- The Linux and especially the Mac machines have a very good software selection. Kudos. The Windows machines do not. Clients for MySQL, VNC, scp, and ssh would be nice, as would some programming language interpreters/compilers/IDEs (particularly Perl, Python, and Java, but go crazy). Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird for web browsing and mail and FileZilla for FTP are also good choices. All of this stuff is free. Oh, and the Novell crap sucks, but I guess you're stuck with that. The Suns are pretty much worthless as workstations with better Unices around; any chance in rolling out a bearable desktop environment? Question:
Do you have any comments about the use (or lack of use) of classroom technology in your courses this year or in general?
Answers (278 valid results)
- I am a visual learner. I learn to associate certain colors with course material. It would help me if college professors would incorporate technology in their lectures so that I associate colors and/or pictures with material as I learn instead of when I go back and study.
- My professors were proficent in using the technology, although the technology did not always cooperate with the professor.
- I agree with the lack of technology used in most of my classes. Some were good as added visuals, but most were not needed.
- should be used more
- using technology in the classroom rarely helps students learn the material.
- The math and physics classes need to use technology more in the classroom, especially in PY208 and MA242 where the material is very difficult to visualize and thus extremly easy for a bad instructor to make unclear.
- I don't care much for classes that use netmeeting to broadcast to other schools - they always took 15+ minutes each day for setup and technical problems.
- well in scale up, our teacher is a joke cause all he does is use webassign to teach
- sometimes the want to use technology hinders the classroom experience
- No, just use it if it actually helps a student do better in the course.
- never learned how to use maple! more computers in classrooms would be helpful.
- it is good
- Should all be upgraded
- my computer science class in withers 218 wasn't very integrated. i guess the projector didn't work or something cause we all had to watch clips just on a regular tv at the front of the class. not very impressive esp for a CSC class. you should fix that.
- The use of technology was adequate.
- I like the computer presentations using LCD projectors, I wish more professors used them.
- I think that the use of technology is almost becoming a necessity to keep students interested/well informed in classes. Technology (such as the use of power point) makes things much more legible and accurate because teachers have the opportunity to go over their work ahead of time. I wish that more teachers had used technology. Also, some of those who desired to use it did not have proper training in it or know about all of the possibilities available to them.
- teachers think powerpoint presentations take the place of actually teaching... they read directly off of it, very annoying
- some of the programs never worked like excell and some of the lab tops never worked...was a huge problem the entirer semester....harrolson classroom
- i think it was appropriate
- Technology should be used as a tool not a crutch. Make sure kids know how to use things like Maple but also be sure to teach them how to do stuff by hand. Some better explainations for Maple coding would be beneficial as well; I was ALWAYS lost in Maple lab.
- I think all classes should be required to use some form of technology resourcing.
- In general, I would like to see a more widespread use of technology in the classroom.
- FLS208 taught by Lioret has no business wasting space in the laundry building. This professor fails completely in adequate use of the facilities. This class (from my experience with this professor) could EASILY meet in a regular classroom. There is little or no effort to enhance education through the technology available.
- In my computer classes like E115 and CSC 112 the technology helped, but in things like my physics lab it was just anoying and made for a boring and unuseful lab.
- More teacher should use the technology in the classroom. Not just in the labs.
- The classroom experience was especially useful in my Eng 101 course because she showed us how to do lobo's so that we could do them at our home computers.
- no not really
- hardly any of my teachers used it, though they could have
- Java should have more hands on instruction.
- no not really
- i was amazed at how much this school uses technology in the classrooms
- I think the classroom technology is great, and needs to be continued, however I find that powerpoint is being abused (used too much, to the point that it is not a good learning technique anymore).
- There has been alot more technology used in my college classes than in my high school classes.
- The use is awesome, they use it where needed, and leave it where it is not needed.
- most of the teacher has websites, but only a few accually use them for assignments.
- More technology usage! Please!
- I thought it was very helpful to use technology in the classroom. When we actually worked on computers, I was able to learn a lot while following along with the professor.
- Powerpoint is very popular, as is the overhead projection of computer screens in some classes. overall, very helpful.
- math courses need to incorporate more classroom technology
- The teacher in my PS 371 class didn't seem very adept at using the digital overhead projector. Also he tended to be incompetent at sending class emails or attaching files without somehow corrupting them.
- I think the use of technology has been very beneficial
- use of ppt slides to present advanced coding material (ECE 406 and courses like it) is very difficult to follow unless each slide is described in detail. Many times what happens is the instructor will throw up a slide with many lines of code and it is tough to process everything. I feel like my programming courses that the instructor used the board to write code line by line works better for learning.
- Most teachers use a computer to project power point presentations. This is one of the best ways of learning for me.
- - not many of my teachers even know how to use technology.
- sometimes its pointless. and alot of the times they didn't work right
- Would like to see more Audio/Video facilities in some classrooms (Kamphofener is one), had many projectors but could not play audio for a video project
- the use of technology was only helpful when i was being taught how to use it, as in a computing or programming class. in other classes, things like powerpoint made it harder to learn.
- I think that computer/technology use is well used.
- I think the technology helps learning by enhancing the professor's ability to display material and create more in class participation.
- Good
- i noticed that notes posted by powerpoint helps students learn and professors teach easier
- Somtimes technology can be overly used in the classroom and there isnt enough student/professor contact
- Some professors may tend to overuse powerpoint in their lectures, but for the most part technology is well used.
- We had to use MATLAB for my MAE 315 and ST 370 class. I thought my ST 370 professor explained MATLAB very well but the use of MATLAB in MAE 315 was very difficult. I think there should be some type of tutoring with programs like Maple and MATLAB.
- The majority of my teacher do not utilize technologies enough to supplement the course materials. Especially in foreign languages where technology would be helpful, my professors have not used much technology - especially in higher level language courses.
- the lack of tehcnology really was very evindent in the CHASS fields. profs were very unwilling, it my be becuase of lack education in technology.
- not at this time.
- It is good - it helps make things easier
- A fair number of my professors use instructional technology in no way.
- Park Shops 117 computer labs are great for classwork. The new CPUs are awesome with XP and everything new.
- Computer tests turned out to be easy to use.
- Sometimes it helps explain things, but only if the instructor can use it well along with the lecture, if they can't then it doesn't help at all.
- I find that the use of technology in classes generally enhances my ability to learn, largely due to the variety of teaching and learning styles it caters to.
- If and instructor uses only one type of technology and uses it all the time, it becomes rather monotonous and tiresome.
- Online lecture notes are very helpful.
- Glad to see more professors using technology these days.
- more wirelss access
- Not used in a lot, but I don't think it really needed to be used that much.
- the use of technology in the classroom was very effective
- proffesors need to be taught how to use them
- I don't like some forms of "classroom technology. (ie. powerpoint presentation) When a teacher makes a presentation and uses it for the next 20 years to teach a class, I feel like the teacher is not coming through to the students. I abhor these classes.
- they should use more
- Yes
- i believe its a good idea to be available to use classroom technology.
- sometimes when the powerpoint doesn't work, the prof. has no backup plan and lecture is cancelled- this is annoying because it relies too much on technology
- I wish all profs would use technology! It helps me learn a lot better
- Professors' use of the technology was very helpful. Especially when they would put the notes on the internet.
- some times it is overused leading to more distance between the students and teachers and less interaction. it also makes it easier for students to not feel like they need to go to class.
- Powerpoints are boring and should be replaced somehow.
- I have always had a problem connect the laptop to the overhead projector.
- I really liked professors using Power Point presentations as it made it easier for me to get the notes (I'm hearing impaired).
