Internal preproposal specifications

Title page: Provide a title page with the name of the sponsor, the name of the program, and the name, title, email address and telephone number of the principal investigator. Provide the same information for the NC State co-principal investigators. List investigators from any external collaborating partners. Include a heading, "Type of proposal," and identify the proposal as either 1B or 1C, according to the definitions on page 6 of the program solicitation. The type of proposal must be 1B or 1C because NC State has been the lead institution on a previous award under this program. Include the name, title, telephone number and email address of the college research administrator (rather than the Associate Dean for Research) in the principal investigator's home college. To identify the college research administrator, contact the Proposal Development Unit.

Project summary: Summarize the expected increases in students obtaining STEM baccalaureate degrees (or, as applicable, increases in students obtaining associate degrees or credits at a community college who transfer to baccalaurate programs) over the five-year grant period. Explain the reasons why working toward an increase in the number of STEM graduates is compatible with the University's mission, as well as the University's vision underlying plans to increase the number of STEM graduates. Include descriptive summaries of any prior efforts to increase interest in STEM careers, and the results of those efforts. Provide examples of specific strategies to be used, and rationales for using them. If a subset of STEM fields is involved, explain why project activities would not be expected to cause decreases of enrollment in other STEM fields. Type 1B proposals must also include data supporting claims of success of previous activities and describe how the previous project has been institutionalized and serves as a foundation for the proposed project. Type 1B summaries should also describe significantly new directions and the rationales for choosing them. Aslo include a clear statement of which proposed activities, if successful, would be expected to be institutionalized by the end of the grant period, and which successful activities would require further sources of support to be continued. A Type 1C project summary should provide significant information about the accomplishments to date under the original project, including a summary of evaluation results for four years. For a Type 1C project summary, an additional page is allowed for this information. The Type 1B summary may be up to four single-spaced pages in 12-point type within an 8.5 x 11 format. The Type 1C summary may included a fifth page for reporting evaluation results for four years.

Curriculum vitae: Include an NSF Biosketch or equivalent for the NC State University principal investigator and co-principal investigators, and for any lead investigators at the collaborating organizations.

Submitting the internal preproposal for review: The principal investigator must submit the internal preproposal first to the college research administrator. The college research administrator will review the internal preproposal for compliance with the internal specifications described above. The principal investigator should submit the internal preproposal far enough in advance of the deadline to allow correction of any compliance errors discovered by the college research administrator. When the college research administrator finds the internal preproposal in compliance, he or she will forward it for internal review to the Proposal Development Unit, which sends it on to the review panel. Preproposals must be received by or before the internal preproposal deadline.
