often, I don't know if it is
my yellow cord or what. Whatever happens it throughs off my whole
connection and I have to go in and reset it.
- Wireless internet should be added to all dorms.
- it should be more reliable, faster
- I'm ok
- Put the whole campus on the same LAN. Its better for games.
- most of the time the connection is good, but sometimes it can be very
slow.
- Resnet was fast and a lot better than the dial-up networking my parents
use at home. I prefer it and am glad it's available.
- Make known all programs are available to students free of charge (i.e.
Norton AntiVirus). For example, students in engineering pay the computing
fee, and I recently found out from a friend that b/c of this certain
programs are available to us- She downloaded Windows XP (an authorized
copy) through some school website.
- aaron is great!
- As far as I can tell they have done a pretty good job. At the begining
of the year, they had to cut my port on after I told them it was
off.
- Often application launcher in computer labs VERY slow... applications
from the launcher are vital to do the work, and are only available
in labs.
- Give me some money.
- Good job.
- The ability to purchase print quota online!!!!! PLEASE!!!
- I've had a wonderful experience using resnet this year, and it strongly
influences my discision to continue to live on campus.
- have a nice day :)
- this survey sucks because i didn't answer all the questions and it
made me go back and i had to answer all of them again. it should have
remembered
my answers from the first time.
- Thanks for coming by when my roommate and I DID need a little help.
I appreciate it.
- ResNet was good
- ResNet is a wonderful service and is actually one of the biggest motivations
for me to stay on campus.
- I think you guys do a great job, especially at move-in!
- It's a really good connection and in the three years I've been on campus
I havn't had any problems or complaints about ResNet.
- It is overall a very fast and efficient connection.
- I had no clue about the free anti virus
- Resnet guy Keith came and put in a new one. for people who don't know
much about computers, the service appears to be awesome. i'm the
resident IT in the suite and usually end up fixing the comps in the suite.
But
awesome job on trying to make it easy for everyone to understand!!!
- rawr
- Should educate students better about security
- looks good
- It is super!!!
- Should think about spcaing users out over the network in case a server
goes down you can push the overflow into the remaining ports on other
servers.
- ResNet has been very reliable this year...thanks
- Res Net is cut way too slow. We should be able to transfer files, (not
everyone uses it to transfer bootlegged software etc...) Sometimes
parts of projects, films being made here, or other things need to be
sent...
and 1 KB/sec doesn't cut it for the money we pay!
- Wireless in the study lounges of dorms, and throughout the entire library
would be a good idea.
- The Windows machines would be a lot more desirable to use if they were
faster and did not have so much running on them at once.
- The network is one of the reasons I decided to attend over a university
that used cable internet.
- Add ResNet to the cost of the room. Quit saying the room costs x amount
of dollars plus you are required to sign up for ResNet. It looks
better if the room costs y amount of dollars with ResNet included. Or,
just
give people the option of not getting ResNet (or let them just get
the phone). Not everyone has a computer, not everyone needs there own
computer
with all of the availble labs. Its not fair for these people to have
to buy ResNets services and not use them..
- Better anti-P2P support but don't let it get in the way with other
things. A lot of people like to setup servers for websites, games, etc
that are
LEGAL but get handicapped from P2P software. I know that ResNet tried
helping this by capping upload speeds but this also hurts other things.
OR...somehow get student population to disable all P2P uploads.
- no junk mail should be recieved from anyone, like surveys, travel agents,
etc....I recieve stuff that I stongly feel that "you " all
sale our addresses to. Webmail is for professors, colleagues, and parents
to send mail to us not some "spring break special" company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- I think that an education program should be set up to teach students
how to conserve bandwidth. Student should be taught how to use file
sharing programs in such a way as to reduce network congestion. File
sharing
programs should not be blocked.
- I hate Linux and Macintosh. Get rid of them. All of them.
- Over-all the people who answer questions and help students with their
computers have been friendly and knowledgeable. Thank you!
- I like resnet service. The email server change-over wasn't too much
of an inconvenience, and the only problems I had were due to times
when the network was down which therefore caused the internet to fail
to work.
The "friend" who installed my ethernet and setup resnet for
me is extremely good with computers and linux. This is why the "friend" had
so many references in the questions. Without my friend, I would have
probably consulted the IT help desk.
- you should make powerpoint available for download.
