Activity 1: GIS Projects in Schools
Read about the projects that other teachers and students are doing with GIS.

Article 1: MidTech Article by Rita Hagevik & Ann Thompson
Read about technology projects at Ligon GT Middle School
that include an elective called Satellites, Computers, and Mapping. In this elective students use spatial modeling to explore the environment using GIS.

Article 2: Meridian Articles

Introducing Geography and Technology into Science Via Biodiversity by Josephy Kerski
Learn about this high school project that uses GIS to integrate geography into biology curriculum as well as other science areas

GIS as a Tool in Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies:
Student, Teacher, and Community Perspectives

This article describes an application of GIS technology as a tool in an environmental community service project in which students and adult community members participated in water quality monitoring and biological assessment.

Activity 2: Research GIS LIVE Sessions
Read GIS LIVE project descriptions. Do research on Web. Learn about the topic and how GIS is being used. Formulate some problem questions: such as How do police use GIS to stop crime? Make a list of possible questions for the presenters on November 20th!

Activity 3: GIS LIVE in Your Neighborhood
Students preview project descriptions and brainstorm how they think GIS is LIVE in their neighborhood. Compare and contrast the project descriptions for GIS LIVE to what is being done in your own community. What did you find? What suggestions can you make?
