Personal Counseling

Counseling, most simply stated, is an interaction between a person who is "stuck" in some way and in need of help, and another person who is trained in helping people get "unstuck." The Counseling Center provides a safe place to talk with a professional about concerns or problems, no matter how minor or serious, which might interfere with personal growth and academic achievement. Students of every age and academic level come to the Counseling Center and receive help dealing with a broad range of concerns. Personal counseling is provided to individuals or couples to help students with a wide variety of problems including but not limited anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and substance abuse.

Academic Counseling

Many traditional and returning students experience academic difficulties of some kind during their college years. Students can meet individually with a counselor to discuss their academic difficulties and learn strategies to help them become better students. The academic counseling complements services provided by departmental advisors. Issues addressed might include semester withdrawal requests, alternative readmission evaluations, poor grades, test anxiety, learning disabilities, dissertation support, study skills, and others. In addition, our staff often offers workshops on a variety of academic topics.

Career Counseling

Are you struggling to identify your major? Are you wondering what career you want to pursue? NC State Counseling Center offers career counseling which can assist students during a career exploration. The career counseling compliments services available in the University Career Center. If you have career concerns or questions and would like to take one or more of the available career assessment instruments, please call or come by the Counseling Center to schedule an initial Career Assessment session.

Group Counseling

As part of our services to students, the Counseling Center provides group counseling throughout the academic year. Group therapy is often an effective way to experience growth and change in one's life. In groups, one can share common problems, safely interact with others, learn about onesself, and help others learn about themselves. We offer different types of groups each semester. Please read the descriptions of the group and let us know if you are interested in participating.

Urgent Care

Urgent Care Walk-in services are available from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm weekdays except 11:00 am – 4:00 pm on Wednesdays.

Emergency service is available continuously, 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. When the Counseling Center is closed, contact Public Safety at 515-3333. Inform the Switchboard that you would like to speak to the Counselor On-Call. The Counselor On-Call will call you back.
