Composition of the Student Media Board of Directors
August 2006

PURPOSE

The Student Media Board of Directors is designed to serve as a visionary group for the Student Media at large, knowing that the content and day-to-day operating decisions are left to the leaders that the Board hires. Because the needs of the Student Media change from time to time, and the personnel available and willing to serve on the Board change, the specific individuals on the Board and their background may change.

POLICY

Members of the Student Media Board of Directors shall be:
A. Students
  1. Three student body representatives elected at-large in a student body election. Neither elected nor appointed student voting members shall not
    • be employees (paid or volunteer) of any of the NCSU Student Media
    • be elected or appointed members of the Student Government executive, legislative or judicial branches so as to avoid inherent conflicts of interest
    • be elected or appointed to the following campus-wide governance or advisory groups so as to avoid inherent conflicts of interest: Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), African-American Student Advisory Council, Inter Residence Council (IRC)
  2. Two students appointed by the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at least one of which shall be minoring in journalism, majoring in communication media or majoring in public relations;
  3. One student appointed by the dean of the College of Management.
  4. Each media editor or general manager hired by the Board of Directors (ex-officio, non-voting)
  5. The president of the Student Body (ex-officio, non-voting)
B. Non-students
  1. Three professional journalists including a mix of radio personnel, advertising, business, writers, reporters, photographers and editors selected by the coordinator of student media and the leaders of the various student media on resource needs (one-year term)
  2. One faculty representative from the Department of Communications (Public Relations, Communications Media) or Department of English (Journalism) selected by the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (two-year term)
  3. One faculty representative from the College of Design selected by the dean of the College of Design (two-year term)
  4. The senior-most professional employee of the Student Media (ex-officio, non-voting)
