About Project SAFE
Home > About Project SAFE

Project SAFE’s mission is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental campus climate for any student, faculty, or staff member who may have questions and/or concerns related to gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender issues. By doing such, Project SAFE is striving to promote understanding and support for all members of the NC State University community.

Why Project SAFE?

According to national estimates, 10 percent of the population is gay or lesbian. Using this figure, there are approximately 3700 gay and lesbian members of the NC State University community. This does not include bisexual individuals. Social research has shown that individuals dealing with issues and concerns of sexual orientation are at a much higher risk of suicide and other self-destructive behaviors. This information demonstrates why it is important that the campus climate is one where gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) individuals feel safe.

Project SAFE is looking for individuals who are genuinely concerned for the well being of all members of the campus community, with specific attention to the issues and concerns of the GLBT students, staff, and faculty. Whether it is helping a student address his or her own sexual identity, assisting a colleague who had a son/daughter “come out” to them, or providing information to a student who is living with a GLBT roommate, your support and understanding is critical. It can begin to weaken the social norms of homophobia and help to create an environment at NC State University that develops positive self-identities for GLBT individuals.

Your participation in Project SAFE will contribute to a safer campus and a more receptive and supportive campus climate in regard to homosexuality. We are all members of a homophobic culture and do not know all of the answers; therefore, education is an important component of Project SAFE. As an ally, you would agree to educate yourself about GLBT issues, concerns, and homophobia.
