To begin using AOL's Instant Messenger, first download the software which is available from http://www.aol.com/aim/aim40.html. After downloading the program, you will be asked to restart your computer before using the program. Bookmark this page so that you can return to it and continue the setup procedure.

This tutorial is for version 4.1.1068 of AOL Instant Messenger for the Macintosh. If you are not sure which version you have, click on the apple at the top left hand side of the screen and choose "About AOL instant Messenger (SM)."

After downloading the software, you will need to register and choose a screen name and a password before you can send and receive instant messages.
Now you are ready to sign on. Enter your screen name and password. If you want to have your password remembered, then click on the padlock icon.

If you want to automatically sign on each time you launch your computer, check the sign on at launch box.

You are now ready to begin sending and receiving instant messages. Just click on

"Sign On. "

 

Once you sign on, go to the "Help Menu" at the top of the screen.

 

Then choose "New User Wizard."

 

This section will guide you through the basic steps necessary to set up Instant Messenger.

 

 

This window will open up which will give you three options.

Choose "Quick Overview" to help you to understand how Instant Messenger works.

At the end of the "Quick Overview" section, you will be prompted to create a profile.

A screen like this will appear:

You may choose not to complete this profile if you do not want to be contacted by people you do not know. If you do not do this and decide later on that you want to, just go back to the "Help" menu at the top of the screen at a time when you are signed on, choose "New User Wizard" then choose the second option,"Create Profile," from the list of three choices.

The last option of the three is to "Add/Find Buddy." This option allows you to add a buddy to your buddy list or find a buddy whose screen name you are unsure of or do not know. If you are unsure of your buddies screen name, click on "Find Buddy" which will lead you on a search.
