To send a file, click on the menu at the top of the page entitled, "People" and select "Send File to Buddy" or "Send Folder to Buddy."

You can also send a file or a folder to your buddy by dragging and dropping the folder or file on your buddy's screen name in the Buddy List window.

Your buddy must first respond to accept the file or folder transfer. Your buddy can accept or cancel your file transfer. Your buddy can also send you a warning which will slow the rate at which you can send messages and files or folders.

To get a file from a buddy, follow the same directions as above, but click on "Get File From Buddy."

If you don't want to send files to your buddy, you can share files. Your buddy can access files directly from your computer.

You do not have to worry about your buddies seeing other files on your computer because they can only access files and folders which are in a directory that you specify as a shared folder.

You can also control who has access to your folders by allowing only certain buddies to have access.

Click on "Edit" and then "Preferences." The following box will open up. You can set the preferences to include who has access to the folders or files and what folders or files will be shared.

You can also control the transfer of files, the incoming files and set the preferences for checking incoming files for viruses. Click on "Edit" and then "Preferences." The following box will open up. You can set the preferences on all incoming files or folders.

Note: If you do not have virus software on your computer, AOL's Instant Messenging suggests that you block all incoming files and folders until you have added a software package to your computer system.

Image files can be sent in the same way as text files. They may be sent individually or as a collection in a folder.

Click on "People" and then "Start IM Image Connection." This feature allows you to send movies, graphics and sound files.

There is not a size limit on the graphic or sound files which can be sent using AOL's Instant Messenging.

A box will open that asks, "Start an IM Image connection with:"

Add a buddy's name who is online and then click "OK."

AOL's Instant Messenging has a default setting for the transfer of image files to your computer. Once you accept an "IM Image Invitation," an icon is placed in your IM window. When you double-click on it, it opens up. If these default settings do not meet your needs, go to the "Edit" menu and click on "Preferences" once again. In the "Category" list, click on "IM" then change the settings under "Incoming IM Images" to reflect your individual needs.
