Learning the WWW

Use this list of links to learn more about publishing on the Web. Take notes as you browse, and write down locations of pages you would like to visit again. Remember you can use the Back button or Go in the menu bar to get back to pages you've left.

`Web basics`	`The story of the World Wide Web from the World Wide Web Consortium. HTML for Beginners by Fred Dekker and Donald St. John is a helpful set of materials from cnet's Builder.com. Internet resources page from the NC Department of Public Instruction.` `Help on creating Web pages and links to resources from Yahoo!Geocities. (Find out about having your own free homepage and email!)`
`Html programming`	`Web markup language (html) from NCSU Computing Center. Netscape page on page-writing tips. The HTML 3.2 Reference Specification has a list of all the codes and tags for html as recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium.` `Webmonkey from HotWired offers tips and tutorials for web developers (choose Authoring).`
`Using colors`	`Excellent page that lets you practice color combinations for pages from Sam Choukri. Learn more about the use of color from InfiNet. Look up the exact numbers used for each possible color on this handy RGB color chart.` `Colors for the web are given in two formats at Lynda Weinman's website.`
`Graphics: buttons, bars, backgrounds`	Backgrounds for pages available from Netscape. Do not go here unless you have lots of memory!! From Yahoo, lots of icons, rulers, buttons, and other graphics to use on Web pages. A library of graphics from The Shockzone by Chris Stephens. Up-to-date images from science fields at science cool image. A large listing of free clip art from Barry's Clip Art. Information about Animagic GIF animator for Windows. The GIF Animation Website has links to GIF animators for different platforms. Lycos provides a special search engine for finding pictures and sounds. Image-O-Rama is a site with over 4500 categorized images. A+ Art has over 600 animated gifs and other images. `Jelane's Free Web Graphics`
`Media players and plug-ins`	`Information on plug-ins from Netscape. Links to browser software tools from MediaCast.` `Common Internet file formats and links to download software from Internet Literacy.`
`Searching skills`	`Signal Detection Analysis of WWW Search Engines determines which search engines supply the greatest number of relevant links. How to Cite Information From the Internet and the World Wide Web gives the reference format for the American Psychological Association (APA).` `Critical Evaluation Surveys from Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators gives guides for students to use and useful links on evaluating web sites.`
`Copyright issues`	`Copyright and Fair Use Issues from the NC State Libraries' Scholarly Communication Center. The Copyright Website provides real-life examples of copyright issues, from Benedict O'Mahoney.` `The US Copyright Office at the Library of Congress has many information links.`
`More interesting places to jump to`	`The Elements of Style by William Strunk, a classic work on English composition. How Users Read on the Web has information to consider when writing web pages.
