Registration
- Register for all trips at Outdoor Adventures (1st floor Carmichael Complex) in the Carmichael Recreation Center Monday-Friday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. Our trips are popular and often fill the first day of registration. We recommend you arrive early on registration day
Payment
- Payment is due at the time of registration
- For trips priced under $55 full payment is due at the time of registration
- For trips priced over $55, a deposit is required at the time of registration and the balance is due prior to the pre-trip meeting
- Cash or Check only (Make checks out to NCSU)
Policies
- Current student with a valid gym membership can register for trips. Friends or students from other universities are not allowed
- Participants must travel in Outdoor Adventures’ vehicles. Driving separately, meeting the group or being picked up is not allowed
- Outdoor Adventures trips are university related functions and should be treated as such. Alcohol, tobacco, and drug use are prohibited for the duration of the trip. Participants who violate these rules are subject to removal from the trip and transportation back to NCSU will be at the participant’s expense.
Pre-Trip/Post Registration
- When you register for your trip, you will be required to complete and sign a Trip Registration Form. It provides us additional information about you as well as covering many of our policies
- You will receive a packet containing the following:
- medical form
- pre-trip packet
- packing list
- Please bring these to the pre-trip meeting
- You will receive an email reminder about the pre-trip meeting (check both your inbox and your junk mail folder for the email, the subject line will include Outdoor Adventures and the name of the trip)
- Pre-Trip meetings are mandatory and vitally important components of all our trips. They last approximately one hour and allow the staff and participants meet one another, discuss trip details, necessary equipment/gear, highlight safety issues, and complete medical forms.
- If you are unable to attend a pre-trip meeting because of academic commitments (legitimate excuse), you are responsible for scheduling a time with the trip staff to meet with you to review the necessary information
- Fitness Assessment
In order to participate in certain trips with Outdoor Adventures, a fitness assessment is required at the pre-trip meeting. This assessment is intended to enhance the safety and enjoyment of all participants involved. Fitness assessments by activity are as follows:
Backpacking:
To successfully complete this assessment a 1.5 mile distance must be covered in no more than 15 minutes by walking/running.
Flat Water:
To successfully complete this assessment, participants must be able to swim 4 lengths of the pool continuously with no time limit using any stroke(s) of choice. In addition to this, participants must tread water for 2 minutes.
Open Water/Whitewater:
To successfully complete this assessment, participants must be able to swim 4 lengths of the pool continuously with no time limit using any stroke(s) of choice. In addition to this, participants must tread water for 5 minutes.
*Please note that failure to complete a required fitness assessment disqualifies participants for participation in that particular trip and will NOT result in the refund of trip fees.
Cancellations and Refunds
- In the event that Outdoor Adventures cancels a trip all money collected will be refunded. Trip cancellations are rare, but may occur due safety issues (extreme weather conditions).
- No other refunds will be provided. Partial refunds may be provided considering written and verifiable proof of inability to attend (ex: doctor’s note). Documentation must be provided 5 working days prior to the trips departure, otherwise no refunds will be given regardless of reason.

Become a Trip Leader:
Interested in becoming an Outdoor Adventures Trip Leader and Outdoor Educator? Outdoor Adventures hires Trip Leaders at the end of each Spring semester. New hires are required to attend an 8-Day Trip Leader Training Trip where they will learn many of the essential skills and policies and procedures for leading outdoor adventure trips through Outdoor Adventures! This trip does not cost anything for new trip staff but it is an unpaid training. Outdoor Adventures recommends signing up for a trip or two throughout the year to experience one of our outings as a participant prior to the hiring process.
Trip Details
Beech Mountain Day Ski Trip
What: Ski and Snowboard Trip

Includes: Transportation, lunch at the resort, ski or snowboard rental (depending on registration type), and All Day Lift Ticket. (road meals and snacks are not included)
Tentative Itinerary:
- Friday- Meet at Carmichael Recreation Center at 4:30am
- Drive to Beech Mountain Resort. Arrive about 9:00am
- Distribute lift tickets and get outfitted with rental equipment
- Enjoy the mountain by skiing and snowboarding all day!
- Eat lunch anytime you want in the Beech Mountain Cafeteria
- Return all rental equipment and meet at designated location by 4:30pm
- Begin drive back to NC State. Arrive back around 9:00pm
Join Outdoor Adventures as we hit the slopes at one of North Carolina’s best Ski and Snowboard Resorts! This all inclusive day trip will get you to the slopes with all of the equipment you need and lunch! Not sure how to ski or snowboard? Well you can sign up for ski and/or snowboard lessons at Beech (additional cost paid at the ski resort). There are two separate trips so sign up for one or sign up for both!
Hanging Rock Day Hike

