inducts five new members

MISSION

The Society for Collegiate Journalists is a national honor society whose purpose is to

  • improve the quality of student media at the college level,
  • teach the ethics, techniques and mechanics of such media and encourage student participation,
  • and promote the understanding of and the support of freedom of student expression, including freedom of speech and press for all college students.

The NCSU chapter is an honorary, service-oriented organization that promotes journalism on campus and strives to create an environment that will encourage an exchange of ideas among members of the campus community.

The chapter sponsors various activities to increase campus awareness of media-related issues, especially those centered around the First Amendment and the Freedom of Information Act.

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Minimum of two semesters in Student Media
  • Current, active member of NCSU Student Media

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Submit a 500-word essay on the role of journalism and the journalist on college campuses.
  • Submit Letter of recommendation from a peer and/or adviser. Letters of recommendation may come from current members of SCJ.
  • Present a brief statement at the SCJ meeting for application review, Q&A, that explains why he/she applied for membership and what qualifications, expertise he/she has that will serve SCJ well.

Applications are accepted at the end of both the fall and spring semesters.

TIMELINE

1996 • NCSU chapter formed; Fran Russ, adviser

2003 • New Student Media adviser Bradley Wilson reactivates charter that had lapsed; Jerry Moore, then editor of the Technician, was selected as the National Collegiate Journalist of the Year by SCJ.

2006 • Martha Collins takes over as chapter’s adviser.

2007 • NCSU SCJ hosts campus-wide panel discussion on war in Iraq: ""Permission to Speak Freely? Media Coverage of the War in Iraq" April 22 featuring guests Mohamed Ali, an Iraqi native; Jay Price, reporter for the Raleigh News & Observer; Major Jeff Robertson, N.C. State Army ROTC; Melanie Sill, editor of the Raleigh News & Observer; and moderator Anna Bigelow, NCSU professor of philosophy and religion.
