Staff Senate Accomplishments 2003 - 2004

NC State Staff Senate -> Accomplishments

We have diligently strived to reach the goals we have set out to accomplish during this term.

We have presented our budget resolution along with those of seven other UNC System schools to Rep Deborah Ross of district 39. She provided some great feedback on the status of salary and benefits for state employees. We are working with the Office of External Affairs to meet with other Senators and Representatives to continue building a positive relationship with the North Carolina General Assembly to assist the UNC System, NC State, and its employees.

We have designed a computer loan program for university employees. This program is intended to provide computer equipment for employees taking IT based classes and cannot afford one of their own. This program is aimed at assisting employees to enhance upward mobility with in the university. Over 20 computers have been provided to get the program started. Procedures and guidelines have been established and are under review by administration. Over 40 applicants have applied for acceptance. We are working with the university to provide some free user workshops for those in this program.

Our crime stoppers program is online and operational at this time. We have been approved by the IRS for non-profit tax status. This approval allows us to register with the NC Secretary of State’s Office. We will come under review again in 2007. This program was implemented to address the unique types of crime that occur in a university setting. Most crimes in our community do not meet the standards of a municipal crime stoppers program. By having our own crime stoppers, we can include lesser crimes such as theft and damage to property.

The Staff Senate has worked with the other UNC System schools to enhance communication and idea sharing between the institutions staff governance. This is being done through an e-mail list serve, periodic meetings, video teleconferencing. By keeping in touch and sharing ideas, we can work as a team to make all of our institutions a better place for SPA employees.

Our Human Resources committee is currently looking into the feasibility of a book loan program for employees wishing to take classes at NC State. ECU currently has this program, but their vending services underwrite the cost. Our bookstore is happy to work with us on this provided we find some way to fund it.

This year we were able to address some internal issues regarding our governing by-laws. The by-laws are being amended to include working papers for each committee and position. These working papers provide information on how the committees and positions function that is more detailed than the standard description in the by-laws. This should allow newly elected officers to have an idea of where meetings are held and how they are run.
