Communication is
a necessary tool for teachers. The need to remain connected to their
colleagues for the purpose of exchanging resources and to create a strong
support network with parents and students are the primary reasons for
communication.
But communication
with other teachers, parents and students has always been problematic
for teachers. Teaching is historically known as an "isolating"
profession without the luxury of time during the normal workday to meet
and exchange ideas with other professionals, contact parents or have
meaningful interactions with students on an individual level.
With the advent
of the computerized, virtual connection this isolation and lack of a
support network should become a thing of the past.
These skill development
activities will introduce you to just a few of the ways that this necessary
communication can be accomplished electronically, over the web and by
synchronous and asynchronous means.
Synchronous communication
consists of communication which takes place in real time without a delay
in the exchange of information or resources. In contrast, asynchronous
communication is intermittent, where a time delay between the sending
and receiving of data occurs.
The skill development
activities which are listed on the sidebar, are separated into asynchronous
and synchronous activities. Determine which type will best suit your
needs and find out how you can begin using electronic communication
to increase your connection to other teachers, students and parents.