- I think we should increase use of technology in classes. Most college level students have a good understanding of technology or at least should.
- I believe that the technology in the classroom is very good for the courses that I had this semester. Some problems did occur but it was not anything that could not have been fixed quickly.
- make sure teachers for laptop sections understand how the laptops work and how to use them to their fullest potential
- In my philosophy class, the entire course was taught over webct. I liked it because it gave instant grading and the questions were multiple choice.
- I think professors should only use technology if it's going to help in teaching and learning the material; not just b/c it's easier on them.
- It's been good.
- Sometimes it is easier to take notes off a projected screen that has color and effects, however it doesn't hinder you from learning.
- I think its fine. My english teacher wasn't as computer savvy as she could have been, but it wasn't a big deal at all. The class still ran smoothly and we got everything done.
- I'm tired of overhead projectors Teachers should be officially taught how to use the smartboards.
- not enough computers in withers
- This year, it generally made sense not to use classroom technology in the courses I took. As long as the teacher is able to teach the material understandably, and the course is not based around technology, there is no need for teachers to be forced to use technology. If the course is technology based, it would be nice for the teacher to use the necessary technology when teaching.
- The use of technology was very helpful especially in the large classes; lectures were very easy to follow by having a visual aid.
- they could use more
- Sometimes it can help, sometimes it can hurt. It's all how the instructor uses the technology
- I love it when the teacher uses slides. I then don't have to take notes and I can give my teacher my full attention and brain power.
- teachers overuse power point
- English classes SHOULD NOT be required to have students go online to find assignments or syllabi. It is simply more work for the student to remember to go look at these sites. If a student should happen to forget to check it and an assignment is due, they bear the consequences. Teachers should AT LEAST tell students of these online assignments.
- it helps the students read the notes better b/c some professors have bad handwriting.
- i believe that in classroom technology should not be mandatory and there should be less of it.
- The equipment in G111 in Caldwell either needs help or better instructions of how to operate it.
- projector in harrelson 201 hurts my eyes
- Most used the technology when it was applicable for the class.
- its stupid
- Wireless internet is great! My professors were able to lecture using powerpoint or web-linked outlines that illustrated course material very well.
- Really appreciated the increasing implementation and use of technology in all of the classrooms I use.
- Maple should have its own class for freshman so they learn how to use it.
- Use of technology in the classroom greatly improves my understanding in that class, especially if I can access the same information from my room at a later time.
- The use of technolgy helped with visuals, and the efficiency of the lectures.
- sometimes getting them to work/turn on took too much time in class
- Some teachers rely too much on powerpoint and it can be distracting.
- Dr. Ayoub didn't use a course locker and instead used Yahoo Briefcase. The night before the test someone deleted all the files out of the Yahoo Briefcase. I don't know if this is your problem or Dr. Ayoub's problem (I'd tend to say Dr. Ayoub is just lazy), but I thought it was worth mentioning.
- Technology was used, but the bare minimal was done with it...it was not used to its full potential in order to enhance learning. When the bare minimal is used with the technology, it's just "there" and then it becomes more of a hinderance or distraction rather than a "learning tool."
- should have more
- I took ST445 this semester and the prof only took us to the SICL lab once a week, I feel that despite the disadvantages he saw (namely the distractions available) I would have learned a great deal more about SAS if we'd used the SICL lab every day.
- Made the class more interesting.
- I think it is a good trend, classes like Java and other computer-oriented classes should be taught in a lab.
- Math classes required maple, which is stupid and useless.
- teachers need to understand that everyone might not be able to operate the technology at a fast speed. Teachers need to take the time to teach the software first.
- the whole e-click thing in my chemistry class was pretty stupid, it wasn't worth the time or money
- It works for some classes, but not for all
- I like being able to access class websites and class notes from my dorm room.
- Webassign sucks.
- not used enough
- When overheads are used instead of projection, the material is on available during the class time. If the material was presented on a projection, it would be readily available to all students.
- I really liked that I could do my math homework online first semester and when I was not able to do it on the internet the second semester, my grades suffered.
- The available technology is a powerfull tool for us to learn and understand the lessons better.
- Classroom technology is especially good for those students who need visual aids. With this advantage, it is easier to comprehend the material.
- The use of classroom technology made learning fun and easier to retain.
- Sometimes professors will put too much emphasis on powerpoint presentations than on actual teaching and explanation.
- maple is worthless...
- I think the teachers who know how to take advantage of technology do a really good job. Others seem to be more ludites when it comes to integrating old with new.
- I enjoyed technology in the classroom.
- Some professors of sciences, although knowledgable in their subject area, do not have much of an idea of how to correctly use the classroom technology since most of it is new.
- Most of it was just projections
- it has helped me greatly, because the information provided in class was also available for me to access online in my own room
- I feel that the teachers that used technology here, did a very good job of balancing the use of classroom technology with education. In high school, I felt that most teachers embraced technology at the expense of actually teaching the class.
- it was a good balance
- well i took a computer based class (architectural representation) which helped me learn how to use certain graphic programs
- It was always very helpful, especially to have power point available, easier to see and take notes. I wish all classrooms had it!
- it helps me visualize things better.
- I enjoy technology being used in the classes.
- Addressed mostly to the CSC department, in particular 467 -- don't expect people to jump right in to unfamiliar software and produce professional-quality material
- I liked when professors encouraged us to e-mail them final papers, etc. It was very convienent to me.
- none this year.
- It's good to have the digital projectors. Allows professors to write notes/draw, etc. for a large audience.
- the use of technology was excellent! there needs to be more of it
- I like it
- I think the ma242 should have computers available
- I hate webassign, it is the devil.
- There should be more lecture halls equipt w/ computers, so as to be used by the students during the lecture.
- It has been great--especially for science courses like zoology.
- Some of my professors still write on blackboards, while others won't lecture if the powerpoint is not working. It can be very inconsistent.
- nah
- good
- Linux blows. So does putty and all that crap you have to go through to remotely access the EOS system.
- the use of technology in classrooms is very helpful to the students because we can take notes better compared to trying to catch everything the professor is saying orally. We can follow with the professor during class.
- I would like to see more technology used in the classroom. Sometimes a chalkboard is not quite enough to convey some abstract concepts.
- its nice
- over heads need to be replaced by power point full time!
- The student response remotes are a good idea to illicit response from the entire class.
- I would only like the professor to use the computer if he/she is showing us how to use software we need for the class. Otherwise a chalkboard or whiteboard is fine.
- i taught me a lot
- more need to use tv's and projectors.
- It is nice when professors have power points of the lectures avaialbe however the classes are not very informative if all they do is read from the screen.
- In my communications class the projector often goes into sleep mode, and the professors need to know how to make it begin working again. The vcr was broken the entire semester in my history class. In some of the extremly large classes the projection screens need to be larger, and microphones need to be used.
- i think some computers areoverpowered for what they are used for(tompkins dual p4), while some are underpowered and sluggish at best (unity at harrelson ground)
- better sound systems in Nelson 3400
- Technology use in coursework is great, however calculus webassigns seem out of place.
- add zip disks to the desktops
- wireless is nice
- einstruction in ch 221 was useless.
- I feel as though the grad students should be required to know how to FULLY operate the equipment, not all of them do.
- classroom technology is a great aid in lecturing. having notes available on an overhead or powerpoint are very helpful.
- i liked it.
- it was a good amount
- we need more computer machines
- I think it could be useful to inform faculty of the various resources available from an internet-based standpoint. Meaning WebCT and Wolfware and things of that nature.
- The technology is great! Keep up the good work!
