What is a Tax ID Number and why do we need one?

A Tax ID Number or EIN is like a social security number for your organization. This is needed if you try to open a bank account for your organization. Its purpose is so the IRS will not make you personally responsible for taxes on revenue that you have earned. A Tax ID number is not required to register a student organization.

How do we get a Tax ID Number?

You may contact the IRS at 1-800-829-3676 and request a Form SS-4 (Application for Employer Identification Number) or visit their website.

Why do we have to re-register our organization each year?

The Student Organization Resource Center needs to have current information to provide to new and existing students about your organization. We need to have current officers and any changes to your constitution.

Why do you want a new copy of our constitution when we make changes to it?

It is better to have too many copies than none. The SORC needs to make sure that your organization adheres to university policy. Also, if your organization were to become inactive for a period of time, a student could come to the SORC to obtain a copy of the constitution in order to reactivate the organization.

We can't find a copy of our constitution. What do we do?

This is exactly why the SORC likes to have a copy of the constitution. We can provide a copy of the constitution to you if you can't find a copy. If there is not a copy of the constitution in the SORC, then we suggest you contact former members or advisors to see if they might have copies.

Why do we have to supply our Student ID Numbers on the registration form?

The Student ID Number is used to verify that all executive board members are registered students in good standing with NC State University.

Why can't we use "NC State" or "NCSU" as part of our name?

Registered student organizations are private, voluntary associations with no formal relationship to NC State University. The university has a licensing program that you would need to contact to use the logo or any form of the name.
