When preparing a proposal budget for an externally sponsored project, the University uses the most conservative method of estimating graduate student tuition costs that still provides adequate support for the research project. Since most Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) are not hired until after the project is awarded, the residency of the student to be recruited is unknown. The GTO allows the University to budget the in-state student tuition rate, plus $1,500 per GRA per semester under the GTO. The GTO is a method whereby the University and the Sponsor share the additional cost of tuition if a non-resident GRA is hired. Without the GTO, the University would have to estimate tuition costs at the full out-of-state rate (approximately $8,703 per semester**). Under the GTO, if an out-of-state student is hired, the Sponsor only pays the in-state tuition (approximately $2,679 per semester** plus $1,500 per semester GTO contribution) and the University pays the remainder of the out-of-state tuition rate (approximately $4,524 per semester**).