Tentative Itinerary:
- Leave from Carmichael Recreation Center at 7 am on Saturday
- Arrive at Hanging Rock State Park around 9:30am
- Hike and explore Hanging Rock, eating lunch around 1pm
- We’ll leave for Raleigh around 5:00pm
- Arrive back on campus around 7:30pm
- Allow about ½ hour to unload vans and clean equipment
After a short drive, spend the day hiking at Hanging Rock State Park in Danbury, North Carolina. Enjoy views of the piedmont plateau and Appalachian foothills stretching for miles. Be sure to bring your cameras to capture the shear cliffs, forests, and waterfalls that dominate the landscape! No experience is necessary. All instruction and equipment will be provided.
Raven Rock State Park Day Hike

- Leave at 6am on Sunday
- Arrive at Raven Rock State Park approximately 8:45am
- Hike and explore the park
- Lunch at picnic area
- Hike and explore more of the park
- Depart Raven Rock around 4pm
- Arrive back at NC State approximately 6:45pm
- Allow about 15 minutes to unload vans and clean equipment
Raven Rock State Park is located just over an hour outside of Raleigh along the Cape Fear River. This beautiful park is full of hiking trails and scenic views as you travel through hardwood forest on your way to Raven Rock, the parks centerpiece. Join OA and discover this beautiful park! No experience is necessary. All instruction and equipment will be provided.
Spring Break Okefenokee/ Suwanee River Canoeing
What: Canoeing and camping in Southern Georgia and Northern Florida

Where: Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, GA and the Suwanee River, FL

Tentative Itinerary:
- Meet at Carmichael Recreation Complex no later than 12 noon and begin drive to Fargo, GA and set up camp
- Wake up Saturday morning and enjoy a day paddle in the Okefenokee Swamp camp near the swamp
- Wake up Sunday morning and begin paddle in the Okefenokee to the Suwannee River sill and camp along the river
- Monday-Thursday continue paddling down the Suwannee River, paddling between 15-20 miles per day and camping on sandbars
- Wake up Friday and paddle 4-6 miles to the take out and enjoy the small, historic town of White Springs, FL. Head back to NCSU early evening.
Join Outdoor Adventures for a truly memorable Spring Break experience! This year we will be heading to the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia. Okefenokee means “land of trembling earth,” in the language of the now extinct Hitchiti tribe. Under canopies of ancient cypress trees adorned with Spanish moss, we will canoe through the black waters of the massive Okefenokee Swamp which conceals Alligators, Otters, and Beavers along with a vast Array of other unique wildlife. From the Okefenokee, we will emerge into the famous Suwannee River which flows out of the swamp and 240 miles south into the Gulf of Mexico. We will continue 80 miles south along the fast-flowing Suwannee, camping on the rivers famous white-sand beaches each night. Our journey will take us across the state line and into Florida where we will observe 19th century cotton plantations as well as breathtaking sunsets! We will conclude our river trip with a one-night stopover in White Springs, Florida, which is known for its beautiful antebellum mansions and quaint oak-lined streets. Join us on this epic trip, you won’t regret it! No experience is necessary. All instruction and equipment will be provided.

To successfully complete this assessment, 4 lengths of the pool must be swam continuously using the stroke(s) of your choice. In addition, you will need to tread water for 2 minutes. Spring Break Backpacking Chattahoochee National Forest
What: Backpacking through the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia

Tentative Itinerary:
- Meet at Outdoor Adventures Saturday, March 3rd at 9am and begin drive to Chattahoochee National Forest.
- Arrive and set up camp around 3pm. Enjoy the evening and prep for our backpacking adventure!
- Begin backpacking from the trailhead on Sunday morning. Hike all day along the Chattahoochee River and set up camp.
- Monday – Thursday continue backpacking on the Bartram Trail camping and sightseeing along the way. We will be hiking between 6-10 miles each day.
- Pack up and begin the drive back to NCSU Friday morning.
- Arrive back to Raleigh around 4pm. Allow for 1 hour to clean and organize gear.
Looking for something exciting to do over spring break? Join Outdoor Adventures as we backpack in the Chattahoochee National Forest along the Bartram Trail! This amazing adventure will take us through the northern part of Georgia as we hike along the beautiful Chattooga River. Throughout this extended backpacking trip participants will learn many of the essential backpacking skills like backcountry cooking, camp set up, backcountry navigation, and much more! Sign up quickly because there are limited spots available! No experience is necessary. All instruction and equipment will be provided.

