Pre- Activities

Level 3:

GIS Veteran Looking for a New Challenge-- How can I design real-world projects using GIS?

Activity 1: Exploring GIS Project Possibilities
Find out what other GIS real-world projects are being done in other schools. Make a list of how they compare to your school's GIS project or how you could get started on your own community project.

Bunches of projects that are happening -- who is doing them and where.

Activity 2: Using Mental Mapping with GIS
Create a causal concept map of your GIS school project or another school's' GIS project (see above). You can use Inspiration available in many schools or a free product available such as CMap (Concept Map Software). Read more about Causal Mapping in "Mapping Student Minds" by Ariel Owen, Learning and Leading with Technology, v29, n7, p. 6-9.

Activity 3: Find Out Where the Best Places Are to Get Real -World GIS Data
Environmental data links can be found on the NCDENR Department of Environmental Education. GIS data and online mapping links can be found at the NCSU library.

Activity 4: Participate in the GIS LIVE Team Challenge
Accept the GIS LIVE Team Challenge. Go to the MOSS Project Web site to learn about how to do the outdoor field experiment. Report your results in the morning of November 20th by e-mailing your spreadsheets to Cris Crisman or Rita Hagevik. All data from the team projects will be displayed online and available for analysis.
