Glossary of Advanced Analysis (Graphing)

*Note: These are calculator functions and you should have quit the PHYSICS program before trying any of these.

Calculator Buttons

  • GRAPH-
Displays a graph of your data on the screen.

  • TRACE-
Puts the cursor on the graph. Using the arrows allows you to move along the graph and displays the x and y values at the bottom of the screen. Hit CLEAR to cancel this function.

  • ZOOM-
Produces a menu with options for different views of the graph. See menu descriptions below.

  • STAT-
Produces a menu for many different mathematical options for the graph. This is where you can change the appearance of your graph (type of graph, line vs. dots, etc.) See menu descriptions below.

Zoom Menu: (Accessed by hitting the ZOOM button)

  • ZBox-
Allows you to draw a box around a specific site on your graph which it will then zoom in on. (See instructions in Advanced Analysis section of this guide.)

  • Zoom In-
Allows you to place your cursor in an area and the calculator will then zoom in , repeatedly if you so choose, around the area of the graph where the the cursor is located. (See instructions in Advanced Analysis section of this guide.)

  • Zoom Out-
Allows you to place your cursor in an area and the calculator will then zoom out , repeatedly if you so choose, around the area of the graph where the the cursor is located. (See instructions in Advanced Analysis section of this guide.)

  • *Note: While there are other zoom options on this menu, we felt these were the most useful. See your calculator manual for what the other functions will do.

Zoom Memory Menu:
(Accessed by hitting ZOOM and arrowing to the right)
  • ZPrevious-
Allows you to return to the last graph you looked at.

  • ZoomSto-
Allows you to store 1 graph for later recall.

  • ZoomRcl-
Allows you to recall 1 graph that you stored.

  • SetFactors-
Allows you to change how much the calculator will zoom in or zoom out on your graph.

  • Stat Plots Menu:
(Accessed by hitting the STAT PLOT button- hit 2ND and Y= button) To change the appearance of the graph.

    1. A screen like the one shown below will appear. Make sure Plot 1 is On and the other two are Off. (If you are working with more than 1 probe or you have more than one set of data, you may want more than 1 plot on. Please check the calculator manual.) Select Plot 1 and hit ENTER.

    2. A screen like the one shown below will appear.

For each line, use the arrow keys to select different items, then hit ENTER to select what you want on each line. The first line allows you to select Plot 1, Plot 2 or Plot 3. The second line is the On or Off choice. The third line has 3 types of graphs to choose from. The Xlist is where the calculator is looking to find the data for the x axis and the Ylist is where the calculator is looking to find the data for the y axis. The last line is how the data points will appear on your graph. When you have made all your choices, hit GRAPH.
