Staff Senate Chair Report
November 21, 2002

The Staff Senate has had a productive 1st quarter. We have heard from a number of speakers from campus including Dr. Thomas Conway who spoke on the Campus Climate Survey, Claire Kane who spoke on the Campus Transit System, and Chancellor Fox who gave her annual address to the senate. During this time we have also made staff appointments to the Campus Climate Committee and to the Diversity Advisory Committee. We have also been able to obtain senators to represent CHASS and Education, two districts that had previously been without senate representation. Other improvements for the staff include a preliminary agreement with the Hillsborough Street Textbook shop to offer a 10% discount on all non-textbook purchases to staff members upon presenting their ID. Chair-elect John Barnwell did the groundwork for this project and will work with Wolfperks to complete the agreement.

Senate committees have made progress in the goals for this year. The Governance Committee has made great strides in their goal to update the bylaws and to document the day-to-day policies and procedures of the senate paying particular attention to elections and attendance. They hope to have a set of working papers for the Senate by the end of the year. The Publication Relations committee upon receiving a working budget for the year is well underway to publishing our first issue of The Voice. The Resources and Environment Committee is working with other campus groups to keep campus informed of changes resulting from the bond construction. To that end our November meeting will have as our featured speaker Charles Leffler, Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities, who will give a presentation on the bond construction projects. The Senate will hold this meeting in the Witherspoon Cinema and has invited interested staff and students to attend. It is our hope that not only will this give staff members a chance to hear about the bond projects but will also provide an opportunity for them to witness first hand their Senate in action. In doing so we hope to lay the groundwork for better participation in both nominations and elections in the spring and to encourage staff members to interact with their senators.
