Professional Staff

The professional staff serve to advise the media on all aspects of publications production, everything from how to avoid writing in passive voice to choosing the correct headline font to developing a training program for new disc jockeys. Staff members also coordinate all aspects of payroll and technology in the office with a budget of approximately $1 million.

Patrick Neal, director of student media advising

Patrick came to N.C. State in December 2011 from Clemson University, where he served as the associate director of Student Media. Neal taught journalism courses at Clemson before moving into the Student Media position in 2005 and has nine years experience at newspapers in Georgia and North Carolina. His undergraduate and master’s degrees are from University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Email pcneal@ncsu.edu.

Jamie Lynn Gilbert, assistant coordinator of student media advising

Jamie Lynn is the assistant coordinator, placing her in charge of student radio station WKNC. Before beginning her role at WKNC in May 2006 she spent nine years behind the microphone in public and commercial radio, earning two Broadcast Excellence Awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for her work at CMU Public Radio. In 2011, College Media Association named Jamie Lynn an Honor Roll 4-Year Broadcast Adviser. She was one of only seven advisers honored that year and one of only 13 broadcast advisers ever to be recognized by CMA. Krystal Baker, business and marketing coordinator

Krystal, a former student staff member in the business office, now manages accounts receivable including collections and invoices. Krystal was the recipient 2006 University’s Awards for Excellence. She oversees the training of the student business staff, including display and classified advertising, and distribution of the newspapers. Krystal is also the first point of contact for getting or returning a key. Email krystal_pittman@ncsu.edu.

Martha Collins, administrative and annual publications coordinator

Martha is usually the first person visitors meet within the Student Media. She manages the front office including all payroll and human resource functions for the 150 or so student employees within the Student Media. She also manages accounts payable and all ordering of supplies. Martha advises the NCSU Chapter of the Society for Collegiate Journalists was named SCJ adviser of the year in 2010. Douglas Flowers, technology support analyst

Doug is the newest member of the Student Media professional staff, joining the ranks in March 2012. His bachelors and masters degrees are from East Carolina University, where he spent five years providing IT support to the College of Human Ecology. Email deflower@ncsu.edu.

VACANT, production assistant

The Student Media production assistant works primarily with Technician and Nubian Message during production nights and coordinates staff training. This position is expected to remain vacant throught the 2013-2014 academic year.