- Maple was not helpful
- I like it and it helps me out a lot especially webassign.
- Scale-Up Physics didn't work for me.
- technology, especially powerpoint presentations helps both teacher and students stay focused and organized. also is a great method to follow when taking notes.
- none at this time.
- Encourage more faculty to use it.
- happy with the amount of use
- I don't believe it is a good thing to become progessively more reliant upon technology as a teaching tool in the classroom. The teachers are becoming more alienated and distant due to powerpoint and prepared slides. There are rarely examples done by hand, and when asked a question teachers simply direct your question the slides thereby never really taking it upon themselves to DO THEIR JOBS.
- more wireless areas!!!
- im in the laptop pilot program
- very useful
- The use of lecture notes online for CSC 116 (Java) is completely ludicris... It has no bearing on the class and the class should be taught in a lab...
- more professors need webpages with course outlines/syllabi and also they should depend more on e-mail as a form of communication. it's not always convenient to come to office hours.
- some teachers didn't know how to use macs
- I think it was a good idea and more classes should use it.
- I hate maple! Their is no instruction given by human beings on how to do it (my TA was worthless). Also e-click is totally useless and wastes class time.
- The SOC program was a great idea.
- No, I dont because they arent required in all of my classes.
- It was a good thing.
- the use of maple for calc. was very difficult. i placed into ma241 and never had a maple lab. my teacher assumed we all new how and when i approached him for help he wasn't able to help me. the help in maple was very confusing as well
- I really like to take online tests in my organic chemistry class.
- Having the internet in my PS 301 class was great because we could look at political websites as we talked about the topic. My PSY 376 instuctor liked Powerpoint a little too much. Too easy to put a lot on one screen and then fly by it. Difficult to take notes from powerpoint.
- sometimes teachers' use of technology could be better
- In the classes that I have taken, the technology use has been appropriate and beneficial to learning.
- Using the projectors to demonstrate vPython programs in Physics 208 was helpful so we could see how particles behaved under certain circumstances. The PRS system was also helpful in understanding the course material for PY208. Some of the professors in other classes had trouble operating the projectors and wasted class time trying to work the equipment.
- It always helps to be able to see things on the projector screen rather than seeing problems on the chalkboard.
- The maple assignments were so different from the curriculum being mainly ahead of what's been taught that they were more of a hindrance and burden than practice/clarifying learning
- i like how a lot of classes are web based
- Great experience!!
- The computers in the Biology labs are horrible. They are extremeley fragile will shut down for no apparent reason.
- I LOVE technology! The more, the better. It all helps so much more in learning (of course, I am a visual learner).
- The use of classroom technology is a wonderful way to enhance the learning experience. I remember more information when I not only hear it, but see it.
- I think the addition of technology in the classroom is a good indication of where the university stands on technology. It also helps immensly with learning.
- Often times it seems that the technology has been forced into the material, even if it could be presented just as easily without. It seems some classes lacked a really good use for it
- professors should use a variety/ take advantage of muliple technologies to teach
- It is helpful with allowing us to understand things.
- No not really the only complaint I have is teachers and advisors not being able to use the internet to their advantage. I know some of my friends have teachers that dont check their email or dont know how and the same with advisors.
- Webassign tests. course notes via powerpoint
- I would like to see more use of powerpoint
- More classes should take advantage of the computer resources available here
- I like when teachers use slides so I don't have to spend my time writing notes, I can actually take time to listen to what the teacher has to say...when they have something interesting to tell me.
- Webassign and Maple sucks.
- The teachers should use it during lecture.
- Alot of the larger classes used technologies like projectors and powerpoint. Sometimes that makes it easier to follow the material.
- i think it helps us out a lot because we are actually doing some one on one interaction and i think it helps us learn the material a lot better
- some of it was unneeded
- It would be beneficial if less technological classrooms such as those in less renovated buildings such as Harrelson had portable technology (computer projectors on carts for example) at the professors' disposal.
- I just don't like PowerPoint Professors.
- i don't like being required to use certain computer programs in my classes
- e115 wouldve been easier if the TA had an overhead projection of the comp screen.
- No complaints
- I'd like them to use more documentry movies, to give a vivid background of the material.
- It is hard when teachers use overhear powerpoint because they are harder to follow and its harder to take notes and pay attention
- professors should all try to incorporate some form of technology in each class. it makes it more interesting
- The use of power point is very helpful in the classrooms as it makes learning to me alot easier when you can see the material on the screen and not just hearing it from the teachers mouth. some teachers arnt as good in using the technology but at least they try.
- they are helpful and keep students focused and involved
- It seems the lecturers don't use the resources to their full extent.
- Availability of Internet in classrooms was very beneficial for examples and online notes.
- The only technology that I saw in classes was a projector to show PowerPoint presentations. Other than that my classes just used the board, which is all they really needed to use.
- I think it's a great supplement to any class, but it should be applied and used in a way that makes it helpful and effective.
- The classes that needed technology (like powerpoint or other things) used it, otherwise my professor didn't need to use it because of demonstrations.
- The microphones and big screens in the front of the room help everyone to see and hear.
- Teachers right stuff on chalk boards still . . . What classroom technology?
- Why do Education majors and Mathematics majors have to take E115 and JAVA or Fortran?
- low on use this year, easier to get work done where i want to do it and not infront of a computer
- it is very helpful in general.. more wireless technology should be available in buildings
- many programs used for creating things for communications classes were never demonstrated or taught in my curriculum, so we basically had to play around with the programs to get them to work
- I like webassign. I know that everyone complains about it, but when I do my homework, it helps me understand what's going on inside the classroom. It also helps me for upcoming quizes, and tests.
- could be used more often
- I's prefer less technology.
- Often the technology is used the wrong way, or ineffectively
- helpful if you missed class
- A lot of fun
- It's great that we have it in the classrooms but we never really have to do projets using tech. so a lot of people don't know how to use it.
- Technology should be used more in classrooms. Class materials presented in a technological way (ex. slide shows or powerpoint) are much better organized and easier to follow. Internet course notes are exceptionally helpful in all classes.
- Some professors try too hard to use technology and it becomes distracting.
- Glenn Lewis is an Alias teacher who doesn't care much at all for his students.
- Teachers should not depend so much on classroom powerpoint presentations
- Not using computers in the classroom is not nessisarily a bad thing. These questions sound strangly familiar to another recently taken survey.
- Some professors hide behind a powerpoint presentation or some other visual presentation system and never go outside their preplanned lectures.
- sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't
- multimedia can help a class, or make it worse. A good system avaliable can help instructors use tech more specifically for the courses needed.
- Often one of my professors would attempt to use classroom technology but because of his lack of training he had trouble adquetly using the technology and this often hindered the class. I suggested having training and support help available so professors know how to use such technology.
- teachers need to learn to use the technology
- I do not understnad why we are forced to learn Linux (when you are an engineer). We should use what we grew up with and what we are most comfortable with, even if it is not Linux.
- In general, instructors should be acquainted with and comfortable using the technology before trying to use it in class.
- slide shows were extremely important
- Generally its just powerpoint presentations
- Excessive use of powerpoint can detract from learning. Taking time to work out problems and actually work through concepts is key.
- I would prefer it if professors would not rely on powerpoint to do their lectures.
- maple is a waste of time in calculus
- It should be used where ever it can be if it will help relate material or give a better understanding of a subject. Visual technology such as projectors and such greatly help my understanding of material.
- I recommend having all of the computers that are used in the classroom to have a windows operating system on there since it is well known. I think most of them do.
- I like it
- it gets to a point where its over used. powerpoints in physics are not necessary when u should be working problems on the board. things like that almost hinder learning. sometimes the good old chalkboard way is better for learning.