- really like the speed of internet connection
- i really enjoyed being connected to the internet at all times...it
helped me out a lot...except for pop-ups!! a program to get rid of that
would
help
- The bandwidth caps that have been instated are incredibly limiting
and prevent efficient usability of the networks if you have to transfer
something
off campus.
- the anti virus software was hard to find. Have you seen the way computer
games pop up when you put the disk in? where they give you items
to click on in a window, and u pick the one you want? (check out warcraft3/starcraft
in particular). it would help if Norton Anti-Virus was in a good
easy
to find location, or at least big red letters. I had a hard time
finding it on the disk, and had to do fancy computer people things to
get it.
- I really liked ResNet, except for sometimes my Webmail didnt work
- There were several periods over the year where all resnet activity
stopped. I could not make any transmissions. It hampered my ability to
do work
and this should be prevented.
- I'd like to see a large format printer available for a charge.
- THIS IS TOO MANY QUESTIONS IT SHOULD BE ABOUT 10 MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS
TO GET ACCURATE RESULTS
- everything's great
- Wireless should be available in Dorms.
- resnet is a great addition to the dorms here at ncsu
- Yes, the fall semester, my upload speed was that of around 400kb. Then
The beginning of Spring, it was at a piss poor 20kb (and sometimes
it would've died). 80 bucks a semester for a crap upload is absurd and
should
be immediatedly fixed as this is the only and severe issue i had
with resnet.
- i have nothing to add
- Resnet is good as it is.
- ResNet is great! :O)
- Res Net was very helpful in my academic success this year.
- Other than being kicked off of the internet many times over the course
of the year, i found no problems with the Resnet service
- Great service to the students
- none!
- I think it is ridiculous how the residents of Avent Ferry have to remove
the hubs this year, just because they will not be needed next year.
We did not install the hubs in the first place, so why should we have
to
remove them? And then you are going to charge the student if they
are not returned to the RA, please, it should not be our responsibility.
It sounds like someone does not want to do their job - what they
get
paid for.
- Promote Mozilla over Netscape, they use the same code, but Mozilla
is a few versions ahead, and it doesn't have advertising crap built in,
also Mozilla Mail is better than Eudora in almost every way that
I have
yet seen, and it is also completely free.
- Can't think of any
- one thing i found annoying was when i would go to print (in the computer
lab) a lot of the times the printers were down or jammed. oh and
how come a lot of other universities have free printing and we have to
pay
for ours.
- I have enjoyed living in the dorm this year because of the Internet
service because it is great...I will miss it next year!
- I like that one can apply for a custom hostname.
- all in all very fast and well connected
- Many bandwidth issues the school faces could be greatly alleviated
by creating a campus-wide sharing system. Such sharing is possible and
used
frequently through Windows' own sharing protocols, but a searchable
peer-to-peer network for only computers connected to the school LAN would
cut down
significantly on bandwidth currently being used for worldwide P2P
applications, such as kazaa.
- GOOD JOB!!
- I like it
- Worked good. Thanks.
- I called upon ResNet to help fix a problem I had with my internet connection,
and what they told me to do didn't fix anything, although they were
very helpful. The problem fixed itself after a few days
- I liked it a lot.
- ResNet is efficient and reliable, and priced very competitively compared
to cable / DSL services off-campus. I hope that this will remain
the case. Were the service to increase dramatically in price (to more
than
approx. $110 / semester), it would not be fair to continue the practice
of mandating ResNet for all residents. On the subject of peer-to-peer
file sharing (P2P): The University has a responsibility to its students
to allow free and fair use of the campus network, which includes
the legal application of services such as Kazaa, Morpheus, Audiogalaxy,
etc.
I encourage the IT staff of NCSU to support their student customers
and take a hard line against the legal scare tactics used by the Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA) and other groups fighting
copyright
violations. According to current laws, many of the files accessed
via P2P services are illegally shared
- I have been realtivley pleased with resnet this year, it was reliable
and for the most part fast.
- I wish that there was a MY_NCSU page that each student could login
to, and from that page, it would show each student what courses they
had
with their prfessor's homepage right beside of the class. Also, WebAssign,
WebCT, and WolfWare, Submit would have links on that front page of
the MY_NCSU. This would stop the one hundred sign-ins that each student
has
to do just to go anywhere they need to go. It is not helpful, but
annoying. Also, this would be very helpful to students, and therefore,
students
would be more efficient. Take a survey, I know this would help. It
would not be that difficult to do. Many colleges that do not have the
quality
of computer experts as does NC State have something like this and
I think it is time that State upgrades to a student-friendly computer
environment.
