  • Link educators to scientists, community, state and federal partners

Important to the positive outcome of the project is the cooperative nature of the many different people and agencies who comprise the partnership. The Center for Earth Observation at NCSU provides the computers, computer programs, graduate students, and GIS expertise. The Office of Environmental Education NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources, with their requirements for state certification are an important impetus for educators. A member of their staff is codirector of this project. NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCCGIA) provides North Carolina data sets.

Educators from many different backgrounds will learn how to incorporate current and accurate GIS hazardous waste information into their curricula. The topic of environmental justice surrounding hazardous waste topics is well known, and educators are aware of the implications. These educators will become models for other educators and continue to grow in their knowledge of this topic through the GIS Hazardous Waste website. The web site will provide current and accurate data, teacher developed project-based curriculum, GIS support, resources, and links to the community, as well as to state and federal agencies. Other educators and students will be able to learn about hazardous waste and GIS, as they gain ideas, understanding, and knowledge about these topics.
