Post Response URC_STAG NOATTENDNCURASRA BET_2_AND_5 FOCUS_PI BALANCED BALANCED LIKE_REMOT The dialogue was excellent about developing a focus group of faculty (working with administration) to figure out key issues that deter the growth or development of the research enterprise, and inhibit faculty participation in research. Actually, I think addressing key issues can be done in the URC by brainstorming all conceivable issues affecting faculty from various colleges, choosing and prioritizing, issues that can give the most impact once resolved, then systematically tackling those problematic issues through targeted information gathering, etc.. Ray Fornes Post Response RSC ATTENDEDNCURASRA BET_2_AND_5 FOCUS_POST BALANCED BALANCED LIKE_LOCAL I felt some of the questions were N/A as I felt the content material presented was not focused to either pre or post award but to the research enterprise as a whole. As an administrator I found the discussions that pertained to vision, mission and goals very interesting. I thought David Bird's and Dr. Rajala's presentations were excellent and thought provoking. As an add on comment....I know that the RSC Group is mainly devoted to administrative and support functions...but there are some folks involved that love research, are engaged and intelligent. I would hope that at some point both the ROC and the URC would know that they can tap into a talented pool of individuals who do care about the vision and where "there" is. The beach location was AWESOME....the reason my responce state local is that we can allow more folks to attend. I would also like to suggest that the Post Award folks have a retreat to discuss administrative issues, etc. Post Response RSC ATTENDEDNCURASRA BET_2_AND_5 FOCUS_PRE BALANCED BALANCED LIKE_REMOT Post Response RSC NOATTENDNCURASRA MORE_THAN_5 FOCUS_PRE BALANCED BALANCED LIKE_REMOT Wrightsville Beach Holiday Inn Sunspree HI Sunspree was an excellent facility. Post Response ROC NOATTENDNCURASRA MORE_THAN_5 FOCUS_PRE BALANCED BALANCED LIKE_REMOT Overall the retreat was very good! Thank you for the opportunity to attend: My suggestions for future retreats are (1) a session(s) with relative topics for the 'support staff', -such as suggestions for improving operating procedures, assisting the PI's, staff needs; (2)well ness session-taking better care of ourselves-makes better employees, handling & preventing on-the-job stress, importance of exexcise, etc. Post Response RSC ATTENDEDNCURASRA MORE_THAN_5 FOCUS_MIX BALANCED BALANCED LIKE_REMOT This year’s retreat had a lot of good information and interaction from members of each group. One thing I would like to see is us to look at some means of really targeting those that need training. As the research enterprise continues to grow and the administration continues to ignore the need to expand the support in the departments, units, and colleges we are going to have to really get the training to the bookkeepers and admin personnel. The current workloads in some departments and colleges don't allow for personnel to get out and get the training they need and a lot is left up to the college reps that attend the training or meetings to disseminate the information. How do we get the information to those that really need it? Overall the retreat was very good and informative, but we still have work to do. Post Response RSC ATTENDEDNCURASRA MORE_THAN_5 FOCUS_MIX BALANCED BALANCED LIKE_REMOT Liked the open discussion format this year but the Retreat is missing out on a GREAT opportunity for small breakout groups to brainstorm and share....not only would the interaction with others from all the various groups attending be beneficial but it would provide the opportunity for more people to openly share their ideas! Post Response RSC ATTENDEDNCURASRA MORE_THAN_5 FOCUS_MIX TOO_MUCH_POLICY LIKE_REMOT I thought the site was the best of the 5 I have been to. Not just the location, but the facility itself. Meeting rooms were a good size, with enough room at tables not to be crowded. Rooms for dining were also a good size and the food was good also. Post Response NOTMEMBER ATTENDEDNCURASRA LESS_THAN_2 FOCUS_PRE BALANCED BALANCED LIKE_REMOT Hoped to see more interactive discussion among research deans, instead of the panel discussion. I thought David and Sarah did a fine job in putting forth thoughts for consideration. But we really didn't come away with a sense of direction, engagement of deans/faculty, leadership from the VC to achieve the goals. A commitment to work in and among colleges to create "dream teams" for center proposals was not evident, but it critical to successful submissions. The reception on Wed evening was very nice and provided opportunity to engage in a different environ. A little more food would have been nice as we ran out well before 8 pm. Post Response RSC ATTENDEDNCURASRA MORE_THAN_5 FOCUS_MIX TOO_MUCH_PROGRAM TOO_MUCH_PRE LIKE_REMOT Location: EXCELLENT DO IT AGAIN Focus Mix: Not so much that it was too much pre-award, as not enough post-award. Many issues to address post-award that would be good for Contracts office to highlight: audits, effort, faculty education (!!!), changing federal requirements.. NSF Survey: Colleges are anxious to complete correctly. Lack of instructions or vagueness in instruction leaves too much up to colleges to decide, many opportunities for inconsistency and diviation. This would be a good place for C&G to provide leadership. Overall, very good retreat. This is a good opportunity for research staff to network. Appreciate the free evenings in which to talk and discuss. (Not possible at in-town retreat--Murphy Ctr very nice but does not provide the same opportunities at overnight). I thought this year's venue was excellent in terms of the facility and the location. The advantage of a retreat off-campus is that it forces participants to step back. One possibility: alternate years (local, away). One suggestion: include a list of pre-registered participants and their affiliations. Post Response RSC ATTENDEDNCURASRA MORE_THAN_5 FOCUS_MIX BALANCED BALANCED LIKE_REMOT NSF Expenditure Survey issue-seem to me that it would be in the best interest of the University to write a detailed description of the criteria for research expenditures. Meaning that if a particular account does not meet this criteria then it cannot be submitted. Consistency through-out the University colleges would be great! I especially feel this reponsibility should lie with the Office of Contracts & Grants! Why don't C&G know what criteria NSF is looking for and why is it not being conveyed across campus effectively. Is this report a joke! Apparently to NSF it is. But NCSU is the one looking bad, because our University units are not on the same page with the reporting criteria. Also; consistantly throughout the meetings, the need for additional support staff was overlooked. But it was most definitely stated that faculty workload was increasing with additonal credit hours to teach, along with research requirements. BUT! who is really teaching and who is really doing research? Only problem I see in the operation of C&G's fiscal manager is that their is no consistency! This seem to be a major issue throughout the University! But all the powers to be are overlooking this fact! I would say this is one of the major reason that we are falling in ranking and will continue to do so! Far and away the best presentations I've seen in a decade or so of retreats were those by Sarah Rajala and David Bird. Both are unbelievably tallented speakers and the content was carefully thought out, to the point, right mix of detail, and appeared to cut across the divide of knowledge between support staff and the leaders in the room.
