Grades and Full-time Status Policy

APPROVED January 2003
AMENDED September 2006
PROPOSED October 2008

PURPOSE

The Student Media at North Carolina State University realize that the people putting out the publications and broadcasting are students first and dedicated to the media second. Grades are an important indicator of future success. And while there will be time when the media will, out of necessity, take priority, maintaining a full course load and an at least average GPA are important.

POLICY

1. Minimum Grade Point Average

  • All entry-level student employees (including, but not limited to, reporter, photographer, designer, DJ, sales staff member) of the Student Media shall maintain at least a 2.00 cumulative grade point average.
  • A student who does not maintain the minimum grade point average shall be dismissed from staff until the grade point average is brought back up to a 2.00.
  • Students in any non-entry-level position (including, but not limited to, section editors, WKNC board of directors members, managing editors and editors) shall maintain a 2.50 grade point average, both cumulative and semester.
  • Such leaders who do not maintain the minimum grade point average shall, with the media adviser, develop a one-semester work plan to bring the grade point average back up to a 2.50. If after one semester, either the cumulative grade point average is not a 2.50 or that semester's grade point average is not a 2.50, the student shall be dismissed from his or her non-entry level position until the grade point average is brought back up to a 2.50. If at any point, a student leader's GPA falls below 2.00, he or she shall be dismissed from staff.
  • At the time of their candidacy or appointment to a higher office or at any point in the semester, the media adviser may check a student's grades to ensure compliance.

2. Full-time status

All regular student employees of the Student Media shall be full-time students at N.C. State University unless in their final semester of study.

3. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

To ensure compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, no student shall be made aware of another student's grades or shall have access to that student's academic record without express written permission. As part of their employment record with the student media, students will be requested to sign a waiver allowing the appropriate editors and student media board members to be made aware when a student is "not in compliance with the minimum grade point average or full-time status requirements."