- Yeah, it sux because you hardly have time or remember to check the websites consistently. I'd prefer to have a piece of paper in front of you.
- good technology in wachovia executive classrooms in nelson
- more instructors would use computers for lecture if projectors were present in all classrooms.

Question:
Are there any services that Information Technology Division should provide that are not currently provided?
Answers (221 valid results)
- Maybe some firewall software, like they do with the antivirus software. I know tons of people that got hit by trojans this year.
- Firewall software & ad-ware removal software
- Don't know of any off the top of my head.
- none that i can think og
- I don't think so
- idk
- Firewall
- Firewalls
- provide norton utilitieis please.
- more free software!!
- easier downloadable virus protection, firewall help or easy to use firewall
- help for professors making their websites. some people DO NOT know how to make a good layout. ALSO, why in the world do we have at least four ways for professors to post vital information? There's webct, webassign, wolfware, and their own private websites! That's at least four different places i've got to check on a daily basis, and at least four different places i've got to log in at. it would make more sense to combine all the good points of all of the systems into one SUPER system that everyone would be on.
- No, I am please with the services provided.
- I would like to see more wireless coverage on campus.
- moe about there are viruses out there because i have on eright now on my computer
- A firewall porgram option.
- Nope, everything is provided that I have ever needed.
- 24 hour tech support
- Ability to rent hub or router for a semester in order to be able to connect both roomates computers as well as a gaming console to the network.
- I don't know
- Firewalls would also help, if they were provided for free more people would use them
- I would like to see a better/more complete Antivirus rather than simply a client version.
- A firewall
- more wireless access around campus
- I think that the Information Technology Division does a ood job informing the students on the services they provide.
- i think on that computing essentials CD you need to have an adaware program on there as well
- Free educational software for Students on their personal computers, like MAPLE.
- wireless in dorms
- Not that I am aware of.
- Good as is.
- Provide firewalls, maybe even Linux distribution
- The ability to log into the novell applications from a resnet connected computer
- No, you take care of most of the things I would expect you to. Nice job.
- We need a universal spam/spyware blocker, such as SpyBot or something, so everyone is aware of it.
- IT should find a way to configure the network so that p2p transfers going into and out of the university are anonymized. Also, they should expand the effectiveness of the NC State wireless network to the eating places and coffee shops on Hillsborough street, so that the service is better. Also IT should sponsor/establish "official" NC State teams for online gaming competition so that gamers at NCSU can compete against gamers at other schools on an official level.
- free computers w/o tuition increase :-)
- i can't think of any
- It would be nice if the students could have faster access to the most current anti-virus patches.
- More wireless coverage
- i don't see what you offer... everytime i call with a problem i never get any help
- they should fix messed up copmuters
- pop-up blockers, DVD-burning
- more wireless. i'd like wireless in sullivan.
- squirrle mail does not work on my computer (which is brand new) no one has ever emailed me back after i called twice.
- Open a smtp port/server for ncsu students so they can send email via remotely from anywhere. just have authentication on the server, instead of blocking to just resnet-smtp.ncsu.edu (or whatever the current server address is)!
- On the Computing Essentials CD, software for remote access should be provided, such as putty and X-win32.
- none that come to mind
- It would be nice if the wireless network "cloud" were expanded to include more rooms in the dorms.
- Programs in the residence halls talking about troublshooting with different OS and downloading would be nice.
- Quick classes 15min, 30min, 1hr classes to teach basic computin skills.
- no, don'y think so
- noe
- Maybe easier access to our network drive off campus, or on another computer not connected to the network. Or a simpler way of finding out how.
- i don't know if this is IT dept. area, but out school needs more classes on computer software like Flash or web development etc.
- Wireless capability in more areas of campus
- Not to my knowledge.
- more wireless access and the IM name should be online more often
- Probably. Not missing anything in particular though
- Nothing that I need
- not that i know of
- I would love to be able to have PHP capabilities for user home pages.
- Nope, I enjoy the service as it is
- probably, but I can't think of anything
- There are none that I can think of
- cheaper wireless cards for students
- may not be in the appropriate area, but wolfware-wolfsubmit needs a delete function for mistakenly uploaded files
- None I know of.
- naw
- It would be useful to have hardware technicians as well as software technicians. I had a problem with my harddrive and ITD couldn't help me out. Instead I had to wait over a week to get a technician from somewhere else to help me.
- Perhaps a firewall for increased security.
- decent, free pop up blockers that are not ad supported :) :)
- Can't think of any.
- none that I can think of.
- free stuff
- None that I can think of.
- ad-blockers
- Basic fixing of the computer (not inner problems; things like keys or little covers falling off). If this is available, it should be more widely publicized.
- not that I'm aware of the services that have been provided thus far have met my needs
- Hard ware helpers
- A firewall would be excellent. Or at least recommend one of the free ones out there.
- FAX CAPABILITY in dorm rooms! I can send faxes, but I can't receive them. Multifunction machines are extremely common these days, and being able to use all functions would be GREAT!
- No, they do a great job
- Yea, a NEW Symantec CD for those of us who have the 2003 version. I had to renew my subscription and pay $30 for it.
- i would really like to see wireless internet available in the dorms
- can't think of any
- whenever I have needed it, the AOL IM screenname that resnet uses for support has not been online.
- I don't know.
- Firewalls along with Norton Anti-virus
- No, I think that Resnet does an awesome job; I'm very satisfied.
- it is sufficent
- Games licensed to NC state to play -- ex. Warcraft, Starcraft, Halo, Soldier of Fortune
- I would like to see more wireless access in the dining halls, atrium, and dorms.
- I would like to see more wireless internet access areas on campus.
- Perhaps a bug/error fixer.
- not that i know of
- Increased wifi networking
- Symantec doesn't work well but its partner Norton does I think you should provide Norton not Symantec.
- Not sure.
- I'd like to have more technical support 24 hrs. Because one time I needed it, and I called 515-help and the answering machine told me to call the next day in office hours... and I needed the help in that moment.
- Not off the top of my head.
- Norton Firewall.
- I think that at the beginning of every semester there should be an update anti-virus disk for everyone so the problem that we had 2nd semester won't occur again.
- NO they are all there.
- better firewall protection from incoming viruses.
- I'm sure there are, but none that I desperately need now
- Not that I know of
- Since I do not know what they provide and don't provide, perhaps they should just make students more aware of what they offer.
- Occasionally, I would like to telnet into / or have access to a Windows server to use Microsoft Office and other Windows software. StarOffice and Open Office are not fully compatible with some documents that I need to open or write. I have Windows XP, but not much software.
- Not that I know of
- better version of norton anit-virus would be nice. i still don't feel my computer is safe with this free version
- Not sure
- free windows upgrade
- Firewall software
- No, not that I know of.
- easier way to access unity account from home computer
- Regular Computer Repairs for students. Both Laptop and PC repairs and free upgrades for comptuers running older Operating Systems.
- Not that I would use.
- It is good that computers are being scanned on a regular and if severe virus's are found the connection between the computer and the network is severed, but sending an e-mail in this case can be pointless. After having fixed a friends computer, I do believe that a voice mail message should be sent stating the problem instead of an e-mail or in addition to it.
- not that I know of
- can't think of any
- no, they already go above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis
- Stronger usenet support would be prefered, as the server retention is disturbingly low.
- i don't know
- i dont know of any
- fixing hardware
- regular appointments to help you clean up your computer throughout the semester - some of this stuff is tricky if you only know the basics
- pop up blockers and spyware blocking programs
- The ability to check out a data projector somehow would be nice if at all possible, with like deposit system or something. If there already is one, make it more knowledgeable.
