Instant messaging
is another type of electronic communication that is inexpensive and
relatively easy to use. It differs from e-mail in that it is synchronous
or real-time communication versus asynchronous or delayed communication.
They are several different vendors which provide instant messaging type
software. They include:
ICQ ("I Seek
You") has free downloadable software which allows you to see whose
online at any given time and communicate with them. After downloading
the software, ICQ allows you to chat-voice and text-and send messages
and files.
Yahoo Messenger
provides a similar service as ICQ. This free downloadable software
will allow you to see whose online, send messages and files. It
also will, if you use Yahoo Mail, alert you to new e-mail messages
that have come in while you are chatting with your friends.
Probably
the most popular instant messaging service is America Online's
Instant Messenger. It has similar features to the two previous
software packages, but provides novelties to help increase the
interest. For example, the newest version of AOL's Instant Messenger
has a "Stock Alert" feature and newly enhanced image
and file attachment capabilities.
