PI Responsibility for All Subordinate Activity
Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society states that a fundamental basis for integrity in science is proper record keeping. Furthermore, in the publications "Honor in Science" and "The Responsible Research: Path and Pitfalls" both by Sigma Xi, the society confirms that the responsibility for ALL CONDUCT IN THE LAB is that of the SENIOR SCIENTIST OVER THE LAB. That means if one of your graduate students commits scientific misconduct, then it is partly the fault of the advisor by failing to teach the proper conduct and ethical constructs of being a scientist. One can not escape this fundamental principal; the obligations of mentoring are ever present, the responsibilities are enormous and the need is universal.
Sincerely,
Matthew Ronning
Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Administration

All professional societies highlight either directly or indirectly the obligation of the investigator in mentoring and managing research programs. Below is a sample from the American Society for BioChemistry and Moleculary Biology regarding an investigator's responsibility as a mentor and represents a theme that is found universally in professional settings.

In fulfilling OBLIGATIONS TO TRAINEES, it is EXPECTED that:
- investigators serving as mentors will provide training and experience to advance the trainees' scientific skills and knowledge of ethical research practices;
- investigators will provide appropriate help in advancing the careers of the trainees;
- investigators will recognize research contributions of the trainees appropriately;
- investigators will encourage and support the publication of results of trainees' research in a timely fashion without undisclosed limitations;
- and investigators will create and maintain a working environment that encourages cultural diversity.