- Squirel mail should support asian characters.
- Spam blocking for email!!!
- not sure
- nope...love the downloads for ftp from the website though. any chance you can get an educational license and be allowed to give out copies of windows xp pro /2000 pro, windows 200x servers and sql server for free is there?
- How to build your own computer workshops
- Wireless connections in the residence halls would be nice, or at least the availability of ethernet connections in the study lounges of the residence halls.
- eh
- perhaps a discount to students on computer supplies
- Spybot software
- I'm sure its in the works, but more wireless access points would be great, especially in the higher floors of the library. Also, it would be nice to be able to devote more of my unity account space to email, but I don't know if thats in your jurisdiction.
- Focus on providing wireless to larger portions of campus. I have not bothered to buy a wireless card because I feel that I wouldn't be able to use it often enough on campus. If more or even better all of campus was covered, I would not hesitate to get a wireless card.
- Wireless connection in more of the dorms without a computer lab would be nice..such as BOWEN!!!
- I don't know
- Not that I can think of at the present time.
- help via instant messenger, similar to that of aol help
- Linux virus software.
- free beer
- Wireless Campus
- I'm pleased with the services offered.
- nonne
- None that I can think of
- Personal Firewall
- Not that I can think of probably because I have never needed any other services.
- Instant Message help. A backup DNS, when that goes down it's a bitch.
- personal firewalls
- forum support on www4 webspace
- more wireless access points
- More Wireless access points throughout campus
- McAfee is a better antivirus server. Symantec didn't help me at all. So I had to install something else. Also every student should have Ad-aware. Sure you can download it on the internet, but not many kids know about it. Very useful.
- I can't think of any.
- Make sure people know about spyware and adware, add Adaware and/or Spybot to the Computing Essentials CD.
- I can not think of any additional services.
- Lee Hall network connection should be upgraded. I heard that we are one of the last dorms to have the slower connection.
- Maps around campus of how to get to other computer labs
- I don't know.
- idk
- better antivirus software
- I think they do a great job.
- Ad-Aware
- Spam and/or pop-up blockers, also ad-aware or something similar would be nice.
- good services
- IMAP spam filters for webmail
- Having experience with other schools IT, NC State is by far the best, kudos.
- updated version of nortons, and possible filewall software
- More wireless access - like in residence halls
- Somehow letting students know more about the computer labs and that there are services available. The CD is good for the anti-virus software, but maybe having professors iterate the there is a computer division on campus and that it can really be beneficial.
- More wireless access points....I'd like to see you recruit people from each dorm to help all these retarded peopl take care of viri then set up firewalls and ad-detection programs....
- phone access for questions, better access
- firewall software
- to be able to access network applications on my computer. The programs I use for my major are very expensive and only available on network computers. It would make it a lot easier for me to do my work in my own room than having to drive to campus.
- don't think so
- Computer diagnostics
- Not to my knowledge.
- Send a newsletter through school that gives important updates, such as anti-virus software being free and info about the wireless networking.
- An introduction course to how to use your webspace. It would include how to's regarding html and the other website platforms.
- i think they provide a good amount
- None that I can think of.
- there should be a res-net advisor that comes by every month or something to make sure that everyone is doing okay and has everything taken care of
- Not that i can think of at the moment.
- firewall protection, better virus/trojan protection (despite having supposedly most updated virus definitions)
- I use MS Outlook 2003, and it will absolutely not automatically purge deleted messages, which makes it annoying when I set up junk mail filters because the junk mail won't get deleted. I wish there was a way that I could set up filters for my account on, for instance, Webmail, and those would apply to my incoming email even if I'm using a mail client. Therefore, NCSU does the filtering before it even gets to my machine.
- Software Firewall
- Not really...
- If they provide the cd, then no, just keep giving out the cd
- None that I know of.
- iie...(no)
- updates?
- Keep the Broughton computer labs open 24 hours a day.
- faster upload
- i think they provide everything that is needed
- None that I can think of.
- More firewalls and better protection against viruses, SPAM, and pop-ups.
- I think you guys have everything covered.
- None that I know of.
- Discounts for PDAs and information about what is compatible/easy to use
- I am pretty happy with the services provided, but it would help if there were more hours for the Help Desk. I tried calling there a few times with computer problems, but it was always after hours. I don't think that I am the only student to come across this problem.
- i know it would be expensive, but i think it would be helpful if the programs that were available only in certain labs were also available for students to use and download so that they do not have to stay out late in the labs and can work from the safety of their rooms.
- make it known that you will install anti-virus software for us
- Knowledgeable help desk staff to anwser questions such as in Poe Hall, I have never had a question answered there during the evening hours.
- Residential Hall Wireless Access and Wireless Access in all Lecture Hals
- Linux for non-engineers
- They should help people with all kinds of computer problems. I have had problems where instead of coming to try to help me and really see what the problem is they just passed it off and said I would just need to call gateway. It is just much nicer if they can come b/c lots of us don't know much at all about computers!
- Are they the ones in charge of webmail as well? If they are, they could create a hyperlink that would give us the option to add new contacts' info, such as email address, after we email them (just like Hotmail =-o). Yeah...I don't know exactly what the Information Technology Division is. I could guess, but I am often times wrong. They could probably educate the campus somehow about what they did so people will be more aware. I'm pretty sure they have a link from NCSU's website, however, that is quite an extensive website =-o! I guess they could give us an updated version of the antivirus software...other than that, no, they're doing fine, in my opinion.
- Not that I know of.
- What is "nomad" and why isn't it campus-wide. i'm not nomadic, i'm in my dorm, but i can't get wireless here.
- automatic update service
- none that I know of
- more advertisement of what is available
- wireless access in the dorms and in other key areas around campus that don't already have it. I enjoy wireless where it is provided. Thanks
- not that i could think of
- scanners in labs and color printers would be super helpful
- So far, the services provided are pretty good.
- not that i can think of now
Question:
Feel free to add comments below about ResNet or any of the above questions.
Answers (240 valid results)
- I don't have any other comments. Thanks for the good job that you do.
- Very good service, but everyones Kazaa is slowing my service down. Cut their service off!!!
- its good that you provide the antivirus software the way you do. good job.
- keep up the good work
- Do not have any comments really, keep up the good work.
- Just get Solidworks working in the labs. Specifically the Poe labs.
- best part was the quick connection
- great job!
- I loved not having dialup so much, I'm going to pay for it for my family at home this summer.
- The antivirus from the cd conflicted with what was already on my computer and I couldn't figure out how to get the other one off so I had problems with it most of the year.
- please add wireless connections to the resident halls...or at least in Metcalf!
- res net provides good services
- keep up the good work :)
- hi, the computers in the chemistry tutorial center in the new USTL building are really messed up and keep going offline randomly. it's really annoying. it would be nice if they were fixed so as to not do that, but in a way that would still keep the printing free (for chem stuff). thanks also, the kiosks, why are they so slow and broken down? people think it's a mac thing but i know it's not cause i have a mac that's fine. (if mac knew how weird they act, they wouldn't be happy). i'm almost afraid to login on them cause it might freeze up on me and i'd have to be late for class. They're a GREAT idea and there should def be more of them around, but they need to work consistently! thanks
- I am pleased with the service I have received.
- You definitely realize how much you need it when it goes down. I'm not sure why this happens, but if there is any way to prevent this, that would be great. Not to say that it happens often.