- I thought that the connection was unbelievable, and for that reason
I do not want to go home....
- I have one kind of anti-virus, but it expired. I wasn't aware there
was one avaible through State, that information should be more widely
publisized.
- Overall great service
- use a mac is not a viable option to solve computing problems.
- I liked that staff from IT/computing service help desk. They were very
prompt and friendly.
- I love the fast connection. it's great!
- ResNet is a beautiful thing
- ResNet kicks.
- The main reason I would rather use Macs in the computer labs is because
the Novell login on the PC's is ridiculous. Isn't there away I could
avaoid having to log in until I need to print or access my unity
file space. The Novell login just takes forver and constantly has errors.
Seems like there could be abetter way, like the MacLeland login on
the
Macs.
- You guys do a bang up job. Your service and up time are phenomenal.
Keep it up!
- I found it quite convenient that I could get computer help. My problems
were always solved after calling the help number.
- I am generally very satisfied with the ITDs work, ResNet, the campus
technology resources, and appreciate the work that goes into providing
them
- i liked it! never really had problems with it!
- I'm really glad that Norton AntiVirus is available now for free to
students. I installed it to my laptop here at school and my parents'
computer at
home, which I use a lot when I go home.
- I like using ResNet because it's very fast.
- Students need a mini-class about ResNet and all it can do and how to
do it.
- keep our internet access unrestricted (dont limit downloads or anything
else), and continue to keep it the fastest around. Keep up the good
work!!
- Thank you for providing such a darn fast internet connection. But webmail
is very slow. And maybe you ought to provide information about setting
up a firewall on your computer.
- checking webmail is very slow
- resnet is really efficient. it works well with what i have to do.
- they do good.
- I like the idea of adding an extra data port to the rooms here at Avent
Ferry to do away with the hubs. I hope you were planning ahead and
are installing Cat-6 cable instead of Cat-5 to ease the future upgrade
processes.
I know you will eventually want to offer students something other
than 10 Mbit connections to their rooms. See you next year.
- I think it would be advantageous to students if all labs on campus
would contain the same software. I find it annoying to have to go to
the COM
lab in order to use VB 6.0 or Peachtree. I found it inconvenient,
especially on weekends when the COM lab's hours did not fit well with
my schedule.
- Windows XP doesn't seem to like the SMB network or I just can't get
it to reconize that it's there.
- overall, great
- I didn't need any assistance in the spring semester, but today(May
20, 2003) when I needed some help with Resnet...the staff was EXTREMELY
helpful!
Non Computer Owners
- could be a little cheaper....
- I didn't like it when it went down.
- I feel that my computer in my room is a distraction. I don't mind walking
to the Riddick (chemical engineering) computer lab to do work. However,
it was a little better when I lived in Bagwell, and I could just
walk downstairs to use the computer. I really hate the fact that
they are
changing Bagwell (and eventually the entire Quad) to be for Scholar
students (Honors/Scholars "village" or whatever it's gonna be called).
It's a shame that the majority of people that cannot afford a computer
in their room have to walk across campus to a lab, while other richer
students who have such luxuries have the opportunity to walk downstairs
to use any computer any time they wish. Oh well. I know that without
knowing how to use a computer I would be lost in all of my classes except
PE. I also wish that their was more opportunity for students to take
out loans to buy a computer like they do at Chapel Hill, but I guess
we could never be like the Tar Heels. Thanks for your time.
- thank you for having computer labs around campus
- I think this was a
very good survey. There are some technological things I am not familiar
with. But, having a computer lab at my
dorm has been very helpful and useful for me.
- I have had a lot
of trouble with the Wolfcall system of loging in. I understand that
it still is being tested, however, 90% of the time,
it does not work for me, so I try to aviod it at all costs.
If it is installed in every computer next year, it requires more perfection
none
- It takes forever to sign on to the Windows computers, is there
anyway to make it go faster?? It would help me save time if it took
only a minute instead of 5.
- Computers in Computer labs take entirely
too long to load up
- I am very pleased with ResNet and what it offers.
