The anti-bullying legislation (School Violence Prevention Act) in North Carolina has passed both the House and Senate and was signed into law by Governor Perdue.

The state of Massachusetts sued the U.S. government over a federal law (DOMA) that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

A gay marriage bill went into effect in the District of Columbia. Congress, which has final say over the city's laws, had 30 days to review the bill and took no action. DC will now recognize gay marriages performed in other states.

The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Act was signed into law by President Obama on Wednesday October 28, 2009 at 2:51pm.

November 2009

Austin City Manager Marc Ott notified the Austin City Council on Monday, November 2, 2009 that COBRA-like benefits will be made available to the same-sex domestic partners of City employees. This benefit will make available healthcare coverage to same-sex partners of City employees in case of the employee’s termination, divorce, or death. The City of Austin will be the first city in Texas to offer this benefit to its employees. The City of Austin has had domestic partner benefits since 2006.