- i think the university should go wireless like chapel hill, so we can freely take our lap tops if we have one to class and to the library with out going to the trouble to check one out since that procedure takes forever, also people work better when they have there own pc with them that they are ue to.
- You guys are wonderful! It's really helpful having people around for move-in to help people get their computers and resnet hooked up!
- the computer kiosks are not very reliable, and sometimes i could not get the computer to function
- good thing to have here.
- Really effective, but there were a couple of server problems that were confusing. Other than that, it was a good program, especially the free Symantec software and Computing Essentials CD!
- The wireless network seems to be difficult to access. I have pre-installed wireless ability, yet I am unanable to connect in places such as the Bragaw Activity Room. The antivirus software provided by NCSU is slow and locks up computers. I, along with many other people, have had to uninstall the program because it interferes with our computing activities to a severe degree.
- should be cheaper
- ResNet has helped me out quite a bit, both my sophomore and especially my freshman year when I was first using my computer on campus.
- No comments, thanks.
- more wireless services...i.e. in the dorms! more reliable wireless service where it is supposedly....i.e. in the library!
- Speed of internet service is great!
- Resnet should be cheaper/included in room and board
- Good job.
- I have no other comments to make other than I have really enjoyed using ResNet services for the past 3 years. Having internet access in my dorm room has really helped me conduct personal and academic business with ease. Keep up the great work ResNet!
- thanks for all the bandwidth
- I have never had any problems with ResNet over the past two years, thank you
- Don't have any :)
- good service
- Resnet is the fastest internet provider I've used.
- NC State Computing is doing a great job. Thanks.
- Make phone calls to people with viruses instead of e-mails. Chances are if they have a virus, they can't check their e-mail, and will have no idea why their connection was shut off.
- Good overall.
- good service and speed... keep it up!
- I had many problems with my computer this year and everytime I called resnet, they either came or talked to me on the phone and the problem was solved promptly everytime, thanks!
- ResNet is pretty good but they shouldn't roll over so easy when the RIAA/MPAA "enforcers" come knocking (like Baystar TSP.) There should be some way college students automatically get file-sharing rights to everything because they are college students and thus have academic needs.
- question 35/36... i'm not a retard, i had Symantec from last years CD :-)
- kiosks have rarely worked well for me. they seem to run extremely slow and sometimes will not load different things. i ususally save time by walking to the nearest computer lab rather than waiting for the kiosk to work. i would use them more if they were more efficient.
- I wish that we had 100mbps switched connections as opposed to 10.
- ResNet is a great system. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have my PC connected to the Internet within my room.
- i have never recieved help from resnet they always tell me that they can't do anything for my problem
- Since it is possible for us to get Windows XP and other such things free off of MSDN alliance, it would be nice to be able to get Office XP for free there too.
- look at #37
- I knew it wasn't Resnets fault but the webmail was down a long time when a lot of students needed it.
- resnet has greatly helped me out with its easy access
- I wasn't sure how to answer some of the questions so I didn't answer them. Then a message informed me that I had to so I'm not sure how accurate some of my answers are.
- My ethernet went out 4-5 times this year and my email went out 2-3 times. I don't konw what was going on this year but i have lived on campus for 4 years and never had this problem....so You all may need to chek either your system or the connections in alexander (although i lived here last year with no problem).
- My campus account is almost completely useless because somehow it got corrupted. I cannot access Microsoft Word or websites that require security certificates.
- in the novell aplication launcher ms office should be included. also in the start menu.
- Didn't install Antivirus because I run linux. :P More linux boxes, please!
- Updated Virus Software...This Symantec version is ok, could be better
- I didn't use the antivirus software because I run Linux.
- Resnet owns
- thanks for all your work this year!
- My only complaint this year is that our outlet in our room malfunctioned frequently and coused us to not be able to access the internet.
- I have greatly appreciated the services and advantages of ResNet this year. It was a nice change from what I was used to.
- I have none.
- I know that viruses going around on the server was a major problem this year. I hope that there is a way that this problem can be fixed because I have your Symantec and Norton on my computer, yet I still got viruses on my computer. This really got on my nerves considering I was not downloading things or anything of that nature and yet my computer was still susceptible to it. I just hope this problem can be fixed by next year, so my computer won't keep acting crazy.
- All in all, great service.
- I was very displeased with the service this semester when the connection was disconnected from my dorm room. Not only did I have to wait for the Help Desk to figure out what had happened, but I was never notified what had happened until I actually looked at the help.ncsu.edu call tracker website--I was never actually notified of the solution.
- I wish that there was more wireless networking available in dorms. I particularly would like to be able to take my laptop down to the lounge on my floor and still be on the internet.
- very helpful
- are campus should be completely wireless
- My experience with the Help Desk this year was mildly troubling. Our room had a simple problem, a Gaobot virus or something like that, and I must have sent 5 e-mails just to get our connection working. We even had to visit the Hillsborough Building just to get any help. In conclusion, my roommate's computer does not function now, at all. This was a result of the software you provided during the visit, which destroyed a critical file for XP operation. He's too lazy to get it fixed, and he probably won't fill out this survey, but I thought you would want to know something like this. The repair cd, by the way, looked like it was made in some guy's basement. Very unprofessional. I didn't even want to put it in my computer. My roommate did, and...paid the piper.
- I dunno if this applies here but the print quota system is a mess. I do a lot of printing from plotters and such from the labs in Brooks. I would be much more convient if the system was online or they at least had a desk for obtaining quota on East campus and at all times.
- No extra comments
- you are providing the students with a great array of opportunities to use computers and such everywhere at any time of the idea, which helps us tremendously!
- Overall I am pleased with the ResNet service
- With my few problems I had a ResNet representative helped me everytime.
- Please expand the wireless Nomad system to cover more areas on campus. I think having a truly wireless campus would not only make the students happy, but elevate NC State's status.
- I was not very satisfied with the anti-virus program offered.
- It's all good.
- The HelpDesk has been fabulous in immediately answering the phone and helping me with the computer problems. The Digital Media Lab has also been a great help.
- I enjoy having ResNet and thanks for keeping it up.
- It makes me sad I'm graduating in 2 weeks and I'm going to lose the speed ResNet offered. RoadRunner can't give me a quarter of the speed your offered. And you offered it at an awesome price. Is there anyway you can run ResNet to my apartment next year ;-)?
- Why does webmail consistantly freeze up (or not work)? Why does Resnet get so slow some times?
- The computing essentials CD, i know it is given in a packet to all freshmen. Could you include it in the required stuff that RAs give out to residences, if you don't already do so?
- You guys do a great job. Thanks for all your hard work.
- Remember that not everyone has a cell phone.
- I thought it was very helpful to have people here to help me when something went wrong with my computer. All my classes had homework online, so I need a computer almost everyday. When something went wrong I could just call them and they helped me solve my problem. I didn't have to go anywhere.
- this was so boring i wanted to kill myself like that kid in syme
- Need better support for linux.
- Good job!
- ResNet and locality are the only things University Housing has going for it. I wish I could get resnet at my apt.
- I love having the quick internet connection. It would be nice to make the ways to connect to ResNet helpers a little less obscure/hard to find.
- I have not had many problems except sometimes I could not get a connection, but generally the problem was fixed in a matter of hours, but sometimes it was at a time when I really needed access to the web, but never caused me to miss any assignments
- Fast, reliable...nice
- I remember that for a full month when our internet was slower than a bitch, Resnet refused to deal with us. After repeatedly calling the son of bitches, they finally got things to work for once. It was annoying as hell because I had to go over to Sullivan computer lab just to do my damn homework when I greatly prefer the environment of my room. I pay for resnet services...I wanna know where in the fuck does that money go?!?
