‘Technician’ announces grant recipient

The Technician announced that one sophomore will be the recipient of the $1,000/year grant beginning in the fall of 2008. Lauren Blakely will be a sophomore at N.C. State where she is majoring in Textile Technology. She will be the Technician design co-editor. "When I see my designs in the display boxes around campus, I am amazed to see what I have put together with the help of teamwork from my fellow staff members." Blakely graduated from the Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, Center for Accelerated Learning and Technology.

Lauren students join the other previous recipients, Susannah Brinkley, Luis Zapata, Saja Hindi and Helen Dear. The Technician grant is funded solely through the use of advertising monies. No state funds or student fees support the grants.

WKNC receives Indies Arts Award

Steve Salevan, local music director for WKNC 88.1 FM, was honored as one of six recipients of The Independent Weekly’s annual Indies Arts Award. According to the July 16 edition of The Independent Weekly, “All of our honorees devote a significant portion of their energies—and their mission—to bringing the arts to our community.”

On the air as “DJ Stevo,” Salevan has served as WKNC’s local music director since 2005. After earning his degree in computer engineering in May, Salevan was accepted into graduate school at N.C. State.

“It's my firm belief that we reside in one of the finest music scenes in the world here in the Triangle, and, as such, it is a tremendous honor to win this award,” said Salevan. “I'm grateful to all of the artists who have treated me so kindly over the last three years and to all of the people who have helped me to learn more about the music and culture of our local area.”

Producing leaders for the state, nation and world

CLICK HERE for the 2007-2008 annual report

Our student staff members produced more than 155 editions of the Technician and 22 (of the 23 planned) editions of the Nubian Message , kept a 25,000-watt radio station on the air 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, produced a spring delivery yearbook and a literary and arts magazine. The skills needed to maintain this $800,000 operation help produce leaders in print, online and on-air media. The skills they learn in managing people, budgets and customers will help them in any profession and will help them be educated consumers of the mass media as well.

Specifically, the creation of a Corrections Policy this year is an example of how the students are taking a leadership role not only from within their own media and on campus, but within the greater media community. The creation of this one-page policy involved consultation with a wide variety of media outlets, print, online and broadcast as well as numerous other college media outlets. While other college media outlets have corrections policies, and this was a first for the NCSU Student Media, this one takes into consideration online updates and, as such, is a contemporary policy. Staff members, particularly for the Technician , this year, have been conscious of the need to produce corrections/clarifications in a timely fashion, including working with the reporter who published the story with the potential error, contacting the sources involved, discussing the situation with the senior staff members involved and taking whatever actions are necessary.

Led by a newly reformed Board of Directors, the NCSU Student Media received much national acclaim this year for the yearbook and the literary magazine specifically. As one of the Board members said toward the end of the year, as high-quality as these publications are, now we need to find ways to get them in the hands of more students.

Publicity Planning Packet online

Getting the word out about campus activities is no easy task. At N.C. State, it means letting some 29,000 students know what programs are out there with dozens of programs going on every week. This guide gives project organizers information on everything from advertising to table tents, including a project planning checklist. CLICK HERE for full text. CLICK HERE for PDF version.
