Job Description: Works with Veterinary School Faculty and Staff to develop illustrations for journal articles,  textbooks, Educational CDs, brochures, videos and slides.
Software Used: Brenda has used many different software packages including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere, Fractal Design Painter, Macromedia Director, QuarkXpress, and Specular Infini-D.
Education: Undergraduate:  Brenda majored in Biology but also took many art courses and the only course her school offered in Scientific Visualization.  After graduation she studied art and Medical Illustration at Colorado State for a year before going on to a Master's program.

Graduate: Master's program in Medical Illustration at the University of Illinois at Chicago.  Although she found her Biology background useful, many of the other students had been art majors as undergraduates.  Her courses in graduate school included anatomy, embryology, art and computer technology. 

Career Path: Brenda came to the veterinary school on a 3 month internship at the end of her Master's degree program and was then hired into a permanent job.  Now she is a Medical Illustrator II  and Graphics Coordinator for the Department.

Frequently, a younger illustrator will begin with a lower yearly salary or hourly rate if they are freelancing. But, if they are part of a department or company, the amount charged for an illustration depends on the kind of illustration not the experience level of the illustrator. 

Hourly rates: institutional prices by type of work produced (these are lower since the departments are partially subsidized by a company or school)

Graphic Design: $36 per hour
Computer/ Web page:  $40 per hour

Recent Projects: Illustrations for a book chapter on corneal surgery, video on respiratory problems in dogs, an interactive/animated radiology teaching program 
Opportunities: There are many specialties in the fields of  medical illustration and graphics.  One growing area is in the medical/legal field producing illustrations for courtroom use. Another growing area is in pharmaceuticals producing information and advertising materials.

Sample work:
 
This is  the cover illustration for a brochure on hip replacement surgery for dogs.  Dogs sometimes need need hip replacements for the same reason that humans do.  They may have arthritic changes or congenital deformity of the joint. This illustration  was created for Dr. David DeYoung at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital. It shows clients what will happen to their dog if they choose to have this surgery.