- good job. the email servers were down a few times for quite a long bit of time, and that was extremely difficult to deal with, considering that email is my primary form of communication outside of person-to-person conversation.
- I am so thankful for the ResNet staff. They helped me so much this semester. THANK YOU!
- the anti-virus program you provided is awesome!!!!!
- The anit virus thing was not very helpful b/c i got a virus several times and the virus could over ride symantic
- I had resnet members come to my room on 2 separate occasions. The first time, the guy did something completely different than the instructions I received over the phone from resnet, but it worked great, and he was finished in about 10 minutes. The next time, the girl didn't seem like she knew what she was doing at all. My roomate and I both had a virus (probably the same one) on our computers, and we hadn't really been able to ues them at all. My roomate's computer was fixed, but not by the resnet girl, but by a girl on my hall. And the girl on my hall knew a ton more than the resnet person. My computer got no attention, because by the time they got to it, it had died. It wouldn't turn on or anything, and I had to get a new computer and lost everything I had on my old one. The feelings that I have toward resnet at this time aren't really positive.
- Just continue the wireless network expansion. The current wireless network has convinced me to look into a wireless laptop/pda purchase.
- No problems here.
- They need to make it more obvious how to connect to linux for windows machines...many students I do not believe know they can do this.
- See comment above.
- I don't know if this is your department or what, but the while photocopying issue is a pain. Why are there multiple photocopying systems? Also they need to put a wolfcopy card distrubution thing in the Library. This semester I went to D.H. Hill to copy an article and put money on my student ID. Then I found out that the book was in the Design Library. When I went to the Design Library they only have wolfcopy machines and would not take my student ID. To make matters worse it was a reference book that I couldn't check out, so I had to go to Talley and get a copy card and then go back to the Design Library.
- It was overall great.
- I use the wireless network on a daily basis; I would like to see it in more places around campus including dorms and student buildings/classrooms. Also, I did not use the computing Kiosks around campus because they invariably did not work or were locked up.
- I would like to see more wireless internet access areas on campus.
- I think the ResNet services are adequate for our needs
- I am happy with ResNet
- Overall, reliable service. The network switches in Bragaw went haywire a few times, which caused some confusion. This may already be done, but when help calls are taken, it would be helpful to find out the local network of the caller and see if patterns emerge. I've called in the past with network problems, and am walked through configuration, yet I know I have not changed anything. It's not always user error, and a lot of time is wasted going through configurations that have not been altered.
- nothing really to add
- I'm very pleased with the service.
- I've never had any real problems with ResNet, and the connection speed is great.
- I'm pretty satisfied with ResNet.
- I love the service, it was VERY helpful during the semester, if I was not connected to the internet, I would be lost. But I have a lot of pop-ups and I was wondering if there's anyway to prevent that from happening.
- Service went down too often and for too long once during the semester. My computer is constantly attacked by other people on resnet and on other networks. The only thing stopping many of these trojan viruses is my firewall. The university needs to protect its network users from this kind of attack.
- ResNet was very helpful this year and I hope they continue the good work
- Most of the times that I have called ResNet for help they have been unavailable. Either the phone was busy or I got the voicemail. Even though I was calling during normal business hours.
- I think that overall ya'll do a fantastic job.
- I love ResNet's speed and uptime...it helped my webcreation go so smoothly. I'll miss it dearly while in an apartment next semester.
- ResNet > All.
- The service is excellent! I have internet via cable connection at home through Road Runner, and ResNet is much faster, which is definately helpful in everything i do on my computer.
- Overall, I had one problem and they came and tryed to help even though they couldn't fix it, I knew by then that I did have a serious problem and needed to take it in.
- although i have not used the help lines or resnet people, my residents have, and it has been a great help to them, THANK YOU!
- Resnet is great!
- I was very upset when the system crashed and remained down for a few days early this semester, and on several occasions my "internet connection was lost." I know this has happened to many other students as well. I would like to see something done to prevent these occurrences in the future if that is possible.
- As far as the computing kiosk go, these things are SO SLOW! They need to be rebooted every couple of days. I tried to check my webmail once, and gave up because I waited more than 5 minutes for the browser to load.
- You guys are doing a great job
- i use wireless through the college of design but it is very finicky and the connection is lost every few days or becomes really slow
- It's very helpful to get antivirus for free.
- The upload cap is really hindering, I think limiting it to 5kb/s is to low, something to the effect of 10kb/s would be reasonable. Gaming systems like X-Box Live! crash ALL THE TIME on me due to the slow upload limit. Maybe you can release the speed connection to certain IP address range (like you do for systems on the NC college network).
- Do something about the viruses/junkmail/email outtages. Otherwise, keep up the good work
- I'm curious to know when do you all select a winner, if a winner is choosen....
- I do not feel that all students should pay for resnet service in their rooms since some students don't have personal computers.
- they all work very very hard and should get a raise. :-D
- the computer labs always fill up and the unity lab at the library needs more regular computers. Noon eknows how to use those sun ones. Further, Resnet is completly useless and you have to hunt them down to get help when there is a problem. Finally, simply turning off someones Internet is in no way helpful when they have a virus. Perhaps we should get a phonecall with instructions on what to do.
- you should give away more free stuff.
- did you guys cap the bandwidth out of the campus to say... Road Runner? I dont seem to be able to upload as fast as i could before to my home...
- thank you resnet
- I still got a good number of viruses this year, and I had the anitvirus software installed and I do NOT illegally download, that was pretty disappointing.
- I think that Resnet offers great computing opportunities
- I would like to see better virus awareness promoted around campus, especially on the ResNet site. It should have a warning page of the latest virus and how to remove, etc.
- Registration sucks ass and needs to be fixed right away.
- I love the fast internet connection.
- the guys who come out to help you were very prompt and very professional - thanks for all your help, no doubt i'll be calling on you in the fall!
- The security of Resnet could be better. I got seemingly more viruses and trojans thatn I do at home. However, lab computers don't seem to have this problem. Also, lab printers seems to break down a lot, or run out of paper.
- norton antivirus definitions say they have expired for mac osx version?
- Offer instructions on how to get putty.
- Being able to schedule a conference room on campus would be great.
- I get sooooo much spam in my unity account. Between breast enlargement and penis enlargement emails, it almost makes me want to not use my email. I know of so many people who would love a spam filter on the unity email accounts.
- tee hee.
- I would really like to see more wireless internet around campus. That is a very helpful service.
- keep up the good work
- you should give every student a laptop for free :)
- i think the internet service is great...it only went down once all yr long and is extremely fast. the only think i have problems with is the webmail... its not very reliable and its a very important to me as a pilot student
- I think that the computing capabilities provided are great, but it is a pain when they go down and do not function properly.
- eh..
- I'm a huge fan of the c-name registration, please keep that around
- fast, could be faster...
- Good job!
- The kiosks have not worked for me in over a year.
- resnet has been great. you hire awesome people who i've been most impressed with as they lovingly helped my poor computer-illiterate self through my first year of college.
- #include stdio.h #include iostream.h int main() { cout<<"Thanks for your support!"; return 0; }
- The computer labs are convient and accessible. I find them very helpful, and have had few problems throughout the year with any of the computers.
- Wireless Campus
- Good job.
- I have no comments or questions. Resnet has been beneficial for me.
- I have no comments
- symantec software screwed up on me and wouldnt download sufficiently off the computing essentials CD
- It is still bullshit that you peopel couldn't figure out why I couldn't access my webmail account through Internet Explorer...I was forced to switch over to Mozilla...I like open systems and all, but it's still a crying shame.