- I feel that students
living on campus who are not able to afford a computer should not have
to pay for ResNet in the residence halls unless
they get a computer and use the internet later. They
used to not automatically charge every student and it is unfair to
persons without computers
to pay for internet service in their rooms when they
do not have the ability to connect to ResNet in their rooms.

Why
have you not brought a computer with you to campus this semester?
If you don't own one, why have you chosen not to purchase one?
If you have a computer with you, why have you chosen not to connect it to ResNet? |
- I don't own a computer because I don't have money.
- Money is the my main problem.
- more convenient to do it through the campus conncetion
- I did not buy one...because mostly the computers on campus serve my
needs.
- I used my roomates computer all semester which was connected to resnet
- I am in the process of getting one. I filled out a computer loan application.
I recieved the loan recently, so I will have a computer for the fall.
- Because I could just use the school's. Because the school provides
them and my roommate had one.
- I don't own a computer. I can't afford a computer, I'm here on financial
aid. Again, I don't have a computer.
- The computer labs in Brooks and Leazar Halls meet my computer/technology
needs.
- Right now I can't afford to buy one.
- I own a home in Fayetteville and that is where my computer is. I stay
on campus half of the week and stay at home for the other half. I
decided to leave it at home because I can use campus
computers when I am staying on campus.
- I do not have the money to buy one right now and do not really need
one because of the convenience of the labs.
- I don't have a computer b/c I currently I lack the funds to buy a computer.
- My computer (DELL) broke. The labs are an effective way of using resnet
services.
- I don't have money for one
- too poor
- I don't have computer because they are very expensive and if I did,
I would not feel comfortable with bringing it to school with me.
- I did not own one until April of this year. By the time I got it and
had a way to bring it here, it was not worth the effort to haul it
up to my dorm for 3 weeks of use.
- I do not own a computer because I cannot yet afford one.
- Didn't purchase one for this school year. But I will have my own personal
computer in the Fall.
- I only use a computer to check mail and type papers every now and then-the
cost of buying one is not worth it. Also I like the extra desk space.
- I have not brouht a computer with me to school because I can not afford
one.
- I do not currently own a computer because I can't afford one.
- I was given a laptop, but it is too slow. I have had a computer in
my room one semester, but it was just too much of a distraction to have
it there. I don't really have the money to buy a
computer now so the easiest thing for me to do is to walk to Williams,
Tucker, or Riddick computer lab to use those facilities.
- I stay more off campus and chose to keep my computer there.
- I didn't purchase a computer because my roomate had one.
- I do not have enough money to buy a computer.
- i can not afford too
- I have not brought a campus with me semester simply because I do not
have the money to purchase one. If I had the money I would definitely
buy and bring a computer due to the fact that i pay for
resnet regardless.
- My parents never bought me a computer and I can not afford to purchase
one on my own.
- I'm broke as it is with such high tuition.
- Because the computer labs are ok
- I do not have enough money for my own computer at this point in time.
- I haven't brought a computer because I cannot afford one.
- too much money
- I am an international exchange student and it seems like too much of
a hassle to buy a computer here, as I have no fixed residence for
the summer and I would not know what to do with it.
- Bagwell has a lab so i didnt want to spend 1200 dollars
- becuase i wanted the most up-to-date computer for next semester when
it is required for design school
- I have a computer. It is broken. There is no way for me to connect
it to ResNet.
- IT is too expensive to purchase one at the moment.
- At this time I can not afford a TV.
- I don't own a computer because I was in architecture and they told
us not to buy a new computer until our junior year. Also my parents couldn't
afford one and tuition at the beginning of the year.
- Its a waste of time, I do all my work on campus computer lab computers
- i have one i just have not chosed to connect it to resnet because my
computer is not fast enough to be able to work right, and i dont
have that card in my computer that you are supposed to have.
I don't own one because I can't afford one.
- Because it has not been something I deemed necessary in order to graduate
and I have managed through the campus and friends to have one at
my dispense when needed- the expense has also been a major setback.
- i am in the college of design and they recommend that you do not buy
your computer until your sophomore year.
- I cannot afford one.
- I feel that the computer software available on computer in unity labs
allow me to do my work without the need to buy my own. I am trying
to save money as long as I can I want to wait until I absolutely need
a
computer.
- I plan on buying one in the summer, I'm real picky and I've finally
found the right one.
- I am from Peru, and does not make any sense to bring a computer from
there. I am also waiting for the last semester before graduating
to buy my own one and take it back to Peru.
