Intramural Sports Frequently Asked Questions

Purpose of the FAQ

  1. To serve as a beginner’s guide to participating in Intramural Sports programming
  2. To serve as a quick-reference for some of the most common issues that occur during the course of an Intramural Sports program.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive resource of information on Intramural Sports policies; team captains and other participants are encouraged to review the Intramural Sports handbook for complete details on Intramural Sports policies and procedures.

1. What is Intramural Sports?
Intramural Sports at NC State is composed of team sports, individual/dual sports, and special events that are designed to provide organized recreational participation. Competitive Intramural Sports programs are intracollegiate, i.e., all participants are affiliated with NC State (in contrast with the Club Sports program, in which some clubs are competitive intercollegiately).
2. What leagues of play are offered?
Currently, the Intramural Sports program offers four men’s leagues (Men'a A, Men'a B, Elite, and Fraternity), two women’s leagues (Women’s open and Sorority, two co-recreational league (Co-rec A and Co-rec B; equal numbers of each gender on the same team), and a graduate student/faculty/staff league (Grad/fac/staff; no restrictions on the gender of participants).
3. How many teams can I play on?
With the exception of the co-rec and elite leagues, players may only participate on one team in team sports programs, and may participate in one singles league and on one doubles team in individual/dual sports tournaments. For example, if a male student in a fraternity plays on a men’s open team, he would be ineligible to participate on his fraternity team.
4. What if I want to switch teams?
Any player can switch teams up until the first time that he or she is added to the roster of one team. Once a player has been added to a team, he or she may not change teams.
5. How do I register a team?
The easiest, and most common way of forming a team is to get a group of friends together that all want to play, with one person in that group agreeing to take on the role of team captain. The team captain would then register the team using the online registration forms located on the Intramural Sports home page during each registration period. Greek organizations typically elect an athletic director that serves as captain for all of the organizations teams. Note: During the initial registration period, it is not necessary to put together complete team rosters. Only the captain’s information is required to register the team.
6. What if I don’t have anyone to play with?
The Intramural Sports program does not currently place individuals that don’t have a team on any teams. A free agent registration is provided for those that don’t have a team. Remember that teams can add players to their roster up until the end of the regular season; many players have been picked up by teams simply by going out to the fields or courts and asking around.
7. How do I sign up to play in an individual/dual sports tournament?
Just like for team sports, registration is completed online utilizing registration forms located on the Intramural Sports home page. Unlike team sports, however, individuals and duals teams register themselves, rather than having a single team captain register for a team. Please note, however, that many Greek organization AD’s take on the responsibility of registering players to represent their organizations in individual/dual sports.
8. Where are schedules posted?
All schedules are posted online. These schedules can be accessed using the links on the right side of the Intramural Sports home page.
9. Where are games played?
Most outdoor team sports are played on the Miller Fields, behind Carmichael Gymnasium. Most indoor team sports are played on basketball courts 3-8, located in Carmichael Gym.
10. It’s the day of my game, but we’re playing outdoors and it’s raining where I live. Are the games still on?
Never assume that games are cancelled due to inclement weather.  Information about the status of Miller Fields can be obtained from the Miller Fields Information Line at 919.513.0071. The line is updated daily Monday-Friday at 3:00 pm, and Sunday at 1:00 pm. Please listen to the time stamp on the voice message carefully, to determine if the information on the line is current. If Miller Fields are closed as of the 3:00 pm (or 1:00 pm Sunday) update, outdoor activities for that evening are canceled.
11. Games are on and it’s game day! What should I do?
First, one representative of your team should head to the Equipment Room (located on the first floor of Carmichael Gym) to check-out the necessary equipment.  Once you have your equipment, you should report to your game site at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled game time. All players must present their NC State ID cards to the scorekeeper on their field in order to play. If you’re not sure which field you play on, seek out the Intramural Sports student supervisor on duty at each game site to find out.
12. The season has already started, but I have someone that wants to join my team. Are they still allowed?
Players may be added to teams at any time during the season. There are several ways to add a player to your team:

  • Online: As the team captain, you can access the online registration system used to input your roster prior to the beginning of the season to make changes to your roster. Players added by 3:00 pm each day will show up on that night’s roster.
  • In person in the University Recreation office: Players can come to the University Recreation office with their NC State ID card anytime before 3:00 pm to get added to a roster.
  • In person at the game site: Each team can make up unlimited roster additions at the game site. Players must be present to be added to the roster at the site.

13. What is the difference between the A and B leagues?

The A league is fairly organized and skilled, with less experience or talent than the Elite league.  The B league is for those who desire a less competitive level of competition than the a League.  Team players' abilities range from a beginner to an intermediate skill level.

14.  What is a Playoff Draw Meeting?

At the conclusion of most team sport's regular season, a playoff draw meeting will be held. At this meeting, the teams that qualified for the playoffs will be able to select their place in the tournament bracket.  All eligible teams will be seeded based on record and the tie-break procedures will be used when needed.  The best seeded teams will have their choice first as to where they will be placed in the bracket.

15.  Are the Playoff Draw Meetings mandatory?

The Playoff Draw Meetings are not mandatory.  However, if no representative from a team is present, that team will be placed into the tournament bracket after all teams with a representative present have selected their place.