- ResNet is great
- good job
- ResNet has been very helpful this year. My laptop's hard drive died and when it was fixed and formatted they immediately provided me with the virus protection software as well as security patches that would be beneficial.
- Sorry about the BitTorrent bandwidth.
- ResNet technicians should be more available so that my friends don't have to bother me to get ME to fix their computer all the time.
- very very helpful and patient!
- I have no comments.
- I enjoy the speed of ResNet and the settings available here at NC State.
- Better antivirus software plz.
- I have just heard about how long it takes for Resnet to come when needed and I think that their services should be faster when needed.
- I think it was really bothersome that greek court residents had to re-sign up for resnet at the change of the semester. No one even informed us that we had to do this, so everyone in my house was without internet for a couple days until finally someone on the help-line told us that is was because we had to set up our service again. A fore-warning for termenation of services would be much appreciated!
- The Symantic is great but you should have a page that comes up after downloading that tells you some stuff you can do with it. I had it a month before I figured out I could tell it to automatically check my comp every day at a set time.
- I am very satisfied with the ResNet service.
- Thanks ResNet
- Thanks for having knowledgeable staff, some other schools (UNC namely) I've dealt with many cases for friends that were very simple and just baffled their IT staff because anyone who raised their hand got the job? Anyway, I've never had a problem here with anyone being under-informed or incompetent, thanks for the great service.
- ResNet is fast, but the computer labs need new computers. not new windows computers, but new sun computers.
- The one technician that did come to my room was not helpful at all. When he came and looked at my room mate's computer all that he did was tell her that her computer was okay, when it still is not. He kinda creeped me out too.
- yay resnet! it's easy and that what a lot of us need.
- I commend the ResNet technicians for their help throughout the year. They were knowledgable and eager to help me.
- deffinately a well-configured firewall software program would help with some of the worms and virus threats. Preferably one that was not too intrusive.
- ResNet is convenient and helpful.
- Linux boxes would be greatly appreciated in ITD's labs, especially the labs in Res Halls - Sullivan, Wolf Village...
- Doing a good job, keep up the good work.
- No questions.
- There really needs to be some software or some other viable solution to pop-up ads, can that be done through ResNet? If so, then make it a priority.
- The technicians have been great. I received help a while ago because I was having computer problems, and they fixed it for free! It's the greatest.
- i think resnet is great and it is very helpful and very affordable for us college kids, most of us are poor
- Resnet needs to do better about alerting campus about viruses. When my roommate got a virus on her computer resnet sent her an email that her internet port was shut off. My roommate would have never known about it, if I hadn't gotten the same email and told her. Phone calls should be made when something serious like that happens.
- I got the antivirus software from last year's cd
- sometimes ResNet was slow and a couple of times it wasn't working.
- No thank you. Its been a pleasure.
- make available FTP program, that is user-friendly, to access network drives (Y-drive, etc.) and bring documents etc. to home computer
- Keep up the good work, try to keep webmail a little more stable next year.
- TELL STUDENTS ABOUT AD-AWARE!!!!
- Some questions were irrelevant to ResNet.
- It would be really cool and convienet if there was a place you could bring your computer if you're having trouble. Like, non-resnet trouble.
- Regarding the service at Tucker lab. The people at the desk are not responsible for operating the computers, therefore, after 5:00, there is no one to approach if I have a problem. There should be one person in the lab that I could advise with regarding any question that I have instead the current situation where I need to call someone without havind instant feedback from the computer.
- woohoo fast?
- Keep the Broughton computer labs open 24 hours a day. Get better chairs for the first floor computer lab in Broughton.
- faster upload, takes forever to send large pdf's to group members off campus on road runner since they capped our upload.
- Do I still get Resnet if I live off campus...or does rodering an outsid einternet negate the need for it?
- The internet is quick which is great.
- ResNet loans me a laptop for the entire year :) YAY for ResNet!
- The anti-virus software on the web and on the CD would not install properly on my computer. I have a Toshiba laptop that is less than a year old and runs on XP Home.
- I only had a few problems with my computer at the beginning of the year. I called, and I was assisted over the phone. It was very effective. I never had any problems after that. Also, I had a connection problem, and I had a guy come to my room. He was very nice, and helped my roommate and I out. I enjoyed his help that he was offering. THank you!
- great service, I enjoyed it alot
- More wireless areas please!
- I have had a lot of problems this year with having to have my profile reset and such as that. I do not understand why this is happening but it would be nice if that could be avoided/fixed.
- The internet service provided this year has been very good. I had very few problems with the connections. Only sometimes in the librar with the ethernet cable.
- ResNet is good in many ways, however, I believe that they need to make sure that their connection works for everyone. If they don't want to replace the entire hub because one little connection doesn't work, they should fix that one connection. Either that or give the student part of their money back (They already paid for it! You should deliver your serivices!).
- Thanks for doing a great job!
- My computer got a virus and you guys quarantined it and I was really appreciative. I also appreciated the friendly resnet staff member helping me get my computer back online after I cleaned off the virus.
- have a nice day!
- I feel bad for people like myself that had a computer but it stopped working and have to go to a computer lab all the time. I feel at a great disadvantage!
- On the ResNet website it says that if we are having a problem with our computer ResNet will only help us if it has something to do with the internet or a ResNet problem specifically. Of the times that I've had problems with my computer, it hindered me being able to complete my work in a timely fashion. It would have been very helpful if ResNet had been able to help me with computer problems not related with the internet. If it is not possible for ResNet to do so, would it be possible for another computting division to be organized to help students with such problems?
- lower cable bills please
- Question 30 does not offer a selection for students who do not own or use computers in our dorm rooms.
- the COD lab assistants are extremely knowledgable and should be linked up to 515-help because i've had questions for them but being in a dorm computer lab couldn't get their help. 515-help didn't know how to link to transfer trashed
- The one time I called in to Resnet, I had a trojan virus: the guy I talked to was extremely helpful: keep up the good work!!
- Great network, just need 100mps ports in all the rooms.
- The kiosks are not very dependable. Half the time I tried to use them between class they took so long loading that I had to go before the email page even came up. They're a very useful tool for checking email when they work. In fact, I wish there were more of them around campus. Having outdoor kiosks in key locations of high traffic (ie: brick yard, dorm areas) would be very useful for checking email between classes. This would most likely require kiosk stations of 4 or 5 computers to be effective.
- Good job this year on getting away from using hub's and installing 2 resnet connections in each room.
- I can never get any of the kiosks to work.
- Ive been quite pleased with resnet, easy setup, and very reliable, only went down once for a couple hours all year long. quality service.
- I stayed in Bragaw last year on the first floor and my internet would cut off and on every once in a while and so would my roomates. I am not sure why but it never became a big problem but I figured I would let you know
- i preferred the norton antivirus to symantec, it seemed like i didn't get all the viruses i got this year
- While i admit that the version of symantec antivirus corp. that is distributed does a good job of informing you when you get a virus, by my experiences it does nothing to prevent you from getting them. I used it for several months and had to switch to Symantec's Norton 2003 Pro because i kept getting viruses.
- There need to be more Resnet people. It is kind of aggrivating to call and get the answering machine when your term paper is maybe being eaten by a virus. There may be a problem with the online/CD anitvirus (used both) and a virus has compromised it both times.
- u should have wireless access in the resedential computer labs as well. like there is in leazar. esp: sullivan labs. it helps to be able to bring ur laptop down and work online with friends who are working on those computers
- Maybe it's because Avent Ferry's connection is poor, but whenever I played games online I was always the major cause of lag which is weird considering the fact that we're on such a fast connection...
- High priced.
