Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 FAQ
With the official release of Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 on January 15, 2008, there have been many questions regarding its availability under the various Microsoft agreements at NC State. This FAQ will address the more commonly asked questions.
- When can I purchase Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac?
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac is now available for purchase from SHI. It became available on February 1, 2008. For further information about purchasing Office, please visit the Purchase Microsoft Office page.
- How much is Microsoft Office for Mac 2008?
Pricing remains the same under the Academic Select Contract from Office Mac 2004 (currently $40 per license) for the new Office Mac 2008!

Microsoft will no longer offer paper documentation (manual). All documentation is now available free online and in the product itself (under HELP).
- What is the cost to upgrade from Office Mac 2004 to Office Mac 2008 through the Academic Select Program?
Microsoft does not offer upgrade SKU ’s through the licensing program. You must purchase new licenses to obtain Office Mac 2008.
*Only licenses purchased with Software Assurance or through a Microsoft site license program (Campus Agreements) will be eligible to receive free upgrades.
- What if I still need to purchase Office Mac 2004 under the Academic Select Program (Office Mac 2004 licenses have been deleted from the price list starting February 1, 2008)?
Microsoft only publishes pricing for the current versions of products available, however all licenses include downgrade rights. This means that although you are purchasing an Office Mac 2008 license, you have the right to install any prior version. Also, if you purchase an Office Mac 2008 license and use your downgrade rights to install Office Mac 2004, you have the right to uninstall your downgraded copy and re-install Office Mac 2008 at no additional cost for the license.
Please note:
*Office Mac 2004 installation CD’s will continue to be available for purchase.
**You can not install both Office Mac 2004 and Office Mac 2008 on the same machine with only 1 license. You would need to purchase a license for each instance of Office Mac installed.
***You do not have the right to install Office Mac 2008 if you have only purchased a license for Office Mac 2004.
- My college is enrolled in the Microsoft Campus Agreement. Will I be entitled to the Office for Mac 2008 upgrade?
For those insitutions that have enrolled in a Campus Agreement with coverage for the Desktop Platform or Office – you will be entitled to an free upgrade to Office Mac 2008. - When will I receive the media kit for Office 2008?
Office Mac 2008 installation CD’s for institution use are now available for purchase and will also be shipped in your February kit update if you are currently receiving automatic media shipment’s for the Office Mac Family
- When will Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 be available under the Student Select Agreement so it can be sold in the campus book store?
Unfortunately, the manufacturer of the special installation CD’s for the Student Select is not expecting student media to be available for purchase until Spring 2008.
