NC State Counseling Center
Practicum and Internship Opportunities
The Counseling Center at NC State offers Practicum and Internship Opportunities for Graduate Students in Counselor Education, Counseling, and Psychology. We prefer individuals are able to make the commitment to do a full academic year of training (August-May). Summer-only (May-August) Internships are rarely granted, however you may inquire to see if this option is a possibility. This is an unpaid opportunity but training and supervision are provided.
Our Practicum and Internship program accepts talented students from differing programs (i.e., Counseling, Psychology, Social Work) and allows all students to work with senior staff from varying disciplines. Dr. Richard Tyler and Dr. Lari Jackson co-Coordinate the Training Program, working with Dr. Lee Salter, our Director, and other senior staff members who volunteer to participate in training and supervision. Many college counseling centers operate within a multi-disciplinary framework, and our training program is no exception. We expect a cooperative spirit and enthusiasm to learn from a variety of colleagues (peers, supervisors, senior staff, psychiatrists, and our office staff).
Practicum:
Typically entering in the Fall Semester, Practicum Students focus on integrating their emerging skills into practice. Practicum Students tend to commit 10 - 15 hours a week and are supervised by senior staff. Follow the Link to read more about the practicum.
Internship:
Typically entering in the Spring Semester, Interns will carry a full caseload offering them a diverse clinical experience. Interns tend to work between 35 - 40 hours a week and are supervised by senior staff. Follow the Link to read more about the Internship Program.
Application Process:
The number of Practicum students and/or Interns selected each year depends on a variety of factors, including office space availability, availability of supervisors, and the number of qualified applicants. We typically have more students interested in training here than we have space available, and obtaining a placement may be competitive.
Follow the Link to read more about the Application Process.
In order to receive full consideration we ask that you submit your application no later than March 31st for the following academic year.
We appreciate your interest in our training program and look forward to receiving your application.