Cape Fear River Paddle

Tentative Itinerary:
- Meet at Carmichael Recreation Complex at 8:00am on Saturday and begin drive to put in
- Canoe all day, stopping for lunch and snacks along the way. The group will camp in Raven Rock State Park
- Wake up Sunday morning around 8:00am, pack up and load all equipment into the canoes and continue paddling down the Cape Fear River to the take out spot
- Arrive back at NCSU around 5:00pm. Allow ½ for clean up and organization
Join Outdoor Adventures as we load up our canoes and spend the weekend paddling and camping along the beautiful Cape Fear River! This journey will take us through Raven Rock State Park for a fun night of camping! Experience the joys and skill of canoeing down this fun and exciting river! No experience is necessary. All instruction and equipment will be provided.

Pilot Mountain Rock Climbing and Camping

Tentative Itinerary:
- Meet at Carmichael Recreation Center at 1:00pm. Leave for Pilot Mountain State Park.
- Arrive at Pilot Mountain State Park around 3:30pm. Set up camp and hike around “The Knob” (depending on time).
- Friday night will be full of food, camping, and snacks around a campfire.
- Wake up early Saturday morning to pack up camp and begin climbing.
- Climb from 10am-4pm.
- Begin drive back to NCSU around 4:30pm.
- Arrive on campus about 7pm. Allow about 30 minutes to clean and organize gear.
Pilot Mountain is one of North Carolina’s most distinctive mountains. It is most widely known for its big pinnacle aka “The Knob” which rises up 2,421 feet. Pilot Mountain is remnant of the Sauratown mountain range, and has a wide range of climbing routes to choose from. Climbing on our trip will range from beginner to intermediate climbs. We will set up top-ropes for a full day of rock climbing. No experience is necessary. All instruction and equipment will be provided.
Mt. Rogers Backpacking (April Break)

Tentative Itinerary:
- Meet at Carmichael Recreation Complex at 9:00am on Thursday and head out to Mt. Rogers, VA stopping for lunch along the way (on your own).
- Arrive at Grayson Highlands State Park and head out on the Appalachian Trail!
- Wake up Friday and continue backpacking along into Rogers National Recreation Area and Lewis Fork Wilderness
- Wake up Saturday and continue backpacking enjoying the beautiful views along the way
- Sunday the group will wake up and finish the trek back to the vehicles and head back to NCSU around 1:00pm
- Arrive back at NCSU around 6:00pm. Leave ½ hour for gear cleaning and organization
Join Outdoor Adventures as we head off to one of the most beautiful areas of southern Virginia. Mount Rogers is the highest point in Virginia and offers exquisite beauty with 360-degree panoramic views, diverse wildlife, and a wonderful opportunity to see Mother Nature. No experience is necessary. All instruction and equipment will be provided.

Rumbling Bald Camping & Bouldering

- Meet at Carmichael Recreation Complex at 11:00am on Friday
- Leave Outdoor Adventures by 11:30am and head to Asheville, NC
- Arrive at the campground and set up camp around 4:00pm
- Camp, hangout and enjoy a food and a fire for the evening
- Wake up early Saturday morning and head to Rumbling Bald Mountain to hike and boulder all day
- Return to Campground around 5:00pm to eat and relax
- Wake up early Sunday morning and head back to Rumbling Bald Mountain to continue to hike and boulder until 1:00pm to eat lunch and head back to NCSU
- Arrive at NCSU around 5:00pm. Allow for ½ hour for gear clean up and organization
Join Outdoor Adventures as we head to Rumbling Bald Mountain near Asheville, North Carolina for a fun weekend of hiking, camping, and BOULDERING! What is bouldering? According to Webster’s Dictionary, Bouldering is rock climbing on large boulders or small outcrops either as practice or as a sport in its own right. Basically, bouldering is rock climbing but with less height and no ropes! Come try a new thing in a gorgeous area! We will also spend some time hiking around and enjoying the beautiful area! No experience is necessary. All instruction and equipment will be provided.
