Description:
The Bennett's Millpond Project is a new collaborative program for aquatic environmental
learning partnering The Science House, the Albemarle Learning Center, Chowan
County, and NC State University. This program will focus on studying
the environment of an unusual and historic space, the colonial-era Bennett's
Millpond near Edenton, NC. The Millpond and the surrounding area are
considered a coastal swamp and have not previously been studied. Research
and data collected will include water quality (chemical, physical, and biological),
hydrology of the area, meteorology, and aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna.
4-H students and their leaders used GPS to investigate the historic Native American
settlements near Edenton, NC . Join teachers and students as they present how they
have used GIS to learn about their environment.
Preparing for the Session: Activities for Parents and Educators to engage in:
(K) What do you KNOW about this already?
How can GIS be used to investigate important environmental problem questions?
(W) What have you LEARNED?
What have the teachers and students found out about the
Millpond and their community using GIS?
(L) What else would you LIKE TO KNOW?
How could you use GIS and GPS and what could you do to investigate
the environment where you live?
