Jimmy and Rosalynn Cater Partnership Foundation provides grants and awards to recognize the best practices in campus-community partnerships and the best new ideas for student-led community service learning. Strategies include awards for the best campus-community partnership program, grants for innovative community service ideas of students and online connectivity for students, faculty, administrative staff and community organizations.

We received this grant with the help of Logan Aimone of the National Scholastic Press Association as a way to help promote service learning and photography all at once. By taking our knowledge and going out into our community to teach area high schools, we are, in a way, also a part of a service learning project. Our knowledge may be primarily self- taught but we are helping to get photography a little more recognition and to show students what service learning is all about.

Our goal was to do a training session on the basics of photography at area high schools with the photographers from the newspaper, yearbook and other photography classes. At the end of the training we explained to them what service learning was, gave them some examples and their task. Their task was to go into their community, or school and document a service learning project using the knowledge we passed along to them. Upon receiving the photos, we have made this site to show their hard work to the world. We appreciate everyone’s help in making this happen and being able to help train such promising photographers.

Our Goal

Our goal upon implementing this grant was to teach students about service learning and have them use that knowledge to document a service learning project taking place in their community. After training young photographers in the basics of photography and explaining what makes a good photo, we were then able to explain to them service learning and allow them to become more aware of it in their community.

Service Learning

Service-learning is a method of teaching which takes knowledge and skills learned in the classroom and applies them toward improving one’s community.

According to the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction, Service Learning combines community service with academic instruction. When designing a service learning component for a course, faculty must be careful to include:

  • A clear connection between the service and course competencies or objectives
  • A relevant experience with a carefully structured assignment which includes:
    • Clear objectives, specific directions, and evaluation criteria
    • Critical thinking and/or problem solving
    • Accountability (time card or signature verification)
    • Reflection in writing (journal, report, reaction paper, project, speech, ...)
    • Sharing and celebration
  • A meaningful contribution to the community
